Harsh marker. Ive been a Muz fanboi since before it was popular. My biggest gripes with Butts have alway been his indecision with ball in hand, disposal and an inability to peel off on the rebound or offer anything other than pure lockdown playing deep. To my surprise hes shown massive improvement in all these areas since his return.

It's not harsh, just reality about a player that people are desperate to see do well (for whatever reason).

The thing is Butts hasn't offered any of that, outside of an outlier game against Hawthorn. Peel off and add to the rebound? Filtering for defenders who have played 5+ games, Butts has the lowest disposal count of any key defenders in the league, and his average of 6.6 disposals per game (note >= 75% game time for every game). We are getting 2.1 rebound 50s (which is bottom 13 for key defenders) and Butts is around average for disposals per turnovers, but as said, kicking stats show this is mainly due to kicking to contests and areas where the ball can be killed.

Butts isn't offering anything other than lockdown play. In that part, he's done alright.

Keeps it up and it will be hard to view it so much as either/or for Murray, but I understand that matters not until we show a bit more flexibiliy in selection. and stop wedding ourselves to structure.

It's always going to be an either/or as Mark Keane and Josh Worrell exist, and we don't want multiple pure shutdown key defenders.

Structure and system are everything in professional football. We're wedded to it because we're ****ed if we're not. It's part of why teams who can intercept well and tend to restrict scoring go deep and teams who rely on talent to do the heavy lifting get found out.

Be nice if we rewarded form as well. Has Murray shown the form required to be considered a like for like replacement of an in form Butts yet? If not, why bother?

It would also be nice if I was Santa Claus. System needs trumps all, and in the end of the day, just having an upgrade in player quality opens a lot more options with your system as even small differences in player quality tends to snowball when a system adapts to the better footballer.

I literally just showed you that Murray had a career which is better than the level Butts hits when he's in "good form". There is a reason why we moved away from Butts in our defensive system, he's not good enough.

We retained Butts by the sound of it, which is a missed opportunity to readjust our structure to having a better player.

What utter tripe, first you double down, now you triple down, Borlase is SANFL level depth, Butts is AFL depth with us but wouldn't be at other AFL clubs.....Borlase would be 2nd level depth everywhere.
