Ben Johnson has mentioned that he will play for another season.

Leon is a curious case. Don't think a decision has been made yet but is a work in progress and undecided at this stage. Has another year in him whether he play here or in WA. Or perhaps he retires. Time will tell.

Signing Dawes I don't think will be an issue. He has expressed that Collingwood is the team he will sign with and money isn't a factor.

Pendlebury next year. Expect that to be the issue. GWS will chuck EVERYTHING at him. Won't be an easy decision for him to make.
Success now v Future success. Money v Loyalty.
Not easy.

I wouldn't be too worried about Pendlebury. I seriously do not see him leaving.

As for Davis, can someone explain to me why he wants to go back to WA? He's been in Melbourne for a decade now, I'm assuming his family would be here in Melbourne and only his relatives would be over at WA.

I hope Clarke is more committed this time round if he comes back. It'd be a shame if he cracks the shits and leaves if he spends a year in the VFL again because thats where he'll probably spending most of the season.

Got to say the club has timed things well. In a shallow draft that is compromised by GWS we only have 1 retirement and most of our players are looking good for next year, plus we'll pick up Witts with our last pick. If there was ever a year where we only wanted to draft 3 players it would be this year, and really with Witts it will only be 2.

how do we know clarke isnt gonna go to Ireland again in 2-3 years? WHY DO WE WANT him farout. His an attacking halfback right? shaw o'brian reid alll have him covered
he'll just play in the vfl until an injury (then buckley and goldy can come in anyway?)

I'd think he'd be a likely replacement for Ben Johnson as a winger/half back. Good skills, good tank and decent speed. Goldsack and Buckley have been tried in this position and haven't exactly delivered.

To be fair on Goldsack he hasn't had a preseaon in 2 or 3 years.

I'm pretty sure Clarke would know himself if he was ready to commit or not to the club for the rest of his playing days. When he was first drafted he probably didn't know what he was getting himself into and what he was going to be missing out on. Now he does.

It is fair to question Clarke's spot in the 22. I think he is in instead of Toovey, but I know people on this board (and at the club) rate Toovey more than I do. As has been mentioned, he could also play wing or even half-forward, or run as a defensive midfielder, but the only match-up he probably would have had on the weekend would be someone like Kelly.

I agree Johnson replacement, but to be honest, I can't fit Johnson into my best 22 for 2012 either.

I still want Clarke at the club, but wouldn't be shattered if we missed out. To be honest, I am a little disappointed that a) he left in the first place, and b) he didn't come back last year when he could have been put straight back onto the list. And now he decides he wants to come back when he will cost us a first round pick

Would there be any interest in Jesse White, has lots of potential and could fill the spot left by Leigh Brown.

He would probably come pretty cheap also.

For me I would like to see the following happen to the senior list:

INS: Jesse White & 3 draft choices.

OUT: McCarthy, Macaffer & Dick (Trade)
OUT: Brown (Retired)

Yeah, if the club had of known it would have been worth it to add Clarke to the list last year and let him play overseas for a year while taking up a spot, then renew his contract when he came back. Kind of like what happened with Tadhg Kennelly. Still, it also depends on how the trade is made and if we get someone else with him and how they turn out.

the kid better be good for us to give up our first round pick.. if we get fasolo with 45 what can we do with 25. Clarke is a middle age fringe player who lacks afl fitness and hasnt played it in a few years. Does anyone know who the kid is

Correct me if im wrong but didnt he miss out on the 2010 afl draft for not being good enough? i dont really wanna see our top pick go for a fringe irishmen who hasnt played afl in 2 years and a kid who wasnt good enough to be drafted 12 months ago
If we use our first pick we get a kid who hasn't played afl in ANY years and hasn't shown that he can make it at AFL like Clarke.

I dont mind trading off that first pick for someone like clarke and a player that hine thinks is good value

i guess it worked last year with Krak and Ceglar

Lets face it, weve got some good depth, but were lacking a bit of experience in the 2's aswell. having marty back in the fold would be great... id even be happy to use him up forward. and at worst, hes a better player than a kid that we could grab, hes had afl experience, he'll come cheap and hes good depth... how do we lose by picking him up again?

I wouldn't mind us getting Jesse White at all. We could see whether we could turn his fortunes around and he could be a stop gap to help Jolly out and while we develop younger ruckman. And importantly key forward insurance and depth.

He could definitely slot into Browns role - although it would put some emphasis on the need for some speed in the forward half with our small forwards.

But it would be about cost. I think if we could trade one of our fringe guys I would do it. McCarthy Goldsack etc. Sydney like recycled players and could see the value in it and we wouldn't need to find a list spot for him or pay overs.

Could be a win win situation.

I've never rated White but then again I never rated Leroy either. One thing I've noticed about White however is that he looks like he lacks commitment. Too often I've seen him not chasing or giving up.

Edit: When I said I didn't rate Leroy I meant before he was at the Pies.

Yeah thats true. Thats where the turning him around part comes in. If we weren't giving up anything we were going to miss i.e. a fringe player looking for greater opportunities elsewhere I think it would make a lot of sense from a list balance perspective. We would get some key forward depth and a mature and versatile ruck option (or maybe starter).
