Umpiring Questionable Umpiring Decisions

All I have to say is, it's time to bring in a challenge system like in tennis. Each team gets 3 challenges a match and.. this might sound ridiculous...an umpire in the stands who communicates with the other umps and has a booming big brother voice via mic lol. The call is reviewed by all the umps, and they come to a consensus. I don't think anyone who is really interested in the fairness and integrity of the game can disagree.
Absolutely not

the obsession with umpiring is out of control - and your suggestion is to make it even more of a spectacle.

Take the Sicily incident yesterday. You can argue whether it was a free kick or not but Tom Green DEFINITELY made a mistake by bumping instead of going for a tackle or smother. Absolutely NOBODY is talking about that error and it is way more significant.

The Max King error with the umpiring - St Kilda were open in the forward line anyway. Probably REDUCED their chances of kicking it by giving it to Max King for the sealer. The free kick did not decide the game. The free kick came at a time when the game was close so people notice it a lot more.

AFL media loves the umpriing talk because everyone froths over it and click on everything. At games now the fans cheer a free kick as loudly as they cheer a huge mark. Everyone is getting lured into an umpire obsession and it's ridiculous.

I honestly can't believe the AFL does a review and then tells the fans which decisions were right and wrong. How about- the umpires, like everyone else, are making split second decisions and they're going to get it wrong sometimes and you just have to accept it because it's not going to change the result of the game that is already finished.

Sicily free was fine in my opinion and contact after disposal has been fairly consistent this year...

It was the 3 free kicks Hawks players milked leading up to that moment that I took issue with. umps just imposed themselves on the game as they did with Yeo/King and couldn't wait to blow the whistle for some reason (unconscious bias?), suddenly throwing the head back and dropping into tackles was a free kick again...

Ha flipping hell ... McBurney is all over the place.

"We totally understand why he's paid it because he has seen arms around .... but we don't think it constitutes holding"

Andrew had his arms around King ..... clearly that's holding you dumb sock

As for Yeo he took hold of the ball like players do a hundred times in game and was tackled immediately .... and hundred times a game that's a ball up ..... so players now can't take hold of the ball ... they should knock it on at all costs??

Just horrible from the AFL's Head of Officiating

You missed the part where king has his back to the play grabs Mac Daddy and spins them both around...

If arms around is a holding free pay it:
  • at clearances
  • at ruck contests
  • to defenders
  • all game to BOTH teams and all players not just big name key forwards in the dying minutes...

I can’t wait for the day Richmond receive a dodgy free to win a game. Actually even just a dodgy free at any time would be nice.
One day.
I feel (some) of your pain - here's the free kick ladder.

But &*(& me if Tom Hawkins doesn't get umpired differently when it comes to fifty metre penalties

There's a 6 minute video on youtube of all the favourable calls Richmond got in the 2017 GF, I guess the wait is over, enjoy.

Do it!!

They paid it to Curnow In the last quarter yesterday and not ferkin peep from the Media

And sorry King never had his arms around Andrew .... he was trying to push through and Andrew wrapped him

We need a thread to record the games where the results are decided by incompetent umpiring.

Surely we're in double figures so far this this.

And yes, happy for the free against Rankine in the Collingwood game to be listed.

Last years Prelim will get a run.

Yep that 6 mins really was the difference in our 48 point win. Probably set up our 2 other flags as well. Our dynasty all down to that 6 mins.
Actually just checked free kick count, absolutely dominated the game for 5 more frees… you’ve got to let it go, it’s been 7 years.

Maybe I'm spliting hairs but there should be a difference between dragging the ball in and sitting/lying on top of it (think the Draper incident) compared to what Yeo did which is pick the ball up on his knees.
Not quite on his knees. The ball was rolling away and Yeo reached out as he was falling and dragged it in.

If he left it, Ryan probably would have picked it up which is what the rule is designed for.

They said it shouldn't have been a free kick because both players were holding, not that the action didnt warrant a free kick.

As for Yeo, it is a free. Hawks got pinged twice for it about 3 weeks ago, the only times ive seen it paid all year until the Yeo one.

If you are on the ground and want to take possession, you need to keep your arms out. You cant pull it into your body. As soon as the umps see you have your arms out then pull it in to your body, the onus is on that player to get it out.

On AFL 360 (Monday) they tried to equate the Yeo decision with another incident in the Dees v Pies game, ignoring one glaring difference: The ball wasnt on the ground when the player took possession. In that incident the player on the ground grabbed the ball out of the air (think it was hand balled), in which case it is not considered dragging it in as the ball is not on the ground, only the player.

I.wouldnt call that a drag. Looks more like him taking possession of a slippery ball and fumbling it slightly.

The only thing controversial about a lot of these free kicks is they happened late in the game.

Exactly. Over the weekend there were a few frees for late hits, late tackles, late whatever.

Only one of them in the last 2 minutes of the game.

If its a free kick it should be paid always.

The level of bitching feels more about concern about a team rising than anything else.

The lack of HTB for Breust was a far bigger issue but that was 4 minutes to go, not 2 minutes to go.

I agree - damn I was filthy with Tom Green for that action so late in the game.

But only that decision.

The free kicks that preceded that for Newcombe and Ginnivan were a disgrace.

The umpires got caught up with the emotion and their decision-making suffered.

And the lack of HTB for Breust? Or we just focus on the ones the winning team gets ?

The game wasnt too bad and the mistakes were fairly even across both teams. If 17 minutes into the 2nd quarter then noone would be talking about the Sicily downfield.

I was referring to the 3 free kicks in the last few minutes that everyone else was talking about.

If you want to throw a spanner in the works, go for your life.

Your post is a 'look over there' response.

I'm not interested.

Because the only frees which count are the ones the winning team gets in the last few minutes.

BTW Newcombe had a GWS player grab him high at the start of the tackle and the arm was still high as they hit the ground and was still high when the umpire blew his whistle, and was even still high when the GWS player used his other arm to protest to the umpire.

But sure, it was late and we won so lets bitch about it.

It was late and incorrect.

Tackling over the shoulder is allowed ?

Strange that the action by the umpire to indicate the free is to tap the top of their shoulder.

The downfield was incorrect he was clearly knocked in the motion of kicking.
