RIP Jan. Many a band (including many high energy punk bands) were big fans of Jan and Dean. Surf City is a bona fide classic.

Yeah I knew that one of the guys from The Who (I forget which one) was a HUGE fan and that's how the group ended up covering Jan & Dean's hits 'Barbara Ann' and 'Bucket T'. Someone also brought out a parody of Jan & Dean's hit 'Drag City' but apart from that I haven't heard too many other covers, anyone think of more?

And I also agree that 'Surf City' is an awesome song. Apparently Jan Berry asked Brian Wilson if they could have 'Surfin USA' instead and Brian refused.

Also meaning ,Lioness, that Brian gave away his first number #1!

Well he didn't give it to the Beach Boys is all. He didn't really give it away since he sang backup/lead vocals on the single!

I think it was a smart move, I don't think the Beach Boys would have had a hit with it, whereas 'Surfin USA' suits their style better. There's not even any guarantee that the Beach Boys would have recorded it as a single.
