NO TROLLS Racism Bombshell Claim - Carlton and Essendon Named

Yes it's alleged. But is anyone actually disputing that the Krakouers and others were regularly racially abused during their careers? We can call them victims, and we don't need to question their motives.

Tonight the AFL has their dreamtime game. Every year the cameras pan to Sheedy who is celebrated as some sort of hero for what he did for Aboriginal players. I imagine this is sickening for anyone who thinks Sheedy was a perpetrator of abuse against them.
Sheedy invented Aboriginal footballers.

My forebears were privileged enough to flee persecution and famine in Ireland in the 19th century, only to come here and be exploited. Finally got their heads above water around halfway through the last century, due no doubt to their privilege.
I'd say that is roughly correct. Midway through the 20th century would be about the time that prejudices against Irish Catholics began to diminish in Australia, and they were afforded the same privileges of other white people. I have absolutely no doubt that in the 1950s the descendants of Irish Catholics were in a much more privileged position in Australia than Indigenous Australians. Let's be honest, that had probably been the case since the late 19th century at least, their position in society simply improved in relation to the WASPs.

Not to be pedant, and I agree with the jist of your statement, but slavery was outlawed in the British empire prior to Victoria’s reign from my memory. Otherwise, yes, wholeheartedly agree.
From a legislative perspective, but they also carved out any of the plantations operated by the British East India Company. And it was simply replaced with Indian indentured labour, which many have argued is simply slavery by another name.

BREAKING UPDATE:

I have no doubt that the racism occurred, and involved many more players than those named.

How on earth do you prove someone said something 40 years after the fact though?

If they have named clubs maybe it is more about actions and club culture? Again difficulty in proof

Shut this thread down. Stop giving this shit a platform.
As in giving racism a platform?
Or giving people complaining of historical racism a platform?

Surprised Chris Lewis wasn't invited to be a part of this.

Copped pretty horrendous abuse back in the day. Named Garry Lyon and Dermott Brereton as 2 offenders a few years ago.

Of course, they palmed it off as being 'different back then' and continued on with their plumb media gigs.

I seem to recall they both made sincere, public apologies and at least one, if not both, did so multiple times.

i've always noticed that the 2 clubs explicitly born from clubs outside of the vfl. fremantle from east fremantle and south fremantle and to an extent clarement. as well at port adelaide from port adelaide. have by far the most indigenous games played. and were born in the afl in 1995 and 1996.

there's even been times where they have fielded teams 50% indigenous. both on multiple occasions decades apart.

also, sheedy was a pioneer but he didn't invent anything really. sanfl, wafl and the northern territory had been integrated for a rather long time. my grandma reckons that my great grand fathers favourite player was some obscure indigenous footballer. no idea which one tbh. but i have a hazy childhood memory her saying so when the paper said he died.

something i've noticed from the discussion is the presumption that australia is a wasp society. whilst historically thats true. However, white australian with ancestory from the bitish isles is only 41% and if you remove the ones who arrived after WW2 thats even lower. 50% of australians have at least on parent whos an immigrant. I reckon you all show your age when you say that. the average 70 year old is surrounded by a majority british population. the average 20 year old has no idea what a wasp is.

The Catholic-Protestant issue isn't a real divide anymore, but race remains visually obvious and society isn't all integrated racially, especially when it comes to First Nations people.

Nothing comes out of it. Just stirs shit with innocent parties. The past complainants don’t talk. Ask current players how they feel about it and love forward.

Too bad your President pulled the pin. He would have left no stone unturned finding out who did it.

I'm not sure it was the pin he pulled. There will be no evidence that can be dredged up after 40 years.

Culture at the time ... perhaps. Culture 40 years later ... completely unrelated.
