Why did Darren Jarman come to Victoria to play for Hawthorn when the Crows were just about to enter the AFL? Did he enter the draft and was picked up by Hawthorn or did we receive him as some sort of compensation for losing Tony Hall?

Just curious, I was discussing this with a mate recently and we couldn't work out why he didn't just stay in Adelaide to play with his brother at the Crows. Adelaide can't have been too happy at not initially picking him up I'm sure

Didnt he come over before the Crows entered the AFL?

I think he was originally drafted by Melbourne, in the very beginning, that lapsed when he didn't come. then you guys drafted him.

however, he had agreed to join the crows, and that over-rode any prior draft arrangements.

When it came to signing the contract and agreeing terms, he got so disenfranchised by then team manager Neil Kerley's attitude that he eventually told them to shove it, and agreed to go to hawthorn.

But basically he was a crows player, had a big barney with management, and moved to Hawthorn in anger.

Ended with 3 premiership medallions so I made the right choice; stayed around for 1991; Hawks, then moved over to the Crows in 1996 and weaving his magic in the finals series.

One question crows-mosone, if Jarman played for Adelaide from the very beginning do you think Adelaide would have probably won the 1993 Premiership on reflection; hence saving Cornes from the axe 2 seasons later?

I guess we can thank Knuckles then for Jarman's years at Hawthorn! I'd probably spit the dummy too if I had to deal with a moron like Kerley.

unquestionably Yes, he might well have been the difference. more to the point, I was going to mention that in the above post, but decided not to.

under the circumstances, and looking at the games we lost in 1993, I think it is very easy to draw that line of logic.

You have to wonder how these 2 brothers would be judged if they were Victorian.

2 of the most purest and most skillfull players Ive seen.

Andrew(or was it Darren?? I always mix em up) single handedly won the Crows 2 premierships.

as a pair, they have to be two of the best brothers to play footy in modern times.

Darren is a genius and Andrew, while temperamental won a couple of magarey medals and was ball magnet in the centre.

both could do anything either foot and hand. Darren had more hurt to his possessions, Andrew was a creator.

oh and it was darren who won us the flags.

Hawthorn actually picked him up from Brisbane in the 1990 draft, as outlined here.

"Hawthorn gained Brisbane’s hold on Darren Jarman in return for trading the No.10 selection in the 1990 national draft to the Bears.

At the time, this looked like a reasonable deal. Jarman had already been drafted by Melbourne in 1986, but had failed to come across from South Australia. He was then drafted by Brisbane in 1989, but told the Bears he was more likely to play in Bombay than Brisbane (or Carrara, as the case may have been). So rather than waste any more time, the Bears managed to secure a prized high draft pick for the reluctant star.

With the No.10 pick, they chose David Ogg from Swan Districts. Ogg played nine games. Jarman played in a premiership in his first season at Hawthorn before, in 1995, becoming the first player to win a club best-and-fairest award while never getting out of a jog. Then he was gone, moving home to Adelaide and further glory."

yes but these draft rights were trumped when he agreed to join the crows. as previously stated.

From the Crows point of view, another disappontment was that Richard Champion who really wanted to play for AFC was shipped off to Brisbane. Adelaide could take him or D Jarman, but not both. With Jars the first choice and then renegging they got neither.

The most annoying thing about this is had Cornes been given another season as coach we could have had both Chad and Kane Cornes as father-son selections! Talk about ********ing me off!

I'm not aware of Kerley's playing credentials at all, I just remember him from Channel 7 broadcasts where he constantly acted like a moron as previously stated.

Now that's just being selfish because:
A: They wouldn't be as happy.
B: They wouldn't each have a Premiership Medallion!

Kerley played in the SANFL for his whole career. He was a ruck-rover who played for West Adelaide in 1952, then from 1955-63. From 1964-66 he was at South Adelaide and from 1967-69, he played for Glenelg. He was a playing coach at two clubs with which he had won flags and he later won two as a non-playing coach.

Just for a little trivia, when the Herald Sun newspaper in 1999 made their list for the Top 200 footballers of all-time, Kerley came in at 160. For the people interested in the Jarman brothers, Darren (who won Adelaide two flags), was number 58 and Andrew (the one who was at Adelaide at the beginning), didn't get a place.
