AFL Autopsy R2: Crows eviscerate us

McKay is the worst big recruit in recent memory. Seen enough of Hobbs to know he isn't worth persisting with. Menzie still one of the worst footballers in recent memory. I love how all summer the big question was our forward line, meanwhile our backline was just quietly working away like "none of them know we will be the real problem!"

I copped a lot of shit for saying McKay was a bad get.

It's all there in his trade thread.

At every junction Essendon makes the wrong decision.

We were swarming numbers to contested situations at a ratio of 3 to 2 and the Crows still steamrolled us, holding width outside the contest to stroll through what ever counts for our ground defence.
It just doesn't stop - been driving us supporters nuts for years. Do you think this is a coaching thing or the players we have just cant learn it?? It is something we should have been solely focused on for the first several weeks of pre season. Notice the really good teams, opposition players with ball are either being tackled or about to be tackled. With us they have spares everywhere.

The over-handballing to players in worse off positions and the rush to do this is reminiscent of the late Knights era.

Concerning how our senior players were just brushed aside like crumbs.

I love how Kako has the nous to release a handball and dish off at just the right moment, taking an extra second or so to dispose of the ball just opens up opportunities that weren't always there. That game sense that isnt easily taught, going to have his ups and downs but what a gem he's been so far.

Overreactions galore.
Fielding the youngest 22 this week.
Blind sally could see we were undersized forward and back.
Would have had to completely dominate the midfield and be very efficient going forward to have any chance.

stringer going has hurt us, especially more now we have Langford out for 6.

Ridley out with concussion, meant we were without our best user and most composed defender.

Our skill level is pretty bad. I actually think our handballing could be worse than the kicking. The amount of handballs that missed team mates or even stopped their momentum really frustrated me. Our kicking especially across half back was horrible and predictable, and when we got it into our forward line is was high to skinny forwards.

Our effort is there though, and I didn’t feel like we completely gave up the game.

Team defence gets spoken about a lot but it’s really hard to defend after poor turn overs.

If we have better disposal efficiency I bet our team defence looks a whole lot better.
It wasn't the young players that we're melting about.

McGrath, Shiel, McKay, Prior. They're not young.

Not enough spacial awareness around the contest. See ball get ball. Two trying to tackle one oppo. It can be taught but some players just don’t get it.

Most of ours don't.

Saw it straight away against Hawks last week, and in one instance several players went to tackle one guy early on and somehow it still got out

I'm personally glad we're shit. Makes turning the list over easier. Just gotta keep our picks, avoid sugar hits like Reid, and we'll be set.

Bottom four, here we come!!!

this approach is what is going to get me through this year..

We have never properly bottomed out, our 3 lowest draft picks sans the 2016 top up year (thanks Andy Mac) are Tsatas (2022) and then have to date back to 2015 with Parish (pick 5) and Francis (pick 6) and prior to that, Michael Hurley (pick 5 in 2008)

pick 10 - 14 and never once got a superstar

That's when I stopped watching today. Start of Q2, on the boundary both our guys went to tackle the Crows player who waited for them to come in and then handballed over the top of both to his spare team mate. Devastatingly simple and not even requiring any skill other than timing and the opposing team's lack of awareness

At what point do we start rattling the tin and ask for extra picks. We've been ****ed for 20 ****ing years and the afl offer us nothing
They are going to lose million of dollars as Essendon supporters stop joining and just so watching AFL full stop

My only AFL is reading big footy. The rest had been sucked out of me

probably the time when we actually do a re-build?

Another reason we should not re-sign Draper unless we are certain he won’t net a first round compo pick. Two top 5 picks + Melb first would be a huge haul.

A fair chunk of uncontested marks were forwards leading up at the ball inside 50 with our backman trailing 3 metres behind.
That was so frustrating. Again and again, simply allowing the opponent to stand in front, sometimes a metre or more, to be led to the ball. I don't even play footy and even I could see they needed to check more tightly. Ben Jacobs, wtf?

Did this convincing happen during the process?

How far removed from the game did Brad Scott have to be go believe this, why didn't he ask his brother, now that the dust has settled and Brad has fully committed to this list why on God's green earth would we trust the judgement of that same person?
At the end of the day they sold him a vision of a list that needed development and the likes of Perkins and Cox and Reid would be good players. If he asked his brother then he would have told him Parish was a decent player as despite them not offering 6 years at $800k they where interested in him for a few less years and about$100k less. Barham was also in that boat as far as the list and Dodoro goes. Scott did not have to be that removed from the game. A lot of AFL people and media people would have told him we have some tallant . It is just they are under performing.
Anyway Rosa and Vozzo have control of it now not that is any consolation for where we are at.
