I hate knocking any of our players but Daniel and Sutty have reached their used by date. Terrible balls up by the selectors to play them It was always going to end in tears.

I was hating both of these players way back, very early. Their turnovers from bad decision making has often resulted in opposition goals.
I then found reasons to defend them in an attempt to try to understand what Ross saw in them.
D.Pearce gave us valuable i50s when we desperately needed them.

But, the number of times I see both of these players (mostly D.Pearce), avoid a contest, attacking the ball or ball carrier and choosing to instead spectate and stay on their man, it really does my head in.
Watts first goal on the weekend had D.Pearce standing still about 5metres in front of Watts, just watching while Watts gathered the loose ball and hooked the goal. Now, I used to turn a blind eye to that sort of thing when D.Pearce was getting 20+ possessions and averaging 5 inside50s a game, but his numbers since 2016 have been way down and his defensive game is shocking. He's got to go.

Sutcliffe, strangely enough, I think is playing better football now than he was in 2015. But it doesn't mean I like him. He is still capable of turnovers and bad decisions and the opposition seem to be able to avoid his tackles way too easily, but at least he now gets a bit of the footy and shows some desperation and effort (eg. his sprint and dive on the goal line to prevent a goal on the weekend).
I'd still prefer to have any one of Hamling, Spurr, Hughes or Logue playing instead of Sutcliffe.

Essendon play a very mobile tall forward line of Stewart, Daniher and Hooker, supplemented by Green, Tippa, Devon Smith etc.

All three of those talls will make Johnson look like a clown shoes for mobility.

Pearce and Hamling must take Hooker and Daniher.
STewart would be perfect for Logue, but maybe Hughes can fill that hole?

Out: Pearce, Sutcliffe
In: Anyone not named D Pearce or Sutcliffe and especially not Sheridan.

According to stats, Ballantyne was worst on ground for Fremantle. I watched the game and I can't think of any obvious errors in that assessment. Was certainly the worst small forward.

Stats are stats, but on the day, Ballas was poop, B. Hill was running poop.

I'm not going to drop B. Hill, but Ballas was head of D Pearce & Hill.

In.

Hamling, S. Hill.

Out.

S & P

Through selection, injury or preparation we were missing 5-7 players who I’d have in our best 22 from S.Hill, Hamling, Logue, Hughes, Darcy/Cox, Cerra and Bennell

That’s not insignificant for a team rebuilding against good opposition especially when our best are having off days.

We need to replace Kersten with a genuine Ruck/Fwd ie . We lose too much up forward and in the middle when we move Taberner out.

I also think Blakely needs to be played in the midfield. He brings intensity around the stoppages and is good at breaking away to release on the outside. If Fyfe is getting the attention Blakely could come to the fore. Mundy always starts slow.

I’d like to see Ballantyne out for Cerra Or Crowden to allow Walters and Fyfe to play more forward but the concenus seems to be that they need more time.

For this week then:
Out -> In
D.Pearce -> S.Hill
Sutcliffe -> Hughes
Johnson -> Hamling
Kersten -> Darcy/Cox

I didn't think Sutcliffe had a bad game. Didn't do anything wrong IMO. I guess his problem is he didn't do anything right either.

D Pearce I have to admit has probably played his last game. As much as I love the lols here when he does get selected, Out: D Pearce

As Shakespeare once said: “What price payeth ye for the likelihood of Sheridan’s recall; and what melteth know thy board after such inclusion, when such inclusion can only haveth one result.”

I don't see Hughes playing unfortunately, given he only played one game at Peel and then was travelling emergency i would think he will need an additional run.
Hamling is surely a lock (not at MJs expense though) and if fit which it seems he is likely in i would expect to see Hill come in.

In: Hamling, Hill
Out: Pearce, Sutcliffe

I would love to see Cox come in for Kersten too but i think RTB was pretty positive post match so cant imagine he will make 3 changes.

Ah yes. From Twelfth Melt isn't it?

MJ is done. What was he thinking
If Freo are in for a similar year like last year where we will probably get 7-9 wins this year, Go full tilt at the youth.

Might as well play Logue, Cox or Hamling now. I would only play Johnson again if every key defender is injured. No disrespect to Johnson, his skills are still there but his body has taken a battering playing for freo for the last 14 years.

Did I just step into a time machine and go back one year? It’s ironic we’re talking about the same spuds getting a game over the kids. Didn’t we learn last season playing the kids gives the team more enthusiasm and the fans something to be excited about?

Hopefully Ross and the MC have the sense to call time on MJ and D Pearce’s careers and let Ballas and Sutty know they’ll be at Peel unless there’s a plethora of injuries to the young kids.
I think this is a repeat of last year. I think Ross Lyon will give the old guys one more go. If they get belted again, Ross Lyon will have a gun to his head and be forced to play youth from round 3 onwards. Just like he did last year when we got belted by Port by 89 points. 6 days later we beat the dogs after we turfed Griffen, Dawson and Danyle pearce out and Logue and Balic came in.

I will await Thursday on the selection table. If we choose the old guys again, expect Essendon to belt us by 40-60 points.

Out: MJ (not gonna happen), DP (might happen), Sutty (probs won't happen, but might)
In: Hamling, Hughes, Duman

Let Hilly have a week in the WAFL.

