Preview R11: Changes vs Eagles

I would like someone to present one piece of evidence - just one - which states that O'Brien isn't training, or whatever the latest conspiracy theory is around here. No hearsay, no half-remembered snippet, no link to an article about how he's studying (so is Billy Dowling - are we also doubting his commitment?) - actual evidence that he isn't training.

There are plenty of things to criticise about both ROB's performances and the club without resorting to misinformation.

As for changes, I'd really like to see debuts for Dowling and Zaylor in this next block of softer fixtures. I appreciate the club doesn't think the season is done, but we need to learn about the next generation rather than guys who we realistically know don't have what it takes.

That would make sense if you didn't pick our best forward yesterday to drop
I'm judging on more than 1 game.

We need to look to next year.

There’s a case to be made for Rachele as our best forward, 2 goals and 5 vs 2 tackles, not as good DE though.
After the ducking game I'm thrilled for this kid and how he has responded. He still has a long way to go (as most youngsters do) but his attack at the contest has improved dramatically. Good on him.

Instinctively smart footballers are like diamonds.

A big few weeks against what should be teams we can easily knock over.

The case for new blood is stronger than ever given the easier run of games and lack of quality from some existing players.

Ryan - bring this kid in to allow Hinge to play wing alongside Nankervis.
Play Smith off the bench with Laird and Jones on notice

Curtin - comes back in to play HF or Hinge role, play at HF if worried about having Ryan and Curtin in back half

Schoenberg - he looks ready and we need that HF midfielder

Dowling - would he be more ineffective than Laird...

Going out
Sholl, McHenry, Murphy, Rankine, Laird

Smith and Jones next in line

These changes is what a good coach would do

Nicks will be coaching to win games so expect minimal changes.
The bloke wouldn't know how to develop youngsters.

He may as well not train with the way he plays.

The absolute irony is lost on Nicks though. If he played the younger guys while dropping the veteran spuds he would be winning.
How he and the other selection members don’t see this is sad and depressing.

The problem isn't Murphy or McHenry or ROB or an ageing Smith or a slightly built Sholl or Butts' poor footskills or a slowing down Laird or a handball happy Crouch or Keays' decision making or Himmelberg's Himmelberging.

You'd find similar players at the bottom end of every club's 22.

The problem is the collective. We're trying to cover off so many little weak points and there's only so much Dawson, Rankine and Tex can do.

Players 20-22 in every team are no world beaters but unfortunately our 20-22 standard players make up about a third of the team.

Who on our list is capable of being part of the "proper" core of decent footballers? They must be prioritised. Even if they still get played at SANFL level the team needs to be structured around what is best for their individual development.

Maybe he should follow the Blight book. Combine youth and experience

You know it, I know it, most on here (except the usual club simps) know it, but it won't happen.

The next three games will all be used to play these guys back into form.

I guarantee we will see a Laird appreciation post on the club's socials after he racks up 35 touches against the Eagles, while Dowling is left to rot in the SANFL.

Likewise Smith, while Curtin and Ryan are stuck copping abuse from the deadshits at Unley Oval.

The worst bit is that we don't even bother making it look like we are trying to improve on those types. They're valued as core pieces in a premiership 23 whereas the kids that aren't getting opportunities would deliver no less and quite possibly more.

Honestly, that's absolutely pathetic. But then unsurprising, we're run more as a public service department than a footy club.
There's no evidence whatsoever that he's training less. Plenty of players study while playing AFL.

From yesterdays game

Core (for 2024):

Dawson
Rankine
Rachele
Soligo
Hinge
Fogarty
Michalanney
Nankervis
Crouch
Walker
Laird - in defense
Butts
Cook - at least for this year
Hamill - at least for this year
Keane - until Murray is back
Himmelberg - I don't think he's AFL standard. Bring in Strachan and play him as the second ruck.

No Good:

Jones
O'Brien - surely we need to have a decent look at Strachan at some stage
Keays
McHenry
Murphy
Smith
Sholl
