Would you leave out Maley and bring in another small for tonight if it continues to rain?

Probably not. Doesn't leave us much flexibility with Thilthorpe if Walker is the only other tall up there, and we also don't have a backup ruck if Maley goes out.

Rain is supposed to blow itself out in the next hour or so, anyway.

I’m baffled by the anti Nank sentiment.

Kid has plenty of talent and has never been given a proper run at it.
It's obvious to the eye that he's got the talent. He has probably had one decent run of games where his form did drop off (or never really got going). I would keep trying him.

Dowling hasn't caught my eye at all. Looked out of his depth against North Melbourne (despite the stats).

Edwards we obviously don't know yet and may as well give him a go. Bigman doesn't think he's ready for midfield though.

If he's best on ground tonight he might sneak onto the emergency list next week

I suspect that Nankervis is one of those naturally creative and attacking players who will look great when the rest of the side is working well, and will get exposed when the rest of the side is poor.

He's not going to put the team on his back when we're down, but he will add cream on top when we're firing.

He's worth persisting with because if the rest of the side is poor, it doesn't really matter anyway.

Geelong would have turned Nank into a very handy footballer by now
They would have him out of the team in exchange for a random first rounder they traded in from a non-vic club for a bag of chips

Nope. Need Maley to soak up the 2nd ruck minutes.

I just hope Hinge is up for four quarters of AFL footy, started like a house on fire in the SANFL last week but faded out of the game after that.
Ball movement out of defence has been an issue for us. I think that Hinge has been rushed in as he’s seen as a solution.

Agree with concerns that he’s under done, but he is someone who provides run from defence and overlap.

You’re confusing us excusing poor performing wingmen with our tried and true ‘what you don’t see’, with the role being overated.

Nope. This is more a complaint in line what the meta is in the league right now then "oh we do it this way, and it must be correct". A meta that is "if you are rating wing as more important then half back, you're not long for a job as a head coach".

After all, we are firmly in a generation (or two) where the players with the highest potential to be elite wingers aren't playing wing as their primary role. They're either playing inside midfield (with maybe some wing time sprinkled in), half forward, or half back. Half back (and third tall) is what controls the quality/speed of ball movement as they are usually the first point of contacts when turnovers and switches occur, giving them the most time with the game in a state where the opposition is disorganised.

Wing is (somewhat) valuable, but it is the cream so to say. It's not the cake. Even then, it's just as likely the best use for wing is purely developmental where you just chuck some kid you think is an inside midfielder in 2-3 years there to build their game.

If you want a notable real world example of this playing out in the last 18 months, look no further to Collingwood who converted their (at the time recently) AA selected wing in Josh Daicos to half back as a response to Nick going to a full time inside mid. Even the star wings aren't immune to half back being a more important position.

The problem Nank has is yes he has footballing ability but he has hit his ceiling. Thats not a bad thing but he isnt a best 22 player in a good side. Am I saying others like Dowling and Edwards will be better....we dont know except I can watch Nankervis today and everyone on here knows what he type of game he brings to the table.

But if Edwards and Dowling got selected...we have no idea but we know both know how to get the ball and use it. Thats a brave selection. Nank is a a vanilla selection selected purely on the basis Nicks knows he will get his low to mid teen disposals.

I will tell you know, Dowling has played every game better than Nanks best game. Dowling isnt playing. Thats why people dont rate Nank.
Think his versatility is his strength and weakness. He get put in so many positions, that it’s hard for him to have some consistency. Though he does try to hard and get caught on the occasional HTB.

He is clearly talented but I do wonder if he would improve a lot of the coach gave him a block of games to get some confidence.
