It's still an assessment of the best players, not the team's performance.

Any assessment of best players that ignores the influence their performance has on the result is not worth the time and effort to undertake it. That's part of being the best players on the ground, you had to make a substantial contribution to the end result.

For as good as it looks on the stat sheet, you could subtract Zac Merritt out of that game and it does not change a thing result wise. Essendon still get humiliated, and Adelaide still runs up a defendable T20 total.

Would Nankervis be next in for quite a few of our defenders?

If Worrell, Hinge or Michalanney missed a game that's a pretty straightforward swap but would he also come in for Murray & Keane? With us getting players to play a bit taller.

Then perhaps not in for Milera or Laird as we seemingly want some more runner/ball winner types

They get humiliated by a lot more

I think he’s going to be one you don’t always notice what he does, as it feels like he’s been a little rushed at times, which to me has felt underwhelming.
He could have had another 3-4 goals over the 2 games and that would have been incredible.
Glad we’ve got him as he’s a massive upgrade on Murphy.

I don’t like calling ANB an upgrade because it puts Smurph in a conversation he doesn’t belong in.
Well realistically he is an upgrade as he is a direct replacement.

Everyone knows it.

Merrett was BOG by a mile.

Dons would have lost by 20 goal without him
Disagree, Dawson's impact per possession was way more impactful.

Both coaches thought so too 10 votes.

Firstly depends on what team eg Horks only have one real tall KPF currently with a fleet of (ducking) smalls

But I would think so for the first 3 mentioned unless needing a small defender to play lock down on a pesky small forward like The Wizard. If Murray or Keane is out Butts most likely in

Not wanting to clutter up the Thilthorpe thread I want to discuss this which was part of a discussion on Crouch

He's capable of kicking goals too but I wouldn't be spruiking it as a feature of his game. If Crouch is the man delivering the ball to our forwards, something went wrong.
I have to agree with this

Dont mind Crouch the goalkicker
Dont mind Crouch the connector

But if he is the key distributor to our forwards then we are screwed

The occasional pass sure - but his limited leg is easy to defend against

I like Dawson and Draper setting it deep forward

The biggest win from my perspective is that Curtin, Peatling and Cumming can get some confidence and continuity while we're still winning games comfortably.

Watch these 3 guys come into their own later in the season.

Peatling especially when it gets scrappy through the winter months will be invaluable.

Could almost throw Milera into that group, he's doing better than last time back off a long lay off but he will keep improving whilst getting valuable match fitness.

A fit and firing Milera makes us a better side.

Without following the preseason too closely I wasn't that stoked about Milera getting the nod over Nankervis. I'm pleasantly surprised that's performed way better than I was expecting

There’s been lots of comments about allowing the bombers to score 100 points.

They were on 61 points at 3 quarter time and we were up by 10 goals at that point.

The foot had truly come off the accelerator in the last quarter yet we still managed to out score them in the last when they were trying to get something to cling to.

Seems like a whole bunch of nothing to me.
If we left Rankine on we would have won by more.

There's so much wrong with this reasoning. With 18 players, it's possible that you could play the best game ever played and your team still loses.

We needed that 1st goal to settle us.

If we'd done something about Merret (kinda mean to tag their only performing player, but whatever) and Keane hadn't given away frees/fallen over/etc they'd have kicked 6 less too.
Didn't need to, he wasn't having a dominant game by any means in the first three quarters.

It was his last quarter which stood out like dogs balls but the game was done by then.

Crouch is not the main distributor.
Weren't 20+ of his 30-odd disposals handballs? Or was that Round One?
Crouch has been in-and-under and getting the ball out to our better distributors.
I'd like to see who were his handball recipients (anybody? are there such stats?).

Dawson/ Draper but also Rankine/ Soligo/ Hinge too. Others are lowering their eyes and finding leading forwards eg Sholl, Rachele, Cumming, ANB, Peatling
Rankine ==> Thilthorpe straight out of the centre was a thing of beauty last week, nearly impossible to shut down
