Berry's offensive game has clearly improved but his defensive game has dropped since his first year or so. The question is whether he's at his ceiling.

EDIT: If he's our best midfielder we have problems.

Dawson and Fog will come in.

Walker and Butts will go out.

They may just leave it at that?

Who else is available?

Tbh the worst performed on the team was probably Curtin, but you'd excuse that for first game back.
Murray has to come in for Butts.

He just recorded the second most tackles ever in an AFL game with 19 tackles. Not sure what else he can do defensively.

Is TTs back still ****ed? Certainly feel at times like things look tough for him (still does some special stuff).

I think we can afford to play without both. Send Nick Murray forward, send Dawson forward, heck send Dan Curtin forward for stretches.

I dont want the team to underestimate Richmond but Dawson or Murray going forward can give us the marking target and Fog if he is ready.

Maybe Filthy just needs a rest here. Have him slightly fresher for the North/Hawks games and then another bye.

Disregard if he is physically fine I guess.
He looked extremely sore after a lot of contests was visibly struggling but still tried to compete, can tell he badly needs a rest

If we bring Draper in it will be the same old story. Nicks will stick him in the graveyard HFF role with maybe 2 or 3 squirts through the middle. He will have ten touches in a couple of games and then be dropped due to not having done enough. Rinse repeat.
Against richmond if Dawson comes back he should be parked at hff or hbf, no need for him in the midfield give that to others.

Good point that this probably a good time to give McAndrew a game off.

Given ANB is suffering with his knee, crazy to risk him.
Yeah McAndrew needs a game off or some more help. The obvious is to get some big bodies against Xerri who wil be out to injure him. Seems like a game that ROB is actually a horse for the course, esp around the ground.

I dont think theyll be out to injure him as such

In: Nick Murray, Jordan Dawson, Charlie Edwards

Out: Jordan Butts, Tex Walker, Alex Neil-Bullen

Think Fog will miss one more

Richmond are no good. Safe to rest a few

Out: Walker (hamstring), Butts (groin), Thilthorpe (rested), McAndrew (rested), Neal-Bullen (rested), Cumming ("rested")

In: Fogarty, N. Murray, Maley, O'Brien, Draper, Dawson

(Obviously we won't drop Berry)

No obviously not deliberately but you be a fool to think xerri won’t use his big frame and jump into mcandrews lighter frame and hope it hurts him. He has history. Besides the point was this is probably the only game where ROB is a matchup.

Also I dont want Berry dropped (and the PR/club culture impact of doing that off a showdown medal would be insane)

BUT

his fumbles ARE an issue. A big issue.
Agree, can't drop Berry. Regarding fumbles, is that a two way street - person giving the handball slightly off results in Berry fumbling. Maybe not always his fault.

No change: Don't drop Toby Murray, give him games. This might be a stretch but I see attributes - agile, ruck craft, forward marking / leading and kicking goals. Could be a surprise gem.

Tex and Butts are outs with injuries.

Plus, Dawson is an automatic in

I think our midfield performed quite well so wouldn't suggest any immediate changes, but we do need to think about how we transition our midfield to a more dynamic setup that does not have so much Berry/Peatling/Soligo. This week we used those 3 plus Rankine as the main midfielders and Rachele as the 5th mid. With Curtin building fitness and Dawson coming back there's even more options we might want to see in there, but all of whom can play other roles well.

One obvious solution is to keep using our versatile options in other spots and just have one of Rankine, Rachele and Dawson at each centre bounce. But we could certainly end up being a better team dropping one of Berry or Peatling, particularly once Ah Chee comes back to play forward, or if we want to play Curtin through the middle.

That could be a genuinely tough selection decision as none of them have been poor. Berry is having the best season of his career and Peatling has been completely fine.

For this week I suspect it's just Fogarty/Maley, Dawson and N. Murray in, with Walker, Butts and Bond as outs. Dawson plays behind the ball when he's not in the midfield.

Just asking, but why the push from a number here for Finbar Maley. Yes, he can do the odd mark and provide a contest, but he, like ROB, can hardly do a set shot on goal to save themselves. We want skill and finish which we saw more of last night with the likes of Curtin and Soligo in, rather than this destructive and frustrating same old same old!

He's brilliant with checksides. He has 2/2 AFL, 1/1 SANFL.

A second ruck is required and from first impression Maley looked ok, but last night Toby showed he is the man moving forward. I hope Nicks gives him a decent block of games now to gain confidence. He'll be even more impressive in 10 weeks, I reckon. He looked good in the SANFL last year. Good luck to him.
