Review R9: The Good, Bad and the Ugly vs. Port Adelaide

Rankine himself said when interviewed afterwards that he couldn't get into the game

Nice that he bobbed up with some crucial goals of course

They were only crucial because he, Dawson, Soligo (and many others) had been so down
Rankine was awful in the midfield and decent once we shifted him forward.

I thought Nicks was extremely slow to react to him getting torched in the centre. He could have rotated forward more well before we made the sub

Hurt factor is genuinely real.

A narrow loss will hurt a lot lot more than a 10 goal thumping, which is what the neighbours were half expecting.

Last night was beautiful.
Captain Courageous’ post game speech said it all he is a poor leader and went missing when heat was on

Butters or Thilthy clear medal winner

Good:
The absolutely amazing defensive effort, repelling 62 inside 50s. Worrell and Keane amazing, especially that Keane mark. Thats the good you take with the bad, if thats the good I am happy.
Worrell 21 kicks and 714M gained, what a find. If only we selected a mid in 2019...
Everyone was well down but everyone chipped in when we needed it.

Riley Thilthorpe, his hands looked much better this week
Izak Rankine came with the goal from his rear end which we needed
Got annihilated in every stat except the one that mattered the most
GOOD football sides win these games, top 4 sides win these games by 5 goals with rebound

Bad:
Some of the set shot goal kicking barely made it
Our midfield is still a work in progress, Berry should have played full game minutes
Curtin was invisible but it wasn't the night for him

Ugly:
Port kicking goal after goal from either a free kick or some perfect bounce (that SPP goal, horses ars*), that torpedo scrubber kick from Finlayson (bullsh*t), that JHF goal off the hardest angle after the ball (get stuffed).

Port were excellent last night, Rozee, Butters, JHF, Bergman and Aliir were top shelf (Bergman shut down Dawson too). Their hands from inside to out are elite and we really struggled with that. Tonnes of space for players outside the contest. Hawthorn couldn't stop that and were 8 goals down at QTR time.

The supporters on here desperately trying to convince themselves Nicks is a horrible, blundering idiot after a showdown win. Was he losing contested possession by 14 and -27 in clearances? Did he give away 4 x 50M penalties, 2 of which resulted in goals? Thats on the players.
Bottling the game up worked as they were dominating us. We ground it out. Nobody knows what would have happened if we kept attacking, they could have loaded up the backline and gotten easy entry on rebound.

Rankine is a natural forward who we have looked to turn into a mid. he is not a natural mid. so the smart thing to do as a coach is actually have him be a forward who rotates into the centre. Not be a mid who rotates into the forward line.

Every week in here people want him dropped

It’s not personal and directed at you

But everywhere I look Bigfooty , twitter and Facebook absolute morons want him dropped

He stuck it up them again , he’s a gun player for us and right up there with in form players as key defender in comp

Maybe you should stop thinking every post is directed at you
I’m not, I don’t believe what you’re posting is accurate. Who wants him dropped every week?

Are you related to Keane by any chance?

Hope so

Seriously though check some twitter etc and every week crows supporters call for him to be dropped because he gave away a free or had a turnover

It’s crazy

Don't agree with this at all.

We had the first 5 shots of the last quarter, got 20 points up then started shutting down the game.

Port proceeded to have all eight remaining shots in the game while we went scoreless.

Port weren't dominating until we let them, and that's on Nicks

A million times yes. I missed the game, saw the result and came on here to savour the gloating. Pages of sooking.
We won a frigging showdown
Maybe you should watch it before commenting yeah?

Then give us your thoughts on how we almost blew a 4 goal lead when Nicks went defensive with 10 mins to go.

Then how we were smashed in clearances and inside 50s.

It’s great we won but we scraped in against a shit team with some major issues with our game and our coach being a ****ing moron.

Should just not bother having the medal. A hbf being awarded over a marking forward or pure mid (butters) what a laugh.

A few of those 50m were from shit umpiring though. They weren't dominating us until we started to slow the game down in the last 10 minutes after being 4 goals up, we would likely have kicked more goals given how dominate we were up until then with how Thilthorpe was playing. Nicks virtually didn't use him in the last 10 minutes.

We've basically only played middle of the ladder teams so far

7 games to come against the 5 other top 6 sides.
6 games to come against the bottom 5
And another Showdown

We've got Collingwood, Brisbane, Hawthorn and Gold Coast as home games still. If we split those 2-2, and win our other "games we should win", we'll play finals.

Unfortunately we always drop "a game we should win", and I don't trust Nicks against those four well coached sides.

The media has us almost locked but I'd say it's still a toss up.

Wake up, make coffee, double check the result just to be sure.... GROTTO - Agree, a close win is even more satisfying over the swamp filth :hearts: :praying:

You see the same phenomenon on here where people massively overrate the significance of isolated mistakes. Hinge is another one who gets this treatment. You want these players to take the game on, and part of that is accepting errors. I think a lot of viewers miss when some of our more creative players (Hinge, Rankine, Soligo for instance) find options that other players would miss that create scoring opportunities. Part of the downside of that is that sometimes they will also make mistakes other players would not make because they would take an easy option or go long down the line (Laird for example, or Butts).

Keane has had a fantastic year, aside from maybe one game. Should be an absolute lock with 0% chance of being dropped, but he's one of the more commonly mentioned 'omit' players in selection threads beyond the ROB/Milera/Laird whipping boys.

Absolutely. IMO - we have played one bad game (Freo) and one bad quarter (4th against Geelong) all year.

I dont actually think we played that bad tonight. We had some bad patches, but Port showed up.

Port got smoked in round 1 by Collingwood and rebounded with a 72 point win the next week. They were heavy favs against the Saints and lost by 12 and came out firing and beat the Hawks by 30. They were insipid against the Doggies and were always going to come out absolutely firing. We held up and got the all important 4 points.
I thought we were poor but found a way to win so all credit

Don’t win without Rankine class

But our midfield just ain’t up to scratch with best teams unfort , the rest of our side is

Exactly

Well summarised
