Question for Mods

I'm still a bit of a n00b to all this BF business but IMO the mods do a good job. Just a few questions, what is this RWO you refer to? Also I have noticed a number of posters under their profile/avatar have "Big Footy Addict" or "Big Footy Jedi" and what not. Are these based on how long people have been a member for or depending on the amount of posts etc...? How many different ranks are there possible?

Clearly you have self confessed you need help, you're spread too thin over responsibilites!. There are a lot of folks who can post in spare moments at work or during daytime. It does need someone with more proactive effect to boost it.

Here is my problem with this, you THINK I'm spread too thin, I'm not. I have enough time to check over the boards I mod on a daily basis and clean up any spotfires if they pop up. All I was pointing out was that both myself and Ert work and at work don't have the internet access that some people have at their work, plus we have other boards to look over, not just this one.

If that had been an issue before now, we either would of stood down, dropped mod duties from other boards or hell even requested another moderator. But both of us have never felt the need because we don't believe the tasks involved here have been that much of an issue to go down that path.

Fortunately for you both up till now not much volume happened.

The volume from when I first started and the volume now is a second moderator, a second board ten times the traffic and no longer holding the honor of being Big Footy's worst Club Board in terms of amounts of Posts. If you think nothing much has happened in my time as moderator (or Ert's for that matter) then you have no real idea of what has taken place on this board volume and traffic wise and most of the time I bearly have posted or had access to the internet at work.

However there are many who worked hard at boosting this place, some of them (NOT ME!) wanted to help more hands on fashion!

Hands-on in what way??? Myself and Ert posting more offen? Myself and Ert issuing Red Cards like they were going out of fashion? I'm sorry but no one has made a specific request as to how we "required" to be hands on other than to make make unreasonable requests that most Mods on Big Footy would be unable to meet.

I would have thought those things, and particularly any criticism, ought to be an absolute BF priority for you.

My number one priority is upholding the rules of Big Footy. My second priority is increasing the traffic of the boards that I moderate. On both fronts I can say I do a successful job. If pleasing Big Footy Members who post on the Boards that I Moderate then I would do a very very poor job because you CAN'T please everyone and you learn that very quickly as a Mod on Big Footy.

Not trying to be flaming smart arse (but was stupid about it ....to get some sort of response) and to highlight an issue that lingers in background for several.

I know you and others aren't trying to be smartarses, but questioning the job that myself and Ert do as Mods isn't going to help get issue resolved. We are looking to improve the board all the time (Hence the Club Roomie Sub Forum being introduced in the first place), but we can't make improvements at the request of members at a drop of a hat. We have channels we have to go though.

As put forward before we ARE in the process of a review as we speak and we are looking at changing Club Roomie from just a off topic player talk board, to a board where we can have the best bits of Club Roomie, add in POTY, Atopt a Swan to generate more traffic and discussion on the Sub Forum (that isn't Roomie related - but don't worry the Roomies will keep their Thread and we acknowledge their efforts in building up the Board so far).

We love the fact we have got a group of fans who are so willing to post about the Swans on a range of topics for the first time in this sites history. We acknowledge you guys and want to provide a service that is a good as possible. The fact we stand back and don't have to jump into threads is a good thing and hopefully it will continue.

We are here, we are looking forward and we do have the time to do the jump.

I didnt really want to comment on mods, but something that Nicky posted in another thread made alot of sense! Some complain that the mods on our board dont do enough, I agree with Nicky that this is a good thing, we dont want it to become like modern footy has, over officiated! Our mods join in on debate, not always carding etc like other boards!

p.s, my whole post loses credit, if Nicky got carded by our mods!...

I find it funny that some here say Bigfooty is over-moderated, and then they are demanding another moderator.

We rarely find problems on the Sydney board, and if there are, they are generally swiftly identified and removed.

We do not need another moderator on this board as it stands. If you want another moderator, or want to become one, get your Swan friends onto Bigfooty to make the Sydney board bigger and better. Until that happens, two moderators is plenty.

As for ERT and Robbie, the only reason I would want them posting more is because they are both very good contributors and can add a lot to Swans discussion on this board.

Having said that. If you don't realise that many like SouthSwans (sorry just one good example) really put a lot of time effort into boosting board and mainboard for that matter ever heard of it????

Also many others, I can remember making up a almost silly threads just because there wasn't anymore than 4 threads on the board here!

If you check I tried in an earlier thread to disuade him SS from suggesting on being a mod!!!

Many many many other boards have mods who are there ( whether just logged on or otherwise.. seemingly almost all day often all night!) I see their pro-active work and also see their boost to the threads. You know really clever stuff ie "great poster clever example" in most cases.. and regularly have post interchange with MANY of them.

WE ARE LUCKY! we have anyone (like you and ert) with the balls and committment to do a hard job!!!! for the pleasure of all. But if we are gunna match it with the rest and share the same fun... then all I was suggesting is it takes leadership from the front and many of us only know each other in cyberspace.

My world is not going to crumble if there is NO BF SWANs board... but very unlikely to go to an alt clique most self important troll hangout in "other" place! But I don't criticise the manyt who do!

