Probably because they see him as a half forward/wing

Not ideal to be resting Laird the same week Max is out. Both very important pieces in our back line. Hopefully they back 6 still functions OK with the change in personnel.

This is exactly what a few of us said - not blooding other options earlier in the year, or in softer games, has now left us in a position where Smith is the next best choice.

In isolation, his selection does make sense, but it's as a result of mistakes made previously.

Why is Nank no longer considered for the defensive rotation? Was ahead of Smith last year and hadn’t been given a chance this year.

Why would he take a haircut? He can stay Melbourne and get the full whack. And if we’re honest, this is it for him, he has no other career path in the industry after he retires. At best a gorilla here and there at lower end sportsman’s nights. Otherwise he’ll be labouring for a living.

By being the better and more reliable half back flanker over a preseason.How we select is as simple as that. The person who's seen as better gets the gig.

It is an interesting fall from grace, and coupled with us triggering an extension for Smith, does indicate we weren't particularly convinced on Nank as a half back flanker.

Or, who knows, Murray Davis may have had a word with Nicksy and said "at Brisbane under Fagan, we preferred experience depth as our first option".

Laird had a brief chat to Burgess after match sim and gestured to his leg, not to mention he played in the B team.

Didn’t seem particularly sore but I guess it was already determined he wasn’t going to play.

If it was known he wasn’t playing and he was being ‘managed’, why bother training and doing match sim? Surely better off in the rooms stretching and being worked on.

Given the loss of Michalanney and managing Laird, the ins are quite predictable.

1) Our next man in lockdown defender is Bond.

2) Our next man in rebounding defender is Smith (followed by Edwards).

3) Cumming back on the wing. Cooke to play a combination of wing and half forward.

Chayce to come on late in the third quarter as an inside midfielder providing we don’t get any injuries (touch wood)

I am a fan of The Nank but he is now competing for a small/medium forward spot. Given the inability of all the other fringe small/medium forwards to lock down a spot, I think he is still in the mix.

Geez, you are ageist & triggered by Smith's selection.

Given we have lost the experienced Laird, not unreasonable to replace him with Smith against a decent team.

We are already less experienced replacing Max with Bond.

Smith has played well in most of his games we have used him sparingly. It's not like he has been bloody ordinary like our #4.

Also, Smith may end up being sub with Jones starting.

It’s a terrible selection, it’s not much better than selecting Murphy. It’s the same low ceiling philosophy choosing experience over younger players that have a future ahead of them. Somehow Nank’s borderline form on a wing and forward has eliminated him from the defensive depth chart. It’s these selections that guarantee we’ll never win the 3 in a row required to win a flag.

Why? He was borderline in that role but was good behind the ball last year. Even if they want him there, he should still maintain his spot in the defensive order. And isn’t that where he played in the preseason games and match sim in bigman reports?

Laughable, Nank outperformed Milera at half throughout the preseason. But hasn’t had a crack during the season in that role. Instead was deployed to a wing and the coaches have locked him into only that role for this season. Bit you’d support Murphy’s re-selection if it was to occur, that’s just the type of supporter you are.

The problem is when you look at a game like Brisbane, Smith looked like a dear in the headlights

The heat was on and he wasn't coping. They've missed a massive opportunity this year to give others an opportunity, yet have been seduced by experience and SANFL form again

Now we missed giving someone like Edwards a game or 2

He's getting the traditional crows fringe player treatment. The Jones/Dowling/Taylor/Schoenberg/Cook etc special.

You're not a forward, and you're young, so you just get into the fringes of the 22 with good SANFL performances, so we park you in the forward line in an unfamiliar position where the ball isn't and then yo-yo you in and out of the team.
