I’ve just gotta say - seriously, how good is it to have Thilthorpe in our team

He’s the biggest tall forward we’ve had since Tippett, the best one grab clunker since him (and better than him) a better kick for goal than him. And so agile, good below his knees, kicks goals from small chances, great hands, fast for a big bloke, field kicking would have to be in or near the elite bracket, and giving us a real presence in ruck contests where he turns into another mid. Plenty of aggression, stands up for his team mates, demands the ball and just imposes himself on contests. A real nightmare match up for the opposition.

Him and Dawson the biggest value for money players in the team, Rankine a very close second (and arguably on the same level)

Doing the predictor. There's a good chance that Geelong get 2nd from us on % if we lose to Collingwood.
It would suck, but there's a lot of variables. We have 2 "percentage boosting" games coming up. Geelong have 3.

If we lose to Collingwood, all of a sudden they become important games and not dead rubbers.

If we end up level on points and the percentage difference is close, I 100% expect the AFL to schedule us and NM on the Saturday and Geelong/Richmond on the Sunday so that they know exactly how much percentage they'll need to make up prior to the game.

We can't keep making excuses for Cook. He was a massive liability. Uncompetitive.
I couldn’t tell where he was playing but he seems to excel as the link player who can deliver cleanly into the 50 but last night was more of an arm wrestle and that’s not his skill set

Watching the replay and we were 8 points down at 3QT…. And the move is to put Dan in the centre.. and he get the first possession for us.

Great coaching (admittedly a few of us in the GD thread were calling for it) but also Christ… he led the game with 6 contested possessions and 3 clearances in the last… we have someone very very special.

The thing i love most about this team is we have players across all lines that can legitimately win one on one contest. They aren't players that need the conditions or team structure to favour them or be handed the ball, in a contest they are good chance of winning it. Some of them win the contest with strength, others with speed and some with IQ, but they win it.

This is why we can't have players like Sholl back in the side or Murphy.

We need to stick to this winning formula.

We’re on the lower level and every time I see him I think “how big is this bloke”

He’s really starting to impose himself on marking contests and contested ground ball too. Huge confidence for a 19 year old who’s learnt how good he is. Enormous credit to the team for being able to get him in the draft

Hard to tag.

We need to demolish west coast and North particularly if we lose to Collingwood because Geelong can catch our percentage if they win by 80 the next 4 games, which they probably Will
Yeah but to overtake us we need to barely squeak over North and the Eagles. Possible, yes

EDIT - just re did it - yeah if they win all by 60 and we only win by 30 they go 2nd. Faaaaarrrk

I didn't rate Cook at all, until those two games (when he had a different role, moved well, delivered well) after which I thought, OK, we m-i-g-h-t have an AFL player here.

Now I'm thinking again, not :grimacing: :worried:.

It's under those high-pressure games against good sides that players need to stand up and impose themselves in any/every impactful way that they can on the game.
I didn't see or notice Cook was anywhere on the ground until I heard Jones was coming in for him and another poster pointed out while Jones was warming up Cook had his only possession after a bit over 2.5 quarters.

So yes, an uncompetitive liability, as you said. We cannot carry players like that into Finals.

Dawson giving it to Sicily after Soligo’s goal in the 4th is so good. He is a leader. Walks the walk and also knows when to talk a bit as well!
On one replay you can just see Dawson give him a little bump after the goal and Sicily took a big dive and started complaining to the umpire about it. Dawson would've been giving him shit for being a soft diver.

I think you can more or less lip read Daws saying "Come on, mate."

Shit, I hadn’t added margins, you’re right. They are playing some shit teams. We also need pump West Coast and North

Correct. As Scorpus said, it's all in our hands - beat Collingwood and it's not a problem, but if we don't, then it's still in our hands for big wins over WC and North if needed. We aren't relying on anyone else.

but as we have shown a few times this year our best football is better than anyone else's.

The captain once again put everyone on his shoulders, Filthy made very good defenders look ordinary, Worrell has to be AA, Milera was superb, ANB and Keays worked their backsides off and Izak did Izak things.
Yes, this!!

Worrell was a one-man WALL in that last quarter.
Rankine snapped that beautiful goal on his left then danced and waited for Tex to get into position for that long goal.
Thilthorpe, strong, great hands, elite at ground level, virtually unbeatable one-on-one.
I've apologised previously for my critical remarks about Milera until about Round 8, ish; he really impressed me yesterday.

Probably the wrong thread for this but anyway

ROB playing well this year partly because the rucks are allowed to wrestle at the centre bounce instead of jumping. Signs three year extension

Greg Swann joins AFL and says they’ll look to bring back jumping for rucks

I sense a problem here..

He gave him a nudge and then Sicily grabbed Dawson's leg. Daws should have gone down, would have been a double goal.

Who am I kidding, the ump would never do that to Hawthorn.

Watched the replay:

The Great
Curtin stood up in the first and all game
Thilthorpe
Dawsons second qtr
Rankines last qtr
Tex’s 2 clutch goals
Coming back from 2 deficits

The Good
Milera, building a very good season, defending has improved significantly
ROB, where has this years form been?
Keane
Worrell
Dawson
Gunston - have to give him credit
Soligo
ANB
Coaching team ;)
Bond liked his first game for the year
Winning with a few fair players down
The crowd

The Bad
Our first qtr
Worrells first qtr, beaten by Gunston and hacked kicks
Midfield

Ugly
Cook- dude! They’ve given you a run but you blew it, you’ve given them no choice but to drop you

The only other thing I remember like that was the Round 1 Geelong game in 2021 or 22 where we played out of our skins the 1st quarter and everyone gave 'em a standing ovation at the siren because we didn't expect to win, but everyone was like "That was bloody incredible footy".
R1 2021 - remember it well.

Coming off a wooden spoon and facing the losing grand finalist in the first round.

We were all expecting a belting, but took the fight to them and played out of our skins to take a handy lead. Great game!

In the event we don't win, it will come down to who wins their percentage boosters by more

If Geelong win their three, and we win our two, all by similar margins, we finish 2nd
