Tonight's game truly highlights how badly we are coached....
I agree; several other posters have said the same thing.
Watching live, after Rankine's 2 last-quarter goals, we were 25 points up with 15 minutes to play.

A Coach with killer instincts would have let his team ride the adrenalin wave and keep attacking; even one more goal would have demoralised most oppositions.

But NO; not our Matthew Nicks. it was clear to me that Nicks had called time on the game and sent out the word to protect the lead. So the Crows stopped doing what they'd done to get ahead and sure enough PA got back into the game.
Later, when PA got to within a kick, Nicks placed our strongest body and best mark (Thilthorpe) ahead of the ball  .
It was shit Coaching. Negative, panicked Coaching.
For the love of Blighty, sack Nicks.

Good thing that Keane took that excellent mark running back into footsteps behind him.

Now I've sobered up, I'll say that's a hard game to evaluate. If that was good port that we played against tonight, the one that beat hawthorn, then it was a very good game by us, conversely if that was the western bulldogs port then man were we shit.

It's impossible to say, this week will help us find out.

Reckon a few ppl could do with rotating out for a freshen up, Zac Taylor and Curtin are two examples. Give Dowling and Berry full runs, need speed and tank against Collingwood.

It's time to play to our strengths and let the chips fall where they may.
This. @ 25 points up with 15 to play, back in our fitness and Forwards' dominance to kick us further ahead!
There's no way we beat Collingwood if we play it safe again.
That team tonight, with so many of our best players held or beaten, under that Coach will get hammered by the Pies next week.
Hopefully those last 10 minutes were a wake up call that we can't afford to do it again.
You'd think, yeah?
But our Nicks will not learn from that. He hasn't, after 5 years and 9 games, so why now?

By all means, with 90 seconds or so to play, Footy101 dictates that you defend a lead with slow-down play.
But with 10+ minutes left?
Nfw.

You need to either watch the game again or give it up , find new hobbies etc
Rankine himself said when interviewed afterwards that he couldn't get into the game

Nice that he bobbed up with some crucial goals of course

They were only crucial because he, Dawson, Soligo (and many others) had been so down

Yet he still found a way to win the game for us

Who cares if a player is down on form for most of the game, as long as their form patch pretty much wins the game

Dawson/Soligo are the ones that deserve the criticism

They're Rankine's own words

The commentators pointed out that we had a very low number of handballs (80) deep into the 3rd quarter. We went back to hack kicks. No control of the ball from stoppages or handball chains. Our wings, half backs & high high forwards couldn't get involved as a result
Nicks in the presser reckons we overused the handball.

We were off all night, with the exception of the first 10+ minutes, a small patch in the second qtr, and a late patch in the 3rd qtr and early 4th qtr.

Whinge all you like. There's plenty to whinge about. But FFS be happy for the win, especially it being a showdown where Port's season was virtually on the line.

We won. Hint - That's what good teams do even when they're off their game.

It had a Fremantle game feel except against a shitter opponent

A win over Port, away Showdown, sitting 6-3. Should be happy I know but last night just had so many of our failed season traits on show

I honestly can’t remember a game where we had so many down players.
Thilthorpe
Peatling
Worrell
Keane (for his mark)
Rob (for his mark)
Fog (yes I know only 12 touches)
Can hold their heads high

We have a lot of down players every week. It just gets hidden by the results. This is a coaching failure.

Hurt factor is genuinely real.

A narrow loss will hurt a lot lot more than a 10 goal thumping, which is what the neighbours were half expecting.

Last night was beautiful.

Well when your side plays well but still loses to a side that phoned it in with a subpar coach then its bound to hurt when you realise how crap you really are.
