Hi guys sorry to barge in un-invited, but can I ask if any of you saw much of Milne last season? He was on our Sup. list now he's on yours.

I was surprised that not only the Dons didn't draft him but no other club either last year. He played very well '99 in the reserves and starred in the reserves premiership, along with Rama and J. Johnson (look what happened to them). Did any of you Saints fans see him or was he injured?

I believe he'd compliment most forward lines (small forward) and could be a second string midfielder too. Just hope someone takes him onto their senior list this Sunday because he deserves a shot at the big time.

Cheers.
Thanks in advance.

Saw a fair bit of Milne last year in the ressies. He had a great year and is a chance to be drafted this year, at the very least retained on the supp list. He has great goal sense and kicked a few bags of 5+ last year.

His most spectacular effort last year was a non goal. A saints player had a shot on the run from about 40 meters. As the ball was heading through the middle of the goals Milne, who had broken free of his man, tried a scissor volley kick. The ball subsequently landed 25 meters in the forward pocket. Every one in the crowd was pissing themselves.

We have two late picks in the draft at 84 and 85, I believe Milne should be taken with one of these picks.

Rice,

According to the saints website, he along with Mark Wittison have been retained on our rookie list for another year.

A lot of us remember the 1999 Reserves GF when he killed us.

Surprisingly, we picked him at no 22 in the rookie draft which is very low considering 100 players were already chosen in the national draft before him.

Your exactly right about him. He was one of our better players all year, kicked quite a few goals in the forward pocket and started playing in the midfield later in the year. Has a future

STL,

Because Milne is in our rookie list, we do not need to take him in the draft. If we wanted him on the senior list, we would just have to promote him like we did with Chad Davis at the end of 1999.

There is a guy on the supp list who we should select in the draft. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.

I love that story about the scissor kick effort in the goal square. I heard he was dragged in a matter of seconds. Wish I saw it!

Thanks for the responces guys. Forgot about that London game Walshy, he starred didn't he.

So can any club pick him in the draft if they want him for their senior list, I still can't work out the Sup. list? Otherwise he'll have to rely on a long term injury before he gets a chance of a call up. I hope for him the statement on the website is a smokescreen for opposition clubs Sainter.

Cheers.

Milne is an absolute sensation and kicked about 50 goals in the VFL this year which in itself was amazing considering the coach only played him for 5 minutes for the first 5 or so games.

He kicked some big bags & killed some good players, I too was amazed Sheeds didn't decide to rookie list him at very least.

He has been retained on the St.Kilda senior list & if he can bulk up over summer then I suggest he will be ready to play some senior football in 2001.

Oh and Sainter, I definitely know the player you are talking about.....I haven't shut up about him all year.

Here's hoping some magic comes our way on Sunday :-)

Rice,

The rookie list can be made up of a maximum of 4 players. They have to be under the age of 23 and are selected in the "rookie draft" which immediately follows the pre-season draft in December. I think they are paid half the minimum rate of an AFL player. They can added to the list at the expense of a player added to the long-term injury list or someone that is delisted.

The supplementary list is made up of top-up players. Because the lists were 42 and now 38, there are not enough players to form a reserves side after players are selected for the senior team. These players can play all season for their selected team in the reserves but have no affiliation with the team and can be drafted by anyone in the national draft.

Milne is on our rookie list and we have the option of promoting him to the senior list, retaining him as a rookie or delisting him. We chose the middle option.

On the other hand, there is a guy on our supplementary list who many of us saints fans have a high opinion of and we are praying that another club doesn't jump in and grab him before us.

Sorry for harping on a little bit but if you were interested in an explanation, you got one.

By the way, your welcome in our rooms. Not as fun as the bomber and roos boards. I haven't left a message but have had a good laugh.

Savatage,

We will have to start the ______ ____ fan club if he gets drafted.

Got to be worth a late draft pick!

Thanks again guys, I had been meaning to follow his progress last year but forgot all about him. Milne caused a big fuss on the Bomber forum (RIP) end of last season, many saw him as a future champ.

Sainter thanks for the invitation, hope you had a chance to grab a Grange "roady" on your way out of Windy Hill

You can tell me the name of this super star on the sup. list, I'll just keep it to myself

Cheers guys.

Could you please confirm that Daniel Wulf (?sp) is the player that you were both alluding to above?

If so, it's a feather in the cap of the football dept to sneak him thru, well done guys.

I thought this thread was topical, considering next week is Stephen Milne's 200th match for our club. Clearly the Essendon supporter, RICE80SF, saw enough in Milne to enquire about him after we "Rookied" him. He probably has a better eye for talent than many of the recruiters who overlooked Milne.

And thank goodness they did. :D

Sorry - I got distracted with the Wulf-man reference!!! Good athlete, but still can't forgive him hitting the post from 2m out (leaving us with a draw against the Swans in a miserable year for the club).

But sounds as though Milney's soccer volley was even better. Don't think he saw eye to eye with the Marshmallow man, who had his favourites.

Great thread. Also shows that insight will always outweigh having first pick - good players can be found with any pick in a draft.

The only thing this thread tells us is that I have been posting on Big Footy for far too long!

Actually it was going pretty well until our mutual Daniel Wulf lovefest started! :D

Savatage and I went to all of our VFL games in 2000. We had a standalone team that season and it was great watching a St Kilda team in the VFL. Milne and Wulf were our two standouts. Milney was on our rookie list (after his 3 goal performance in the 1999 reserves Grand Final for Essendon against St Kilda!) and Wulf was on the supplementary list. Not surprisingly Wulf was drafted on the back of his excellent season but didn't really go on with it while Milne was elevated to the senior list.

That's what I love about Milney. Nothing came easy for him and he's had to fight to get to where he is today. He firstly had to overcome the disappointment of not getting drafted. Essendon gave him a lifeline by putting him on their supplementary list (which basically meant he was a reserves player with no option of getting upgraded to the senior list). At the end of the season we picked him up with a second round pick in the rookie draft and he played the entire season in the St Kilda VFL side coached by Peter Banfield. Finally, at the end of 2000, he was rewarded with a promotion to the senior list.

And next week, he plays his 200th game.

Legend. :thumbsu:

This thread was a great read. Good effort to have dug that one up from the old dusty archives of BigFooty. :thumbsu:

Daniel Wulf, wasn't he the guy that hit the post from close range when we had that draw against Sydney back in 2002 in one of the worst games of all time?

I think a young Riewoldt was about the only highlight. Even back then his talent stood out.

I remember that game, it was dal's first real big game aswell...well first game i noticed him. Remember he had a torpe from 65 to try and steal the game after the siren and fell short by a about 3, shattered!

The one and only.

Last I heard he was playing in the WAFL.

Is he still over there?

Not sure, I don't really follow the WAFL much these days.

I know Michael Rix was over here playing for my club Subiaco.

The WAFL seems to be a popular destination for delisted AFL footballers these days.

Wow, that's interesting.

I wrongly assumed that he'd returned to St Mary's.

He'd be one to keep an eye on if he goes alright and puts on a bit of a weight.

He'd go alright in the WAFL wouldn't he?

Matt Ferguson was another who was playing over there. I'm not sure if he's returned to Melbourne but I did see him at the intra-club game earlier in the year.

I didn't see much of Rix playing at Subiaco but I think he went pretty well last season. There isn't too many quality ruckmen around at that level.

Yeah. That doesn't surprise me about Rix. He was the best VFL ruckman in the league at Coburg before we picked him up. He never quite made it at AFL level but it wasn't through lack of effort.

Chris Oliver!

He was always a skinny type when he was with us. I thought he had a bit of potential.
