Quigley's 2012 Mock

Tazwegian, remember when Mav Weller was a top 5/top 10 prospect? Remember when Scott Clayton called Jesse Crichton the "gift of the draft"? If anything Tasmanians are overrated, not underrated.

Great work Quigley, yours is always the best mock draft on bigfooty because you actually have the courage to post players' negatives and don't have everyone in the 50s and 60s projected to be stars of the game. Very detailed and in some cases more realistic appraisals, always an excellent read.

Thankfully you are not on the Saints recruiting team Quigley - your selections for the Saints are the worst phantom draft I have seen. Im sure a number if other clubs would be very happy how your draft fell for them!

Perhaps you could offer some alternatives rather than just telling him how bad the selections are. Given the effort put in to explaining selections and the players the fact that you would come out and criticise with two sentences is pretty poor tbh. If you're going to criticise something that is fine but at least put in a bit effort. I dont see you putting up a detailed alternative?

Would be only just that you should put in similar effort in your counter arguments

Thanks for the read Quigley. A cracking effort as usual.

Would be interested to hear if you considered taking a defender with either of Brisbane last two picks given we have some forward prospects coming through the academy next year. Do you see tickner being used down back?

Even worse than this one?
I have compiled a list of players that will be available to the SAINTS at Selections # 9, 27, 59, 75 & 91. The players are ranked in order of perceived ability and the clubs list needs.

I would like to see us use at least 4 selections at the draft to fill our priorities – Midfielders x (speed/class) & Key Position Defenders (size/ability) & Ruckmen (size/quality).

I think what he meant to say is, recently we have preferring to draft players with relatively good kicking skills. Because for the past few years the like of Sam Gilbert and Clinton Jones have hurt us pretty bad.

You know more than us, but from saints fans perspectives on the day I think we would prefer a combination of Rodda/Wood, Temay/Broomhead who you have with closely following picks . As I think the Recruiting/Coaching staff have realised basic skills are vital in the modern game.

Other than that a very interesting and detailed draft as always !! :thumbsu:

As usual there are clowns who can't see the woods from the trees and bitch on about their clubs "selections". STFU about your club and, actually take this for what it's intended - an extremely informative insight into players that most people don't know much about. Any moron can chuck a few names in a particular order in the hope of looking smart if it turns out that way, but Quigley/Knightmare/Chris/Snoop actually watch these guys regularly and can point out their strengths, weaknesses and make informed predictions about how good they might end up being rather than just reading puff pieces from the Herald Sun and claiming them as fact.

A bit of a rant, but it just shits me that someone can look at the order, see something they don't like, then scroll through that massive block of in depth information, just to put up some bitchy little reply.

Great work Quigley and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all that!

Nah, they were from before I was really paying much attention to the draftees. Anyway, it was Quigley who claimed that Tasmanians are underrated in this thread. I just claimed that Thurlow specifically has been underrated, in my opinion, by bigfooty posters. I didn't even say that he was underrated because he is Tasmanian. I argued at length using plenty of reasons that I think are valid as to why he should go higher than what the "old" consensus on his draft position was (which was around 65-70). Again, it was Quigley who implied that his underrating is due to him being Tasmania in his write up on Thurlow in this thread. Quigley wrote:

"If Thurlow had been a Vic Country player and got 45 possessions against Metro, made the AA team and was named his team’s best player at the Champs then I am sure virtually everyone on here would be saying he is a certainty to be taken in the first round"

So I am not really sure why you directed that question at me and not him. What I do believe is that a division two player is sometimes a riskier recruit, because it is harder to judge them relative to their division one cohorts. So there is a bit of potential for a slide factor, based on that.

Anyway, pretty sure that arguing that Mav and Jesse were "overrated" in hindsight is a bit fallacious. Were you arguing that they were overrated at the time? Just because a junior doesn't reach his potential, doesn't mean they were overrated when they were draft age.

Do you mention that you are from Tasmania in every post you make?

No. Ironically, the only post I forgot to mention that fact in is the post that you happened to quote. Thanks for the question anyway, even though the answer should have been self evident.

PS: I am from Tasmania.

Fantastic read, loved the detailed write ups. :thumbsu:

No love for Aiden Corr, who is now being tipped in some places to go in the first 15?

