I don't like saying this, but Narkle is done at Geelong.

Duncan, Mengola and O'Connor out last week, and he still can't crack a spot in the midfield.

Miers out but he can't get a spot as a small forward.

Doesn't even crack the team as a sub.

Holmes has clearly gone past him as a midfielder, and Stephens may have also. Stengle has jumped over him.

Evans get chosen as sub ahead of him. Higgins and Dalhaus still getting a game ahead of him. Close still getting a game ahead of him.

Only signed a 1 year contract at the end of last season.

He hasnt grabbed a game by the scruff of the neck yet has he? He's just insurance at this stage, unless they plan to give him a big block in a few weeks and rest Higgins.

Seems like it, but hey it was just round 1. 22 to go.

Was it just form that kept him out of contention last week or is he recovering from injury?

Yes. Last year v Collingwood at the MCG, I think. He and Parfitt teamed up beautifully

I am not sure if he is recovering from injury, haven't seen any reports indicating this to be the case. He was fit enough to play VFL, and they played Henry who was clearly underdone. If he was in our plans I think he would have played.

The same thing happened with Constable last year when we had a few mids out, he was our best performed mid in the VFL and he still couldn't get a game. We all know how that ended.

Narkle is clearly more talented than Constable, so it is a shame that this is how it is headed.

Narkle has talent but he needs to learn that football is played with and WITHOUT the ball.

During a game a player will have the ball for probably about 5% of the game which makes what you do without the ball in a lot of ways more important.

It is what makes Parfitt a far better player as he understands he needs to try with and without the ball.

There is a huge information asymmetry, in that we don't know his instructions are and we don't get access to the volume of footage that they do a club land.

The coaches probably cares less about the difference between getting 15 disposals and 22 disposal and a goal (we have plenty of others who do that) then the fans do. Fans can't see and CD can't quantify running patterns, how someone stays in the contest etc.

Another thing to bear in mind is he isn't competing with himself but rather the players ahead of him in the list.

Its a game of 22 v 22.

Don't reckon he gets a gig somewhere else as a DFA?
He could have gone to any of the other 17 AFL clubs for cheap last season - he was out of contract at Geelong, and while his manager reported up to 6 or so other clubs being interested in him, I don't recall one report in the media with even a hint of genuine interest from another club

Yes I am aware of that.

The hard part for him is getting into the side now...as I suspect the style we are using now would suit him more than anything he has played in at Geelong. It's a long year at Covid could change sides at the drop of sniffle and cough. If gets in and plays well who knows but basically I agree... its not a good sign that he is not in the best22.

The major difference in game style for me Saturday wasn't the willingness to play on but the manic desire in the first half to shutdown opposition space. The last few years we tended to sag off and or corral, Saturday guys were even rushing up to man the mark, you could see the pressure they were applying on the ball and the effort put into chasing. The knock on Narkle has always been that he is a good attacking option but defensively he jogs. Watch some of the Essendon mids in the 1st qtr Saturday to see what happens when you do that. Have a look at how hard Holmes works without the ball to understand why he is ahead of Narkle in the pecking order.

was an inside/clearance midfielder as a junior but does not look to have the skillset to translate into that role at the next level. When played more on the outside his disposals very rarely lead to a score. I have more concerns about the lack of impact on the game than the lack of defensive running

The lack of uncontested ball retention was what I noticed. The uncontested marks were way down. A willingness to drive the ball forward , risk possesion as long as we gained meterage. To me that style would suit Narkle better than what we had previous were focused holding possession. Id say we will know more after a few rounds.

You didnt think he did that in his 34 disposal game last year.

hard to grab a game when they only give you 55 percent game time.

He's been given just 30 games. I don't understand why he has to dominate games in order to secure a spot while old plodders can no-show game after game and continue to get selected. Surely we should be giving younger players time to develop in favour of keeping on those past their expiry dates who have no room to grow.

And Narkle has put in solid performances. Last year, against the Dockers (26D, 1G), Collingwood (25d), the Suns (34d, 2 Brownlow votes).

I think it was Leppitsch who stated its no longer individual performance these days but team strategy/structure that matters when assessing performance.

You play the structure or you don't play. Hence, I presume, the Constable's and Narkle's situations...I'm sure there are others across the AFL in the same boat.

Interesting no sign of Constable in the Gold Coast 22 for Round 1.

I hope Narkle gets a run soon.

EDIT: Constable is injured and likely out for a month