IT is superior here IMO...... because Sydney fans in particular are exposed to the passionate other supported of othe clubs (especially interstate) and not just a select few cheerleader swans fans!

As per my suggestion earlier ( but that maybe a poor one) we need to be less precious about interclub discussion!!!!


Anyway.... whatever... believe me it is not to "pump up my own tyres" it is born ONLY by genuine utter passion for AFL footaball and the propering of SYDNEY SWANs fanship forever!!!!!!

I'm glad Robbie took the time to explain whats going on. The only problem I have ever had was that I felt many of the suggestions for improving the board were either being ignored or delayed for no good reason other than a lack of time on the mods behalf. Now that the situation has been explained a litter better and I understand that the Mods don't have the authority to just create and delete parts of this board at will I guess I can be a little more patient. Still sucks though

But seriously, this post is a good example of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. You see a way in which you believe the board can be improved, and have raised your issue eloquently and respectfully.
I understand the point you are trying to make and I think it's a valid question worth responding to.

It's true robbie and I are not the most prolific posters on this board, but I've always believed in quality over quantity. That doesn't mean we are absent. We have in the past tried to initiate a number of initiatives to boost traffic, and continue to do so now - some work, some don't - it's very much trial and error. And this is continuing on with the new sub-boards which will be happening any day now.

Where we are fortunate is that we have a number of excellent posters who are capable of creating many interesting threads which stimulate discussion. You mention Southswans, and he certainly fits into this category - I may have had a shot at him before, but he is a quality poster, he has a number of interesting ideas which the board has benefited from greatly, and his dedication is to be admired.
We have posters like liz and TheMase who know the club inside out and are always willing to chime in with informative and useful posts. We have posters like Dudley and Sanecow who enjoy a laugh and taking the piss occasionally. Astute analysts such as grimlock, Tuco and RUNVS, those who wear their heart on their sleeve such as bedford, and not to mention the "roomies" girls who bring their own brand of fun and levity to the board, and we can't forget the recently and sadly departed rancidpants13 and .Shotties.

The activity these users and many others add here makes for a vibrant and thriving community, and one that does not always necessarily need an extra "push" to get things moving.
But sometimes that's what it does need, and I'd like to think that in those times is when robbie and I step into the breach and try and whip up a little enthusiasm if things start to flag.
I think you underestimate our contributions here Corpuscles, but I am also willing to take your comments on board. Hopefully this board can continue to grow.
Your point about encouraging interaction with opposition supporters is well made, and I agree 100%. I'd like to see more posters from opposition clubs feel welcome to post here (provided of course they do so without being obnoxious).

In response to MalceskiFan, rest assured suggestions are not ignored. We certainly appreciate user feedback and suggestions, and try to take ideas on board. Not all of them are always practical, but if we find something we think will improve the place then we try and get it up and running. Sometimes for varying reasons outside our control things can get delayed or overlooked. A case in point is the "subheading" for our board - I threw it open for suggestions, and while some of the suggestions were very funny, I didn't come across one which I thought was suitable. The tongue-in-cheek ones were very entertaining, but nothing stood out as a serious contender (we're still on the lookout for suggestions for that one). A number of times in the past I have started a thread, or posted in an existing thread such as this one looking for user feedback on ways of improving our board. All suggestions are considered seriously, but it's not always feasible to run with every one.

Now onto some news.

Sometime very soon, "Club Roomie" will cease to exist in it's current format. There will still be a board for the "roomie" type discussions, but it will expanded to include a number of player related topics. There will be a thread dedicated to each player - much like on Club Roomie now, but primarily concerned with football related issues regarding the players. Hopefully in 2009 these threads will develop into the "Adopt-a-Swan" project we had running here a couple of years ago, where a poster chooses a specific player to stalk....er, I mean.... "follow the progress of" throughout the season, and report back to the board on how thay are going - especially handy for some of our younger players who not all our posters get a chance to see.

As this will be a player related board, then it is only natural that a major feature of this board will be..................(drum roll)............PLAYER OF THE YEAR VOTING! The leaderboard will be stickied, as well as the current week's voting thread.
And let's not forget the roomies. Naturally the roomies thread will still be there going strong.

Now - the final piece in the jigsaw - a name for the board. We needed something to indicate that it was a board related to player discussion, and names like "The Locker Room" and "Roster Watch" have already been snapped up by other team boards. For a while I considered "Player Stalking" as an appropriate name, but in the end decided to give that one a miss.
"The Locker Room" being already in use, I started to consider other places players might congregate. "The Pub" didn't quite have the right ring to it. "The training track" wasn't bad, but I needed something snappier. "The interchange bench"? Not bad, but at the SCG the bench is known by another name.
The name that was ideal for our new board.

So, ladies and gentlemen, please keep your eyes peeled for our new, improved sub-board, (hopefully arriving this weekend)...

The board for all our player related gossip, and if we're very lucky, the new name might just encourage the great man himself to come and join the fun (I know you're reading this Luffy)
