My sense is we'll see Narkle go basically head-to-head against Parish tonight. Similar age midfielders, both out of contract. It's basically an audition.

Well, if we're to be honest, Parish starts that conversation a fair way in front, based on his performances this year. Would love to see Narkle have a massive game but Darcy has been exceptional for the Dons so far in 2021.

Agree. A good game for him to make a statement in though. Darcy has the runs on the board, but Narkle has something to prove and hasn't had the same opportunity.

Jonathan Simpkin won a flag at Hawthorn. But you're right. If Narkle were to leave he'd more than likely end up like Taylor Hunt, Dawson Simpson, Walker, Lang, Murdoch, and the myriad other players that left for 'more opportunity' rather than knuckle down and earn it.

Or end up like the players that stay and then get delisted in a year?

AFL is a fickle game. I, for one, wouldn't begrudge a player leaving for a guaranteed contract.

Fairly ordinary tonight. Looked hesitant again.

I reckon Charlie Constable deserves a go next week
I think it's just a function of him playing away from the contest for large parts of the game. Just not in his best position. Constable would be worse in that situation where he has to play on ball or not at all.

Jogs when his opponent has the ball. I’m just about done with him.

Stands out really badly, I agree. The Parish goal summed it up for me. Darcy just keeps competing and competing; Quinton can't even be bothered to get close to him throughout the whole passage of play. And the inevitable goal results. Class and will from Parish, and nothing special at all from Narkle.

And that's before you consider that he didn't even help us that much around the ball tonight in any case, despite spending almost all his minutes in the middle. Most other players in there were cleaner, and got more of the ball as well. Also generally used it better once they had it.

It's really not clear that he's being woefully treated at selection at all when you look at how he performed tonight. There's only so many inside mids in any team, and he is clearly not in our strongest group in there right now.

Looks to me like he's genuinely on the cusp of staying/going/missing out entirely at this point. You would expect to see more intent from him if he's truly playing for his future with us or others in a game like that one tonight.

Not sure who it was before the match that suggested a match up of Narkle vs Parish - well, we got to see that in the second quarter at a centre bounce

- Narkle went with the one hand and not sure he got a touch on the ball
- Parish then picks up the ball and runs away from the contests with Narkle trailing him, but didn't seem to have the urgency one would want to see

Not sure I saw the Narkle vs Parish contest at another centre bounce

happy to see him leave end of season. He is an ok player at being an inside contested possession player, but literally not good at anything else and adds no value outside of it.

if your going to be a pure contested ball winner, then you need to take your game to oli wine and Clayton Oliver or jobe Watson levels.. you can’t be just ordinary good 7/10 at one trick in modern AFL midfields and make the grade.

if narkle was a video game statistic I think he would look something like

contested possession: 7/10
Outside possession: 4/10
Defensive pressure: 2/10
Marking: 2/10
Speed: 7/10
tackling: 2/10
goal kicking sense: 1/10

just too poor in many areas of his game to be a top line midfielder for a top four club.
a lot he needs to add to his game

Yeah .. disappointing. I thought it might be Narkle's opportunity, with O'Connor out, to show what he's got against a player like Parish. Not to be, either the opportunity much or the grabbing of it.

this has been my point for a long time and ive been given large degrees of fecal matter for it...

maybe its deserved.. im just glad other people see it too.

If the defensive work rate matched the desire and execution going the other way..... the sky is the limit IMO.
Maybe he wants number 5 given he saw plenty of it chasing Parish around all night - granted, he was not alone there and Parish ripped all of them a new one.

GO Catters
