First, there was "drop Berry" from Scorpus.
Now this:

Underdone, maybe.
Not AFL-match-fit.
Rusty, for sure. He was cherry-ripe after pre-season then copped the knee injury.

However, there was enough there of his best on Friday as well as the composed handball under immense time-pressure to Cook** for the fabulous winner to see that Curtin is necessary to our best-23.

**plenty of blokes would've panicked and handballed at Cook, stopping his forward run or, worse, behind him.

*** very few players would have handballed behind him. Stands out like the proverbial when players do it.

If the bolded is true, they weren't "passengers".
Passengers do sfa.

Yep, fair point :thumbsu: .
+
he was underdone, not AFL-match-fit (which you only get by playing AFL) and returning from injury (gets between the ears a bit).

No, passengers don’t do nothing, they do nowhere near enough. A couple of good moments over 4 quarters of football doesn’t move someone out of passenger category. I’m not blaming Curtin, he did the best he could with the conditioning he had. He just shouldn’t have been selected.

In reverse order:
Stands out like the proverbial when players do it.
I said "or, worse, behind him". It was a worse-case scenario, but handballs especially critical handballs with 20-odd seconds to play do not always come off.
*** very few players would have handballed behind him.
Yes, it happens rarely.

He wasn't BOG. That was Milera or Aliir Aliir.
He had many fumbles, i just highlighted an example. If you're being genuine you know there were many fumbles, and many turnovers.

And yes - that's how momentum works.
agree re too many fumbles that ultimately he needs to reduce to become a very good mid. but he has definitely improved this year. saying he wasnt BOG is a little silly mate even if Junior or AA could had won it. Berrys 29 disposals, 700 metres gained and 19 tackles is enormous . RARELY do you see someone with such a massive rating differential relative to other players (over 30% higher rating than ANY other player on the ground is a crazy high differential and demeans Berry saying he wasnt at least right up there as BOG)

No, passengers don’t do nothing, they do nowhere near enough.
By definition, passengers sit and do nothing except keep company, fill a seat, eat/drink, fart in their sleep and/or look at the scenery. They contribute zero in getting from A to B.
In AFL footy terms, Murphy was a passenger damn-near every game he played.

On Friday, even as underdone and rusty as he was, Curtin was not a passenger.
A couple of good moments over 4 quarters of football doesn’t move someone out of passenger category.
Actually, yes, it does.
Additionally, Curtin had more than "a couple of good moments" --- good positioning-and-competing, a couple of great assists, some slick delivery by foot.
I’m not blaming Curtin, he did the best he could with the conditioning he had.
Yes.
He just shouldn’t have been selected.
Our opinions about "should/shouldn't" are speculation only, carry no weight, and have no effect on Selection but most are fair enough in this discussion forum.
He was selected and I was happy he was. He'll be better for the run at AFL level than if he ran rampant in the SANFL.
He played serviceably, far from our worst, topped off thrillingly by his last 2 acts on-field.
I'm happy to agree to disagree; thanks for being civil about it all :thumbsu:.

agree that curtin worked his way into things. at least 2-3 goal assist handballs in the second half and the last 'beautiful play' he both flew for the mark (and likely would have taken it if not for racheles interference) and then positioned himself and executed a crucial middle link of the winning play - HOW GOOD IS IT TO WATCH THIS LAST ****ING MINUTE ON REPLAY and seeing the crowd going BUNTA

even with mileras non goal curtin dived and pushed the ball out to neutral territory that allowed EXCELLENT play by Taylor to get the ball to Keays to then handball (somewhat awkwardly as per his MO) to Mileras shot from 50

curtin was slow to get going but will improve from here. as mentioned the other week, a coach said allow around 6 weeks from his comeback game (now 2 weeks in) to get back to full form ie after the bye

Cmon Velvet George firstly a genuine thanks for your post y/day man regarding supporting the upbeat mood on the board but surely we have all watched this last 1-2 minutes a few times this weekend ! (or is it just me haha)

4 clearances from 71% CBA's

Wines & JHF had 7 clearances from less CBA attendances

Soligo & Rankine more clearances than Berry

Our midfield issues have always been around clearance numbers

Yes, ah the days when Laird was in there.

Thank god we have moved on from that.

Well the corporate I worked for allowed two days after the day of death then another for the funeral when my dad passed away.

Bastards!

National employment standards is 2 days bereavement. Any more and you’d need a sick certificate or use annual leave. It might seem tough, but life goes on.

Curtin had 5 score involvements.

He did more in the second half.

Don’t need to worry, some of the supposed experts on here have zero idea.

He needs time to settle, takes too many steps ....won't get that luxury often from the better midfields

Just objectively study him ....it's pretty obvious
Didn’t he just play one of the better midfields?

Yeh, well thats well and good.

Sometimes there are more important things in life.

After that occurred I certainly learnt to play the game but within the rules.

This info is several degrees of separation away from anyone who'd really know so take it with however many grains of salt you like

Thilthorpe is under fairly significant duress with his back (well, der)

Resting for a week here or there would have minimal to no positive impact

Could have a longer lay off to get it right but the recovery timeline is unknown. So could be a small, medium or lengthy lay off. Season may be done by the time he's better so is playing through, trying to manage it.

My guess:
If we get a couple of wins ahead of the ledger we may try to sneak a month off for him, maybe 1-2 matches either side of our Rnd 12 bye.

It’s up to the employee. No decent business is denying annual leave for bereavement, but nor should the business cover the cost. You need more time off, get a certificate or dip into your leave, no problemo. Elite sports is a different beast though, comparing to ordinary business is folly.

Like Pyke’s ‘mini preseason’ for Tex that ended after a couple of losses and we got behind in the ledger.

My view is you get it right, regardless of how long it takes. 2027 we could be competing if we have a new coach.

This might be a fair point if he had, say, 12 touches and 19 tackles. But he had 29 touches and 19 tackles. That means he was first to the ball a hell of a lot... and then when he wasn't, he was able to nullify the contest 19 times.

Are we really going to say that he should have won the ball 48 times?
And even if he got the ball 48 times he would have been an "ineffective accumulator crab".

There is always a negative when someone doesn't like a player.
