I think that this is really telling for the direction of the club with these inclusions, us not defaulting automatically back to experienced players.
This has to be the inclusion of Davis and Balme into the selection committee, I have no doubt Nicks would've fought hard over the last couple of weeks to bring in Murphy and Smith as known quantities, however you would think he has either conceded or the others have put the foot down in having Taylor starting on the field, Pedlar, Nank & Bond in the squad surely now shows that they have moved past those two (Murphy & Smith).

They're both out of contract and were given multiple chances to cement a spot and earn a new contract and I am hoping that its all now done. Thanks both for your service, all the best.
Balme is on the selection panel?

There appears to be four spots up for grabs. Berry, Taylor, Jones and ????.

Rachele will hopefully come back and take one of these spots. The other contenders, based on previous selections, include Pedlar, Nankervis, Smith, Sholl, Draper, Crouch, Murphy and Cook. We are yet to see Bond, Edwards and Dowling in the AFL this season and it seems like Schoenberg, Ryan, Gallagher, Welsh and T Murray are a long way from selection.

Burgess, Butts, Borlase and McAndrew are a chance if we need a like for like replacement.

Since none of the fringe players that I have mentioned have nailed down a spot, I would like to see Bond, Edwards and Dowling given a chance over the last 7 games but I doubt this will happen.
Berry is pretty bloody safe in the 22 I think.

Doing very well this year. He's probably the one who is not so safe if we somehow recruit a big name midfielder (Oliver, lols) but right now he's fine.

Some pretty disgusting posts on GC board about our club, call us a racist club, that Mac Andrew will be racially vilified this week.
Weird. I like Mac Andrew, I think he's good for the game.

I also hope Filthy kicks 10 on him, cos he deserves it given the last game.

Don't see why it has to go further than that.

I don’t think it’s a matter of Crouch being a game changer, I just think he does Berry’s position better than Berry does. It’s those small things which add up over the entirety of the game that can make the difference. Was it last year or the year before when Crouch was pretty much playing SANFL and made an immediate impact when he got his chance in AFL. I think you are taking for granted the advantage of first touch and clearances from centre bounces are. Yeah rebounding footy has become a dangerous weapon for us, but first crack into our forward 50 surely has to be as important.

It is the quality of the clearance, not the clearance itself. Hacked kicks around the body or bombs out to the half forward flank are a defenders dream, it means the mids have put enough pressure on the ball carrier to affect disposal. Players running in a straight line towards 50 are a nightmare for the defenders as they can hit a lead up target or kick it in deep to a one on one.

When Matt did well (for clearances) in 2023, we played the inside set at a clearance. We halved the ruck contest and then Matt could do a dinky one two and sell players into trouble. There is no ability to play ahead when we do that, we have to wait, can Matt extract it, will it just be a ball up after he is tackled, will we get a hacked kick away under pressure as every one is flat footed.

When we play the outside set at a clearance, we can defend against an extractor and we can see when we have the advantage if it comes to the outside and run ahead of the ball to give the option to have a player run ahead of the ball, get it and run straight at the 50.

I am staggered when I read "Berry doesn't get many tackles, it was his one wood". No shit he doesn't, we are playing a different style of game and maybe people might notice it in 18 months time but it's been happening for weeks now. If Berry is getting a ton of tackles, it means he is second to the ball...all the time. Last week, Tom Mitchell got a game high 11 tackles and 20 possies ( nearly all handballs ) and he was a major reason GC got out as far as they did. Miller stoood 2 metres off him in the first half and any time they won the ball, it was kick it to Touk because Tom ain't catching him. If Miller hadn't got injured, that game was over before the 10 minute mark of the third.

Berry is a better option than Matt, he can chase and put pressure on, he can kick goals and he complements the current set up that now has us 12-5 far better than Matt will.

I would love to see Berry cement his spot.

Compared to other inside midfielders he is rated below average for 5 of the 7 traits and average for tackles and clearances. Our other inside mids (Dawson, Rankine, Soligo and Peatling) are way, way in front of him. Even playing injured Crouch was rated much higher.

I do not believe the stats are the best way of evaluating players but they do give some indication. Dawson and Rankine are rated above average/elite midfielders, Soligo and Peatling are rated average/above average midfielders, Berry is rated below average.

Well yeah, I think he's probably got the least time in there as well, compared to all the other guys.

And the last few games we've had him tagging/semi tagging the oppo best midfielder for chunks of the game too.

Berry's ability to move quickly out of contests, effectively tag and also hit the scoreboard occasionally mean that his stats are somewhat underrepresenting his impact this year compared to the alternatives I think.

Certainly not an absolute lock though, he'd be the first mid to go if Crouch or Draper demanded selection.

Gee they are a sad little bunch of the GC board, fearful of racism and abuse.. WTAF

Anyone would think they are attending an away game in Belgrade or Rome FFS...

Pretty simple really Andrew will get booed and it's cause he's a twat. Nothing to do with skin colour.

I can imagine that MM could go forward onto Rioli to help curb his influence.

In that case Nank might come in to half back and replace Taylor in the side.

Nank can also be swung forward in case things go a bit wobbly with the Rioli matchup.

But where does that leave Pedlar, he should be playing because Nicks sung his praises during the week.

Can laird be rested? lol.

Lol Gold Coast.

You finally manage to scrape together a half-decent season after being a glorified training drill for the past decade, and suddenly every fair-weather parasite with a sunburn thinks they’ve earned the right to gloat. Where were you all when the team was a national punchline? Oh right—nowhere. Crawl back under your bandwagon until you've actually achieved something worth bragging about.

Keays or ANB will cool Rioli.

I like to check out the match ups when I watch a replay of each match. The closest we had to a tag was Zac Taylor on Bailey Dale. Berry spent time on all three of the Bulldogs top inside mids. More Bont in the first half, Libba in the second half, although he also matched up on Richards from time to time.

We rarely match up our inside mids on a specific player, we do seem to be more focussed on making the opposition mids more accountable this year. Nevertheless, some of the opposition’s top mids have had big games on us this year. The Bont was exceptional last week; 37 disposals, 8 clearances, 12 tackles and 6 goal assists.

Hopefully we can keep a lid on Anderson and Rowell on Sunday.

Suggest you think twice before posting.. as tempting as it is

Believe me if we win I think a few of our posters will cop a ban for trolling the **** out of them though
