He had 11 disposals to half time then 2 for the 3rd quarter but got off the chain ahain for 6 in the last when it was vital to shut him down

As noted by cmndstab Murphy looked to be playing him 2-3m off . Was it effective? Maybe . Who knows who else took up the slack when he wasnt near

I would expect a close checking defender to be - you know - close

Then when we have the ball to be loose
Murphys fresh legs from being managed last week

For a shutdown job it was poor. There was no body contact, no body checks, no niggle, he just sat 4 - 5 metres off him and followed him around. And got torched a few times with pure leg speed. A SANFL top up player could do that.
Yet strangely no other club has thought to use a spud to take Jaicos out of the game*. All the other clubs must enjoy watching him rack up nearly 30 disposals each week.

The shutdown role in the AFL nowadays isn’t about standing on the oppositions boots and tugging their jumper. It is about ensuring the player doesn’t get easy uncontested possessions.

Before last night Jaicos was averaging 19 uncontested possessions a game, last night he had 8 uncontested possessions.

He has averaged nearly 4 inside 50s a game, last night he had ONE.

He was either shutdown or he ate a raw prawn for breakfast?

I am not suggesting that Nicks is the new master coach, * Sam Mitchell did a similar thing last week but Jaicos still had 14 uncontested possessions against the Hawks.

15 wins the minimum to play finals this year

Interesting how the reverse isn't being spoken about much

8 wins in a season is more often than not a bottom 4 finish.

There are currently seven teams putting in bottom 4 performances

Anyone thinking that was a bad game needs their head read. That was intense finals pressure from the first minute with the majority of the game played in very slippery conditions. They threw their best punch, we saw that and said I'll raise you. Collingwood only kicked THREE GOALS after quarter time.

And then to win the arm wrestle and hold on in that finish. We've now done it against Brisbane, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Gold Coast, Bulldogs and GWS. Instead of being on the losing end of close finishes, we've been on the winning end almost every time. This is a seriously good football side. After so many years of garbage it's still hard to take it all in.

Our back six is elite. Worrell and Keane - I don't think I've ever seen two KPDs improve so much in one season. We have multiple genuine superstars who can win the big moments that win big finals. To go all the way, it'll be important we get Max and Rash back, for their own contributions but also to consign our current 21-23 players to the seconds.

I hope inside the four walls they can keep the lid on. Nothing is going to be easy from here. But we couldn't be better positioned to give it a red hot crack.

Bond simply does not get enough credit.
Takes the oppositions best small forward every time he plays and rarely has his colours lowered.
Bond was huge last night. Going to be a tough convo when Max is fit.

I'll say it again, if we want someone for this role how have we not developed Jones for this? Massive tank, taller, stronger and still quite quick even having lost a couple of yards.

Is anyone gonna make a gif of ROB handballing to Dawson then getting in his way, so Dawson changes direction but the ROB gets in the way again etc? Make it loop so ROB just keeps getting in the way for infinity... Which is about how long it seemed IRL (and I was fuming) but it's just funny now since we ended up winning.

Nope. You can take "er" easy, mate, if you want.

10 years of losses to those campaigners, over.
A close win, even better.
We're top and likely to be Minor Premiers.

Mate, we've been in the Finals WILDERNESS for 8 years and I gonna wallow while the wallowing's good.
Maybe contextual… if I said it in the voice of the narrator from big lebowski… it wasn’t literal 😀 so enjoy 😊

It was bloody obvious to anyone at the match that understands football. We stopped Josh Daicos getting uncontested possessions and Collingwood just blasted the ball into their F50 and our boys mopped it up.

I’m not sure if we will use Murphy again in this type of role. It made things very difficult for Taylor who usually plays the defensive forward role. It wouldn’t surprise me if Murphy isn’t in the 23 next week but the Murphy Derangement Syndrome over the last few days has been ridiculous.

He did his job tonight, end of story.

But, but, but everyone checked the stats so he must have been garbage.
I agree that Murphy did a relatively decent job at this specific role, he was looking for daicos and played arm across defence at every stoppage and was only about 1m metre off him when ball was 50m away. I wouldn't call it sacrificing his game cos he doesn't have game but there is a small ounce of deserved credit there.

He's still not up to it, we badly need a different option including the complete lock down defensive half forward role. I think everyone is agreeing on this point at least don't we?

I just reckon someone playing a tagging / run with / stopper role would have more than 9 pressure acts

Unless putting Murphy on Daicos meant Collingwood avoided giving the ball to him
Well, your second comment is not ridiculous. Simply having someone follow him around all night would certainly reduce how much he was used as an option to move the ball. It’s not as though he’s an inside mid who is always around the ball regardless.

It didn't feel like daicos was used in terms of exiting defense, got all his ball around stoppages and just outworking or out positioning Murphy. To be honest there wasn't much uncontested ball all night.
