Whats the point of this thing?? Twice in the 3rd on saturday your lot scored a goal to bring you back closer to the game. Now when you did this, the tiges fans around me all looked up to the scoreboard in hushed (and i mean hushed) expectation. Then just as the bounce was restarting the game the roar meter appeared and the tiges fans started to cheer along with it. Firstly why? The previous cheer for the goal had already taken place, 2nd while doing this, twice the Hawks responed with quick clearances and goals that seemed to make it (the response to the roar meter) redundant in the extreme.

I thought (in past years) one of the things i truly HATED about the tiges was their ability to really REALLY yell and cheer for their team whenever a run on was happening. This wasnt an artificial thing, it was soemthing when they got a bit of a run on, they could lift their side through continious and LOUD support.

With this 'americanised, sanitised' Roar meter?? It just didnt seem to do anything at all, except dilute when its purpose is to do the complete opposite.

So, question, why the hell is it their and do you think its a good idea or just another stupid marketing tool dreamed up from some tool in marketing???

Cheers

Grendel, I didn't see or hear much of it in the last half. What could possibly have been wrong with it? Oh yeah. You've got to kick a goal before they'll whack it on the board.

Almost as pointless as Let's Get Loud when we played Essendon or Doggie, Doggie Doggie, Woof....

When they were all roaring Dixon took a mark in the forward line, which prompted me to wonder if the reason the Roar Metre had gone over 100 was due to the Hawthorn cheers as well! :D

Pointless trash, don't see why any club needs it.

That roar meter is a joke - just like J Lo for Essendon and doggie doggie doggie for the bulldogs (and...our cheerleader losers we had last year!). I hate putting americanisms into our game...it's a good enough game as it is - only boring games (ie. basketball - I'll probably be shot down for saying that) should have these gimmicks.

It doesn't bother me - I scarcely notice it now.

I feel (and it might be just a feeling) that it is considerably less embarrassing than the Bulldog's animated dog. I wasn't at the Essendon game to "get Loud" with J-Lo so I can't comment.

If the kids like it then I'm not especially against it.

In a nutshell - 75 words to say virtually nothing. And I don't even barrack for Essendon or Collingwood!!

Call me a humourless Essendon twit TT (and you did ) but I found Richmonds game on the WeekEnd extremly funny. Does that mean I am progressing and can now see the funny side? :p

From my brief observations of the Roar meter, I have found there is little correlation between the result of the Roar meter and the actual noise of the crowd.

I believe the Roarmeter is rigged! There must be an inquiry. Why hasn't Caroline Wilson investigated it. Could it be a Richmond cover up?

Yep neither.

Our dog is better then ur ****ty fuken scoreboard that says kouta everytime he gets "near" the ball. A classic example VS the Dogs silvagni tapped ther ball to the boundry then SOS comes up on that scoreboard:confused:

True our scoreboard sux, but there's no way that its as infuriating as that doggie stuff. You don't have to look at the scoreboard, but blocking your ears still lets some sound through unfortunately.

When the Roar Meter was first introduced, it seemed a good idea and worked pretty well. This was because it was displayed immediately after the goal while the crowd was still cheering anyway.

Then they figured that since all the punters were looking at the scoreboard anyway, they may as well put some ads on first (Sa... Ka... Ta...)

Now there doesn't appear to be any method to when it is run - I thought they had changed it to coincide with the bounce of the ball (at the time when the TV station is returning from the ad break) but even then it often comes on early.

My view - Unless it is shown immediately after the goal is kicked, do away with it. Having it on a minute after the goal, and once everyone has settled down again, does seem a little contrived and embarrasing.

Oh and Hawk fans....

I wouldn't be too critical if I was you! I remember being at a Hawthorn home game last year and to celebrate a goal you display some footage of your Hawk mascot spinning out in a hovercraft....

I mean, what the hell is that about?

Can't say I remember it but it's not there now. Hawka and his hovercraft are fantastic, but they should stick to the pregame show. Still, Hawka was looking a bit better than your weedy mascot on the weekend, he looked like an anorexic version of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh! :D :D

LOL! Agree with you there GH!

Grendel I replied to your post re: the Roar meter on the Rivals board, but I will post it again here for you.

I don't really see the point of it either, unless they put it on straight after the goal umpire has signaled a goal so that the initial reaction of the crowd can be measured. The only problem with this is that the replay is usualy on the big screen at this time, but surely they can have it on the side, whilst the replay is occuring.

When I asked someone from the club recently about it, they said that it was basically for the kids. But I think if they are going to have something like that at the football it needs to be marketed to a wider audience.

Finally, I have had a poll regarding this issue for a week now at Roar Power (haha the name is purely coincidence) the current results are:

Should the 'roar meter' stay or go?

go 31 Votes - 37%

stay 42 Votes - 51%

don't care 10 Votes - 12%

[Total Votes - 83]

The poll is still running but only for a couple more days! So if you haven't already and would like to do so, make your opinion count by voting, as I will be passing the results on to Tony Greenberg (as he knows I run the site) for him and the marketing department too see. So far as you can see, they won't be in a hurry to dump it!

CJH, i wasnt having a go at the Tiges, just questioing why such a club that did have a great 'roar' needed something like the
roar meter. Even so, you pretty much summed up how i thought most (and from the reaction of tiges around me at the game) felt about (meter) it. I guess im just another old timer thats thinking how silly some of these 'innovations' fit into Aussie Rules.

Tigerboy, thanks for the reply and i looked at your site too. Didnt vote though, thought id leave that to your own fans! ;)

I quite liked the Essendon 'get loud'. Even though the avalanche of essendon goals was annoying for me the music seemed to soften the blow somehow.

Now wasn't it a shame about Wellman. If dermie had done that he would'v got 9 weeks !
