Smith was the closest one and easily within range to put a body on Newcombe, and didn't.

But yeah Berry was absolutely the wrong person to go the spoil. He actually had a pretty reasonable night to that point.
What? Can you go and look at the vision? Smith is a paddock away. He gets there at the end (albeit limply) but to suggest he is 'easily in range' rather than the bus load of tourists watching that was our players around the pack is nothing short of a fantasy and defies common sense and reason.

He barely made an effort, he pretty well stood there until it was too late.

If you dont expect a senior player, the 2nd most experienced player on the ground to do better, then thats on you

Not sure thats quite right, we had all the chances we needed to win the game and the players choked on the field

We had 2 more scoring shots than Hawthorn

If both sides had kicked straight it would have been a narrow victory. Luck in terms of accuracy still would have played a part.

Nicks gameplan stifled us of a volume of opportunities in the second half.

Only saw 20 mins or so in the third quarter (unfortunately watched the cricket - which is going about as well as we did). Every time we went forward our forward line was congested, clearly a plan by Mitchell. We could not buy a goal, and then when Hawthorn eventually got it out, they had one on one contests everywhere and were able to manufacture a couple of goals. Again outcoached, and our selections were ordinary - needed a bit more leg speed, and cleaner entries. Hopefully the bye has come at the best time, and we get back on track.

I wonder when our players have to take responsibility, or is it purely down to the coach ??

The players have to take responsibility for missing

The coach has to take responsibility for the gameplan generating a low number of largely poor quality shots

A lot of them weren't poor quality shots.

Nicks' biggest blunder of the night was leaving Tex on the field. You can argue that it could have cost us, but thats it.

Ok so you dont really want Berry to be the one putting up the fist to spoil. Hall of fame shit one. Great.

But if you go and freeze the vision from behind the goals whilst that ball is in the air after the punch from Berry you can see we don't have a single player trying to get to the back of the contest.

That punch from Berry hung in the air long enough to get players to the fall of it and/or getting behind it.

Instead everyone ball watches and they have an easy chain to goal.

Ok everyone might be cooked but I thought that illustrated poor leadership down back.

Where is our goalkeeper on the line?

Even before the ball kicked in by Jiath and it was falling short why did noone realise you've got everyone charging forward and we need to get someone falling back?

Of course this is all moot if Fog doesn't have a brainfade and punch it out.

We just dont have the onfield smarts or experience to read game situations like that last 5 mins and do the little things.
That was enough to make anyone tap out. Who'd have ever thought that a ball on a freezing, greasy night, would skip over the back of a contest towards goal from a long bomb?

Not ****ing anyone in a red guernsey that's for sure.

Stood where? On the other pocket? Yeah. We could ask him to get there. But I'm saying he had 8+ players who could've done something to avoid it getting out the back to begin with.

Smith was the break glass option in that scenario.

You are giving way more players a free pass when they had way more of a chance to impact.

Asking Smith to be the guy in that situation is like running a tap in a room on fire.

A number of our shots were dribblers along the ground and very tight kicks on a big angle. A couple of in play snaps from long range

We also handballed to ROB of all players for a snap, the Keays one which actually was a goal was a pure luck kick through a crowd, Dawson did similar but missed.

We took 3 marks inside 50 for the game

Hopefully whoever Davis reports to is that he tells them to get rid of that potato.
Everyone seemed to think Davis was going to come in and fix everything.

Well at the moment he's a flop. Unless his role is to observe, do **** all, and let Nicks make the exact same mistakes as last year.

We're picking the same duds that we know aren't up to it. We're pre-planning subs. We're carrying seniors that are liabilities.

And a response of "Well Nicks probably isn't listening" doesn't pass the pub test. Guy took big dollars to move down here but the coach isn't listening to him and no higher ups are stepping in?

His job is to observe the coach and make suggestions but he has finally had enough of looking after the petulant child that is Nicks and caused him to break last night in the coaches box.

Early in the year we were getting separation and our forwards were keeping separate, as the year has gone on we are more and more kicking to packs and everyone is flying for the same mark.
Don’t get me started with ROB clogging up an already clogged forward line either.

We play like we're sedated.

How many shots at goal from frees did the Hawks have? Not saying some of them weren’t there but I just can’t ever remember a game where we get so many shots at goal from frees.

Either our defenders need to tighten up or the umps need to be more consistent.

Stevic and Williamson is your answer. Also a little bit from column A and B.
