But you weren’t judging it last night after round 13&14, you said after this round.

You’d also have to acknowledge there’s been a change in gameplan that has impacted our scoring.
Yeah look if we are judging it after this round this week it’s likely we rank #1

And of course we needed to adjust our game plan , we can’t keep conceding to teams like Essendon 100 + points , as the season gets deeper in winter and games become more defensive we’d lose far too many and definitely wouldn’t build a finals brand

There’s always a pendulum of balance , we likely a little bit defensive right here right now but that could change too

That so called "necessary change" hasn't achieved anything though.

First 5 rounds we had one match with a negative UP differential (-13 v North), post round 5 we have only had one game with a positive UP diff (+62 v Carlton). We are getting less clear ball on the outside which has resulted in scrappier ball movement, and in the process, teams are getting a higher amount of outside ball against us.

My original post, that you called rubbish, opined that our slower ball movement had resulted in a less effective avenue to RT, responding to a poster who made that observation. ALL the stats that have bn presented to you, plus a cursory look at our games since round 5, point to my opinion being at least plausible, hardly rubbish.

You've gone from "thats rubbish, why do we score so high blah blah fap fap" to "aww lets see in 4 weeks, maybe the sample size is too small, jeez I wish we played at Marvel more often, it would suit us". Yeah, maybe if we played Carlton more often it would help, because that would suit us too...

Talk about rubbish posting, yours is the absolute definition of that term.
And yet we will likely be no 1 ranked points for after this round and improved our defensive side of our game to bring some balance , most likely we’ve over done it a bit but the year isn’t over

You’re not taking into account a whole bunch of variables and that’s up to you

Keen to revisit in a few weeks and see if we are still top few in points for still

Also our points FOR off turnover is still clear league leading and that’s a decent indicator for recent success

Malcolm Blight would be (figuratively) punching you in the face for this post. Essendon scored 100 points waaahhh... we beat them by 10 goals. We owned the ball that game and didnt even feel the need to play Rankine after half time.

I'll call the rubbish truck.

A guy who coached a flag in 1998 ? Tell me some recent ones

The other point is do people really think Nicks has just pulled a lever and “overcorrected” us from best scoring team to 3rd best defense? Really? Because if he has that level of control over his AFL team then I think that would make him the most influential coach in history.
I think it's been initiated by the oppo coaches and we've not adapted properly, and even doubled down on it, because not playing to our advantages is a very crows thing to do.

Something like this:
  • Oppo coaches go "whoa, those crows have a gun forward line and kick lots of goals". So they put extras in defence, clog up the corridor with their forwards, turn it into a contested game, back their midfields to beat ours.
  • This has put the brakes on our scoring, and probably works well enough for them as we can't seem to beat good midfields very well. Port and Geelong smashed us for example. (Collingwood didn't, but we choked in Q3 and lost for other reasons.)
  • Instead of dealing with it, we seem to be leaning into it - we've got our own spare defenders and we kick long down the line to contests, looking to get another stoppage. We don't seem to be trying to switch play or run through the center square with handball chains.
I don't really get why we are doubling down on that unless we doubt our ability to not turn the ball over in dangerous parts of the ground. I guess we're so worried about doing that that we're prepared to play a congested contest and hope to win that way. Maybe we have super low opinions of Keane/Butts/Worrell/etc and don't think they can defend turnovers that happen a kick ahead of them. The whole thing seems like we're trying not to lose, rather than trying to win.

And it's even more weird, since half our bloody team is half back flankers who you'd back to make good, fast transition plays happen. If we're not doing that, then what are we doing?

Here’s something a bit more recent in terms of premiership teams , for mine collingwood is playing the best style of the 3 ( us , GC and them ) as they are hardest to score against but still punish off turnover

Note, he said net score differential. We are ranked fifth so far and going backwards. But yeah, that necessary change in game style right?

Keeping digging bro.

Not complaining at all , it was entertaining but that style of game isn’t going to get us anywhere medium term
Based on... net score differential? Fairly comfortable the Essendon game score line achieves that goal comfortably. What else ya got?

Actually, dont bother. We dont agree and never will. Just one last question - I would happily be wrong and we win a flag. Would you?

#1 ranked for scores FOR off turnover

It’s not a bad starting point

And if we didn’t work on defence we’d be much lower than 10th where we sit on scores AGAINST off turnover

But yep keep pretending we should jump from nowhere to the best in league at everything in half a season

You’re thinking very short term but that’s ok

Let’s revisit in a few weeks

Sample size etc
Thats not me talking, thats Champion Data - refuting everything you've said and supporting every observation Ive made.

But you do you bro. Over and out :thumbsu:

Normal people= Port are a shit side, when you get 4 goals up you don’t shut up shot with 13 mins on the clock and we were lucky to hold on

Nicks and you= shut up shot with 13 mins to go was a good move, ignore that played into Ports hands and worked against us, we held on for a win just, woohoo

It was more like 14 I thought? Some have said 10. Not sure. I would say 14 myself as Rankines soccer goal was with like 14:50 left from memory.

Finlayson kicked a reverse torpedo along the ground 40 metres, SPP kicked a ball which did an off break and went through for a goal, JHF kicked a goal off balance on a 10 degree angle after beating 3 Crows defenders. You don't run and gun against that sort of KOTD 5% chance crap, you shut it down.

Ryan Burton kicked a goal FFS, that bloke is useless.

Don't fooled by the Port that played Geelong. This side gets supercharged by Hinkley when he feels like it.

PS. I thought it was really early to shut it down too. Its the crazy responses to it which gets me, like Nicks is the biggest blunderer which ever coached a football side and Matthew Primus, Alan Richardson, Mark Neeld, Scott Watters and Brendan Bolton don't exist.

You said it was sound strategy, now you’re saying you didn’t agree with it.

That’s based on our high scoring from 1-3 and we’ve since changed our gameplan, we are going round in circles.

That 100 points to Essendon, a big chunk was in the last when the game was over.

If the rain is going to impact scoring for us, it would also for our opposition.
