Re: Crouch ...
Our midfield did well (better) tonight without him, helped by a better effort from ROB in ruck.
ROB still hit a few Carlton blokes with taps down their throats, but his positioning was much better (didn't impede teammates as much as he has).
Two of his handball involvements were excellent and resulted in goals!
Crouch should stay out for good.

Is it time to try Jones again?

Can Edwards play there?
I don't feel like Jones ever succeeded in any position at AFL level.

Edwards may be an option. Or Curtin on the wing for longer. Perhaps Soligo gets pushed out there more, he is a little down this last few weeks.

Feels like a guy who we've overcoached and he's not playing on instinct anymore. Just looks like he's got 10 things running through his head when he gets it and I don't recall him being so tentative with the ball in hand previous to this year.
I don’t think it’s coaching (it can’t always be blamed on coaching…) I just think his instinct is to evade to find space and a better option but at the moment he’s getting caught up doing it.

When it works it’s what makes him look such a good prospect rather than banging it blindly

Have opposition worked that out and therefore aware and closing him off and he needs to get better to overcome it?

Is he just a step off his best and instead of it working it gets him tangled up and goes from a great play to looking really awkward?

I’m not sure but it doesn’t look like it’s been coached into him and that’s just an easy “young players good and anything bad must be coaches fault” mentality

We are kinda one wingman short and one half back too many.

Be nice if one of Milera, Hinge, Max, Nank or Smithers could be trusted on the wing, or Sholl kept is last years form.
This is very true

Think wing is our hardest position to nail due to lack of options making it their own and half back the one where we’ve got most flexibility of choice

What the club will do:

Out: Nank
In: Hinge

Sub Smith (Berry to best 22).

What I would do:

Out: Smith, Nank
In: Hinge, Bond

Sub: Berry

Have been anti using a tagger, but think the 1 way we lost to the Pear is if Butters gets off the chain. I would bring in Bond purely for that reason. Smith / Serong destroyed us and Cripps was given far too much space at least 5 stoppages.

Unlucky that Nank has fallen behind Smith in the half back pecking order based on inability to play on a wing. Agree, it’ll just be Nank for Hinge, although that displaces another defender up the ground. Smith may make way for Hinge with someone else coming in for Nank. Either way, can’t see Nank surviving.

Got to look at our opponents for next week. What are their strengths? Obviously, Hinge comes back in but I’d play horses for courses and bring in Bond to help nullify their midfield… their only strength. I say “their “ because I don’t wish to mention the team’s name on a relaxing Sunday morning.

Edwards skill set is that of a modern day wingman/outside mid, good pace, decent tank, very penetrating kick, tall and good overhead.
If anyone should be developed for the role it's Edwards IMO.
I we’re replacing Nank on the wing would you go Dowling or edwards?

Given they’ve been training edwards for half back it’s an interesting decision especially given there’s 1 position with a clear better likelihood of opportunity

Edwards, way more penetrating kick, and I daresay more accurate.

Dowling I think if he makes it will be as a high half forward something like a Tom Lynch (Crows) role where he shares similar endurance to be the connector.

I’d be happy with that

Just listed Dowling as an in as seems he may be playing more wing in SANFL (not sure if true) and whether they’d debut a kid in a position they haven’t played him

But from what I’m hearing about edwards I’d love to see him give a shot and that wing is so up for grabs

Tough selection week as I think all of Berry, Nankervis and Smith have a case for being retained for different reasons and Hinge is a must. Smith certainly played well but has come from a long way back and is not best 23, Nankervis has been poor but we do need to develop someone to play wing, and Berry was great off the bench but could be last in, first out.

Given that someone needs to play further up the ground I think Smith is the best choice for that wing role from those who played this week. Hinge and Milera are more solid defensively. And I'd retain Berry as the sub - probably nobody comes in from SANFL. But could see it going a few different ways, and would love for the club to try and identify who they want playing that last spot on the wing in finals this year and give that player a decent run at it now, whether it is Nankervis, Smith, Sholl, Jones, Dowling, Edwards or someone else (assuming Curtin and Cumming aren't going anywhere).

One thing I've noticed about Nank is almost every time he gets the ball he tries to take on a tackler. Usually by trying to spin out of it which results in someone else tackling him and him either giving away a free or a wild handball to get rid of it. Looks like he is trying to show he can evade everyone rather than do the simple pass each time. Has happened multiple times a game the last few weeks
This happens so much with him, I reckon it's an instruction. Lots of our guys are doing that when trying to draw an oppo player in and release a handball when we are setting up a transition from defence.

Get the arms high, stand in the tackle and handball to a running player. It works when it works, I guess.

Just needs to learn his limitations.

He can't be trying to bust tackles left right and centre. Young players go through flat spots, he's got time to get it sorted.
Looks to me like he not only has to learn his own limitations, but the limitations that come with a wing role. He moves like he has the freedom and space he’d have as a half-back flank.

Don't see why Hinge couldn't be shifted to wing.

We actually need some injuries and unavailability periods so we can get more guys coming through. Edwards, Ryan, Pedlar, Draper, Bond, McAndrew, Dowling all needing AFL minutes

I think Hinge might come in for Nank

Curtin wing and Smith sub ?

Berry would be stiff and Nank is stiff for not being played in his best position
