The truth is somewhere in between completely innocent and totally racist. Sheedy, Danniher were neither saints nor criminals of the century, they were just normal white aussie men in position of power. They were neighter hillbilly nor mother teresas in a manner of speaking.
Daniher definitely had hillbilly vibes. Full banjo on the verandah type stuff.

The thing I don’t get in this thread or in any thread for that matter is how people who have no idea (99% of us) just say what did or didn’t happen in regards to those accused.
You get those saying Sheedy for example is this, he’s that, he’s not this, he’s not that.
None of us really know let’s be honest, it’ll play out.
Just go and check any crime threads… * me dead!

Where in history has being born white meant you're forced into subjugation?
History is full of groups of “white people” being enslaved.

Not sure what that has to do with this thread.

Uh yes, predictable deflection. Other types of deflection such as 'but in some areas, whites are the minority' or 'we white get discriminted in blah blah industries' have also been used. The context of racism in the current time is totally irrelevant to the period when white got enslaved.

Today, Aus is a nation built during the victoria era, an era known for it's legalised slavery and violent colonisation. The wealth of white nations have been built on exploitation, rape and pillage of other colonies. The racists we are talking about are not only those doing the aggressive abuse but also those trying to 'help' them. Those 'help' is not for the victims but for the personal aggrandization of those 'helpers' as they want to satisfy their moral compass.

Simple question to a statement claiming no white people have ever been subjugated when it’s obviously a false statement.

Nothing to do with what this thread was originally about.

Putting a 2024 lens on 1970’s/80’s issues or standards is such a dangerous game to play.

Compare it to the recent dramas involving Collingwood or Hawthorn which took place within the last 15 years and the two are so far away from each other.

Feel for those players who were subjected to what claim they were subject too, but one wonders the motivation behind it.

Every season we find ourselves debating current racism in football and while it's more isolated now it's still happening. Perhaps coming to terms properly with what happened in the past rather than paying lip service to it we can stop it occurring again in the future.

It isn’t, but unfortunately it happens. The difference is that some people like to infer that white so and so is offensive, which it really isn’t. It’s just a way to excuse the taunts and abuse towards aboriginals by calling them black so and so. Black carries a lot more weight because of what has happened to black people in Australia.

So simply doing your job being yelled at and being called a white c*** isnt offensive?

Thats fine is it?

I think how indigenous players were treated was terrible and the AFL did SFA about it until they realised it would affect their bottom line. So in principle I dont have an issue with ex employees taking their ex employer to task / court for ignoring workplace bullying and discrimination.

But dont come on here and say it doesnt matter when a person of colour tee's off at white people they dont even know and scream racist abuse in their face at work. It is still racism.

If you get offended by that as a white person then good luck to you. You’ve got 250 years of white privilege behind you to make you feel better.

What is the danger you are concerned about here?

This is happening throughout society. It is the sensible and healthy thing to do. Whether examining historical racism or physical or sexual abuse; getting the skeletons out of the closet is a good thing. Not sure why you need to question the motivations of the victims.

Them chimney sweeps sure had it lucky !!

And dont get me started on how great life was for those kids in coal mines. Boy oh boy wowee !!
My forebears were privileged enough to flee persecution and famine in Ireland in the 19th century, only to come here and be exploited. Finally got their heads above water around halfway through the last century, due no doubt to their privilege.

Once again, when the 'white' people were enslaved, i do not believe that term existed yet. So once again, your colonial apologist tendency is coming to the fore as expected. Nonetheless, in today's era, several facts stands to be corrected. One major fact is that Aborigines have had their lives consistently interfered with throughout the history for a vareity of agenda benefitting the white australians at that time. The voice campagin and the modern day 'white' guilt, apology, compensation, equalisation are all there to paper over the past crime by the white australians. Once again, the aborigines have been the pawns in the whitemen's politics hence why most of the actual aborigines say no to such crap.

What? Are you seriously arguing that the way the referendum result varied from state to state is unrelated to varying attitudes toward Aboriginal people in the different states?
Where's the legislated voice?

Kevin Sheedy opens up on ‘shock’ allegations after being named in a racism class action

‘To be inferred as a racist person was very difficult for me to take.’

AFL legend Kevin Sheedy has spoken for the first time since being named in a landmark racism class action.

The class action lodged in the Victorian Supreme Court last month alleges North Melbourne’s Indigenous Krakouer brothers, Jim and Phil, were vilified by identities including former Essendon coach Sheedy in the 1980s.
