Probably because he almost exclusively kicks short. His metres gained per disposal is quite low, easier to have a high retention ratio when you only kick to 25 metres options.

Maybe thats why he is getting selected though. His ability to lower the eyes and distribute the ball accurately rather than just blaze away up the field would be highly thought of if its the right decision of course.

He has a very high threat rating. So his kicks, regardless of length, have a well above average chance of scoring

No issues with 25m kicks to advantage inside 50. That's what you want.
Most cases yes I agree, I don't think he's an elite kick or anything though. Sort of put him in the same boat as ANB, he's got craft and composure.

Jon Ralph going with the "Laird facing MRO scrutiny for hit on Duggan"

Dont see him getting a week for it, but if he did, Smith would jump back in you'd think
That’s exactly what will occur. You may notice Nicks has been swapping them both out anyway. It’s actually a good strategy, because although they are both far from their previous greatness, they are serviceable. I reckon even without the MRO, Nicks was going to do it.

Drop Laird for Smith this week? I doubt it.

Nah, Laird is clearly preferred to Smith, and rightly so. He would have stayed in if not suspended.

Updated changes (as in the reality, not what I would do) w Laird suspension included:

Scenario 1: Peatling passed fit

Out:
Laird (susp), Burgess, Jones, Murray*

In:
Smith, Walker, Dowling, Butts*

Sub:
Dowling

Emg:
Draper, Nankervis, Murray

Scenario 2: Peatling ruled out

Out:
Laird, Burgess, Jones, Murray*, Peatling

In:
Smith, Walker, Dowling, Butts*, Draper

Sub:
Dowling or Draper

Emg:
Nankervis, Murray, Schoenberg

Yes 4-5 changes is a lot.

I believe there will be 4 changes minimum if Peatling is ruled out, and 3 minimum if Peatling is in.

Realistically Burgess and Jones shouldn’t even count as changes. They were never going to be there this week in any capacity. Neither are playing against Collingwood, and it’s blindingly obvious. That’s 2 changes right there.

Laird is a forced change. That’s 3 absolute lock changes.

Butts likely never would’ve left the side if his lung didn’t collapse. He’s back, he’s played a full SANFL game, and Murray doesn’t look anywhere near as good as him at AFL level to be blunt. No brainer for mine, it’s just a matter of whether they want to give Butts one more at SANFL level to build him back up, which only D Burgess and co will know. Murray stays in if it is assessed that Butts is not back to 100%.

And then Peatling might be another forced change.

If I was a selector, I would be bringing in Nankervis instead of Smith, but we know that won’t be happening.

Is he the most uncoordinated handballer you have ever seen? Like someone has to try hard to be as awkward with the ball in hand as big ROB. His kicking has definitely improved a LOT. Still remember a couple of his first attempts at goal haha
This might explain some of his tap work.

Isn't a handball just a variation of hitting the ball in a desired direction with your hand?