What I think will happen:
Out: DP, Sutty
In: Hamling, Hughes

Essendon somehow isolating MJ on Daniher is enough to endure the worst nightmares. Can you imagine??

He would easily kick 10 on him, no contest

He could kick ten on Alex Rance if our midfield gets dominated.

20 on Johnson then.

POTM. Cracked me up and made me look like an idiot during a dinner. God bless.

Anyone would have a great day on Johnson.

Jeebus calm the **** down the lot of you.

If Any of you think Freo are stupid enough to Let Daniher go one on one with an broken and beaten down MJ, you are all sadly mistaken. People forget in the Port game. Dixon was held to one goal despite Ports dominance. Who did that good shut down job on him? I will give you a clue. He wears number 25 for us and played his 1st real AFL game for the 1st time in 2 years....

Its this bloke....

Insanity: doing the same thing, over and over again, expecting different results.

No - everyone doesn't give effort, and here's a shock it is not the sole determinant of a player getting selected.

If you're going to pick your team off stats alone, let's just hire the next Supercoach winner as chairman of selectors and save ourselves a lot of grief.

We all see games differently, to me it was a shit day to be a small forward - I preferred Matera and Walter's games ...however when I look at where we sucked most ...Balla avoids this listing (caveat of not by much).

I'd rather waltz Hamling and Darcy in for MJ & Kersten ....Hamling because he is better and Darcy for development. If S Hill is fit, D Pearce or Balla would be in the gun.
Shane Kersten... Everyone is going to have an opinion on him, just like tabs

Dixon kicked 1.3
If it wasn't for accuracy he could have bagged 4 goals aswell. No defender can cope when the midfield isn't working hard defensively. I thought A Pearce did the best you could expect.

Hooker is just as dangerous right now and I think he would ragdoll Johnson if he was forced into a 1v1.

Bring on the future... A Pearce/Hamling.

If I was the selection committee

Ryan - Hamling - Cox
Wilson - PearceA - Nyhuis
Shill - Blakely - Bhill
Walters - MCarthy - Banfield
Matera - Taberner - Mundy

Sandilands - Fyfe - Neale

Brayshaw - Tucker - Cerra - Darcy

  1. I think Mundy needs to come out of the midfield and become a semi-permanent third tall. He is a good kick, as good as Kersten.
  2. Play Blakely and Tucker as mids.
  3. Stick McCarthy and Tabs at CHF and FF respectively. Dont have them meandering up the ground.
  4. Cox for Johhno. Essendon will have Daniher, Hooker and Stewart up forward. MJ cannot keep up with any of them.
  5. Get Nyhuis to lock down of McDonald-Tipunguwi.
  6. Play the second ruck. Darcy is quite mobile and provides tackling pressure. We were pushed around by Port on Saturday.
  7. Play Cerra. Kid is too good for WAFL.

Of course I am dreaming here.

Drop balla suttcliffe bhill put the players on notice, yeh shit just got real mother ****ers.

Logue and Hamling are only not playing because they aren't fit or underdone for Round 1.

Cox needs to work on things from all accounts.

Johnson was playing because he's next man up. Hughes was also not available.

Wally my mate, we are only 1 game in and theres 21 to go. If we were doing the same thing then Zac Dawson would of played all 22 games last year. We have chopped and changed the forward line last year more time than you have changed tv channels mate.

I am alone on this... Just sit back and enjoy the rebuild.

And Dixons only goal was a dodgy free kick

Mundy, McCarthy and Banfield are all too similar to all be playing forward together imo. I'd also be concerned about Mundy's defensive pressure.

Also I think you're too tall with Hamling, Cox, AP, Darcy, Tabs, Sandi all in the one side.

Like the Nyhuis and Cerra thinking though.

I am alone on this...
No.
And Dixons only goal was a dodgy free kick
I remember Dixon goaled on the end of a hand ball chain after Brayshaw had kicked to the wrong option inside 50.Ballantyne was free, but the ball went to someone else, on their head, was spoiled, speedy counter Dixon lead straight up the guts and had it delivered onto his chest 35 out straight in front.Moose no chance.
I remember the commentary team saying "That just about sums up the difference between the two teams right there."

Hughes was also not available.
Hughes was travelling emergency so they want him in even though his form hasn't been great is my read on it??
Cerra is a no brainer in a month or whatever it is, along with Crowden has been anointed by the Boss. The one I'm really hopeful about is Tom North.
If he gets up to speed and gets a half dozen games this season it will address yet another specific need.
Fingers crossed.
Cerra has backed him in and he had a great start with Peel with big numbers and a bit of style from memory.

Cerra and Blakely in the guts. Nyhuis and Hamling as defenders. Danyle and MJ to come out.
I would put in Cerra for Ballas and let him have a go in the forward pocket like Sydney does with their first year stars. Hamling in for Danyle and put Blakely in the middle with MJ playing the loose role he has been so good at. But we know nothing will change for R2 so this is for R3 when the pitchforks are out.

I do remember Back in 2016 when everything turn to crap in the 1st 10 rounds, Guys like Weller and Langdon were rotated from the bench to the forward flank to the wing
