Cleary getting 12 disposals in her first game was pretty good to see and part of the good from today. The bad is missing Ellie and placing faith in Bacon in the midfield, just the 8 disposals there and not the answer.
Clearly Cleary was a good hitout. The best thing was how more composed she became through the game. A few suspect kicks, but that will get more consistent as she gains even more composure.

You gotta feel for Bacon. Skillful, but her inexperience shows. Not her fault. She will be a chance for the midfield in time, getting runs in there matters. Grieves' shoulder probably caused her to have another role today. She crossed the line, played hard still.

:100: Bacon will end up being a versatile player for us I reckon, she's added goal kicking, and is already a starting defender in that line, her best suited line. This is why we need a VFLW side/partnership as she can play in the VFLW to hone her midfield craft as she's not a natural. Grieves is a natural mid and agree she was clearly affected by her shoulder as was only going in right sided favouring one arm to her tackles. She only had 1/2 the usual amount of disposals and tackles and attended no centre bounces, had less time on the ground signalling she was there on restricted time only.

Reckon milzy just about played last game ,has had an awful year, has she even kicked a goal
She's having a stinker. For this year stat wise this is her worst year for tackles, her highest number of frees against, and she only has the 2 goals this year compared to last year's 11.

Not everything she is doing is down though, she's up in possessions, contested and uncontested, in intercepts, in marks and contested marks.

It's obvious that she is trying out there, maybe trying too hard and she needs to calm down her brain a bit at times.

To my eye she doesn't seem to have the time and space that she used to and that's affecting her offensive and defensive game and her ability to execute around goal, and also her ability to apply pressure inside 50 as the game is a more uncontested game generally. She is trying to impact elsewhere where she can like getting involved in chains more.

I don't think it's about her effort or that she is not invested. Question is, is this season a one off forget it and move on year, or is she now going to tread water until she's overtaken by others. Maybe she needs a fresh start, a different system that plays to her strengths, maybe at another club where she can get back to being that dangerous small forward.

After round 11 we have played 44 quarters. In those we scored 0 goals 17 times (38.64%) or 1 or 0 goals 32 times (72.73%) and more than 2 goals 2 times (4.55%), both times 4 versus Adelaide and Collingwood.

Quite fumbly today, giving it to outnumbers, not what we had come to expect from her.

Dempsey has never been a super clean one touch player. Ok if she has time and space but shut that down and she can really struggle. I think that's a big difference this year for most of our players. Look ok against poor sides but as soon as we hit a mid table side and above we are rushed, make poor decisions and turn it over.

I was watching the Brisbane v Melbourne game. Fiercely contested with over 150 tackles. We are a long way away from that type of footy.

Watched it as well. It was a whole other game compared to our game Saturday. We have very little intensity.

I'm pretty bullish with Issy. I think she'll turn into a pretty good player. Comments about her in her draft year were that she had come from a background of different sports and consequently her decision making was something that needed improving. It will come with more experience. The positives were that her strengths were the ones that are hard to teach and we saw a glimpse of them in the first 30 seconds of the game.

Broken record I know but how much better would Cleary have been finishing the season with half a dozen games under her belt instead of two. To me it was the total wrong call to hold her back so long. 40 other Irish players smashing it throughout the league are a testament to that.

Had a quiet year too demps likely consider her future I’d say

As have some others, only players > 21yo who have gone up a level this year IMO are Beth Lynch, Libby Graham, Ally Dallaway and Charl Wicksteed. Dallaway now not just a defensive inside mid, she's showing she has a good outside game as well. It's taken a few years but Graham, as a former soccer player, has finally worked the game out. Lynch delisted by North in 2021 has improved every year since we picked her up, and Charli Wicksteed has come on in leaps and bounds this year as a 3rd year player who's only 22yo.

(late addition)
Oh yeah and Ellie McKenzie, I somehow forgot her, but she is in that rare air of being good enough to be in All Australian consideration again.

With Ellie out of the game, they just sat on Mon & gave her no room, yet she showed why she is one of the best in the league. Outside of Mon there was nobody that stood out in the middle. Egan got a bit of it, but she is a panic merchant & continues to turn the ball over. Lynchy's attack on the ball is good, still need to work on her disposal. I thought Bacon started well, but fell away as the game went on. Feel for Grieves as she is stuck in no mans land, as she has shown to have Mon like traits, but not getting into the midfield to show her wares. Kelly battled well against the best ruck in the league & if only Greiser realised to use her size to advantage, as she shows glimpses only to go back into her shell. Final note, Cleary for her debuted was more than serviceable & will learn with experience.

My eyes might have failed me but I thought it was Egan's best game in quite a while. Yes the bar hasn't been high but definitely a step in the right direction. She does panic in traffic but less so this game and that's also about others helping.

When it comes to turnovers, these are part of the game. Especially in AFLW. The problem is that when we turn it over we are not great at getting the ball back and teams really hurt us. It has been particularly so this season.

When they turn it over we fail to make them pay.

Freo's best mids against us:

McCarthy - turned it over 5 times
Newton - turned it over 5 times
Bowers - turned it over 5 times

Egan 6.