I only saw him in the Tassie game this year and was not that impressed. He has good height and speed not sure about the rest of his game though. Very lean build and only managed just a tick over 10 possessions a game in the TAC. Good closing speed but he needs to use it and I think against better opposition he will be found out. I accept that he will get taken in this range but I rate the others I have included as being better. I have seen so little of him that I could easily be wrong but just going on what I have seen.

Thoughts on Siggins? Is it a lack of agility and speed that you have not rated him as being selected? I have my doubts about him going also, but I'd like to see him have a shot at AFL.

I usually tend to have a Tasmanian tall or two in each draft but they are rarely taken for some reason. Last year I had guys like Doboscz and Brown and I rated them much higher than Siggins. Siggins has nice height but the holes I see as being significant. Rookie draft at best I think for him.

It was pointed out to me last night that Jaksch has really been mostly a forward to date and it was only this year that he was tried down back. He has really only been on my radar this year and I did not pay attention to him prior to that. When I saw a bit of him before he was defending and it seemed like a more natural position for him. Sorry for the misinformation on that one.

Fair call. I am really unsure how to rate his chances. I'd like to see his combine results, because I think he is one of those guys who needed a strong combine, or at least needed to show he wasn't hugely deficient in some areas. He can definitely play, but I am worried about his agility and closing speed. Rumour is that he has received plenty of interest from clubs though. However, I do think the best KDPs this year are Plowman, Clurey, Corr and then a pretty large gap in between them and the next couple, which would include Siggins.

It takes a certain skill to say the most with the least words - fair to say you need to work on that skill Quigley ;)

Other than that, great read and good to see some thoughts on the Division 2 kids. :thumbsu:

Dont want to pick at what is a brilliant job, but Geelong dont have pick 59. Apart from that a super mock.

I noticed this too.

Pick #59 belongs to the Suns, as does pick #60. But since we're using these picks as a rookie upgrade (Horsley - #59) and zone access (Cameron - #60), perhaps Quigley skipped over them? As they aren't 'live' picks.

Also Quigs, have you got a write-up for Clay Cameron? If so, I would love to read it. I'd even put in on Clay's thread on our board so others have a better understanding of his capabilities.

Sensational read mate!!

As for the phantom side of it I'm not so sure on Hannath at 21. We obviously need ruck depth, but our young midfield stocks outside of the best 22 IMO are abysmal. When I look at our projected midfield in the VFL next year I see just two genuine midfielders there in Seedsman and the perenerally injured Josh Thomas who were drafted at 76 and 75 in their respective drafts.

Getting at least 2 midfielders with that 3 pick cluster would be a no brainer because as a club we need to again rejuvenate with top end talent through there especially with the likes of Hrovat and Vlastuin still in the pool. I realise they may be more of the lesser liked players in your opinion, but they were selected around then and I'd prefer we err on the side of small rather than tall in this draft.

Also I'm sure it's a quirk more than anything, but something tells me we'll draft a Victorian with one of our first four picks. Hine is a consistent recruiter with the types he looks for so to pick exclusively from interstate (3 from SA and one from WA) would be breaking the mould IMO.

In saying all that you posting one of Vlastuin or Hrovat with 21 and I'd have been wrapt with how things went. So I can't complain really.

Nice work Quiqley, a huge amount of effort has gone into this and as always you've put yourself out there which isn't always easy.

Interesting that you have Garlett very high but Menzel quite low, certainly understand the concerns over Menzel's body, but it seems as though that has seen him slip whereas Garlett has been simply rated on talent without too much consideration on whether or not he has the attitude to make it at the next level. Personally would love the Dogs to end up with Garlett because he is a great talent and a type we really need, as you suggest, hopefully he'll be in the mix at 22. Very keen on Menzel, he is an elite talent although if he can't stay on the park, could be a massive bust at 5 or 6.

Harrison Marsh was a noticeable absentee for mine, any reason why?

Fair enough, thanks for that. He really does seem to have come from way back to be spoken about as potentially going in the first 15 in recent days. Most on here seemed to think he'd be going in the 40's+ until about a week ago, so he may be this year's big "bolter".

Every chance of that especially Rioli and I was running out of picks to put them in and I really did want to put them in particularly Rioli. It just so happened that I thought WC would be a good destination for both of them and you had two late third rounders.

Any thoughts on Sam Lowrie and/or Harry Marsh? Two players some of the knowledgable colts watchers on our board are keen for WC to select, not selected at all in your mock.
