Some big calls this year - an incredible injection of youth, and some previously 'undroppable' players finally laying in the bed they've made.

Can mac has some tough lessons to learn, as did Ballantyne. Don't get caught up with the latter's selection as softness, there's a bit more to it than that.

There really isn't much selection stability in this rebuild. So many changes from week to week, and then they're often back in/out the following week.

What

So many changes from week to week, and then they're often back in/out the following week.

Again, what.

This isn't a bad thing. This post actually applies to just one player (Ballantyne) and not the overall selection process throughout the year like you're making it out to be. Ballantyne & Matera come in so that Giro, Apeness and Jones can stay in and the other young players can continue to get minutes whilst staying competitive.

The correlation with McCarthy playing well/ok and having Tabs as the focal point I think is undeniable, and he’s proven he can’t get near it playing on then best defender.

He was trash again last week, but what annoys me is surely you’d give him another run with a developing Apeness to create the same release for him? We know where Ballantyne is heading, we desperately need to find out with McCarthy. I’m really pissed off.

How in the world is an unsettled side not a bad thing?

If Ballantyne and Matera were judged not good enough to make the team last week (Matera wrongly in the first place imo) how in the world do we now think they are worthy after a single WAFL game?

Because they're the best available for a suspended player and a player who has been absolutely putrid and is finally being sent back to Peel. They also compensate in experience and leadership lost. Which means we can afford to expose and give last weeks Ins an extended run. How is that hard to understand?

The changes could of actually been a lot worse to better suit your wonky perception.

McCarthy needs to be dropped, his long-term success is far more important.

Our forward line has featured low efficiency and is structurally negligible.

We have one tall coming out for one small and one small/medium forward. The weather will also be shit.

Love or loathe Ballantyne the structure makes tactical sense.

Because they have to carry more of the load each week?
At least the ' it's the surface at Freo oval, can't wait to move to Cockburn' crowd have shut up
Why do we always get to this stage of the year and have injuries to key players. Sandi, Fyfe, Neale, A Pearce, 2 Hills, Walters. The only guys who are fringe best 22 - Ballas, D Pearce, Sheridan ect - are running around fit as a fiddle.

What young players would you have brought in to replace Fyfe and Cam?

I just don't see the point in playing Ballantyne. He won't be at the club next year. Performed poorly all year. He hasn't played well since that JLT game where the opposition didn't try.

You don't get experience into young players unless you actually play them.

Which begs the question - which youngster is Ballantyne currently keeping out of the team?

Never thought I'd see McCarthy get dropped.

Hopefully he can figure out the basics in Peel again.
If only Peel had a midfield atm I think it'd be great to see what McCarthy and Dixon could do together this weekend alongside a ruck/forward in Meek or Strnadica. West Perth and South Freo in the next two games (before the bye) will make it tough to get enough supply. What has happened to Tom North? Was hoping him, Howlett and Crowden would be in the middle for Peel but it's like he's disappeared altogether (not on injury list, not on Peel list). Good to see Sutty finally back from concussion though.

I reckon there will be a late change if the weather turns nasty. Jones out for Nyhuis

I'd at least make sure Logue is playing.

Need to get games into him. Stick Kersten up forward if you must play him.

Personally, I don't think Logue will make it and was a big mistake to burn our first round pick on him.

But, we need to play him to see if he can sink or swim.

We're doubling down on youth afterall.

McCarthy / Dixon together might be a good glimpse at the future. I think McCarthy should just run around and do whatever to get his confidence levels back, also play some football without any pressure. I'm critical on him but my doubts in regards to him doesn't have to do with what he does or how he copes in a forward system - we've seen his capabilities, I just get annoyed at the consistency of his individual basic football skills.

Also what happened to Sutcliffe before when he returned to Peel? Sounded like from what I read he played a bit, then disappeared again and is now back.

FFS give the kid some time.

Why don’t you go and post in the Melt thread and leave the discussion threads to “real” supporters

Almost certain it's due to his concussion. Sounded like it knocked him about a bit - great news he's ok. Certainly some players I don't wish in Freo's B22 but hate seeing them injured (especially head injuries) no matter who they are.
