Being proud of your heritage doesn't exactly mean you think it's the best nationality.

Think Winmar and Allen Christensen's tattoo.

I thought we were from one species, homo sapiens?

Race is a social construct
Exactly, so no need for any special rights or penalties against 'races'. Or being able to use an excuse of being from an oppressed race, since you are saying you've been oppressed by an imaginary concept. :p

You're really ramping up the sarcasm today, I like it!

Just out curiosity, do you consider black people with black pride tattoos racist?

Context is everything. In Western society, a statement of black pride is usually meant in opposition to black shame, while a statement of white pride is usually meant in opposition to black pride. This is because there has never really been any instances of white shame in our society; whites have always been the dominant "race".

As an illustration of this, the "racist" connotation applies to generalised expressions of "white", but not specific white ethnicities. It's not racist to claim Irish (or Celtic) pride, because Irish is not considered as an opposite of "black". It's still pride in a white ethnicity, but it doesn't carry the anti-black connotations which are a product of our Western context.

"Black pride" could be meant as racist, and "white pride" could me meant as simply being proud of a person's white heritage, but generally speaking, they don't.

I can't even make it out.. does it say Brown Pride? If so, that's a lol, because literally we all brown, just different shades.

What obstacles have Western World Caucasians had to overcome to be proud of? ...

How does race effect anyone in today's western world?

All have equal access to education, healthcare, work and social services. I know people of different races who have either made a good life or made a bad life for all sorts of reasons... it is their decisions, not race, that seal their fates.

Ohhh and as Tim Minchin sings: "only a ginger can call another ginger: 'ginger'" :)

Who's included when one speaks of "black pride"?

Africans (various)? Afro-Americans? Papua New Guineans? Aboriginals? Black Europeans?

They're all ethnically completely different, the only commonality being their color. So the expression infers that color in itself is a significant distinguishing characteristic of humans, therefore racist.

See discussions about patriotism.

Aboriginal Australia says hi and would like you to visit their brand new 700 bed teaching hospital in Arnhem Land.

Oh wait...

You're asking for trouble there. It's well known only whites can be racists and males only sexist.

Its true, white males are incredibly hard done by on this planet.

Makes me glad I'm an aboriginal woman, because I have it so easy in comparison to you.

Someone's been reading Ayn Rand.

Your post is absolute hogwash, btw.

Race is a social construct, but due to that construct, racism is very real.

Actually, nothing worst than racist girls

Guys I can just iron out or take down with a crowbar

No idea what to do with racist girls

send them back into the Kitchen? ;)

The context is really important. as a tattoo, 'white pride' isnt exactly Racist, though it certainly does nothing to Curb racism, Much like black pride tatts just makes the problem bigger.

however with the article, and further comments by the Poster, the guy sounds like a racist Knob. he certainly has all the cliche's of being racist, like "I'm not racist, I have aboriginal friends, and an aboriginal child".

What obstacles have Western World Caucasians had to overcome to be proud of? .

Well...

they conquered the quest of throwing the ring (the source of all power) back into the volcano

^ No wait, that was only part of fairytales :(

Or how about all the impressive feats achieved in Hollywood? Oh wait! That happened in movies, so it wasnt real :P

Back I go to watch "Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta"

The article speaks more on the worst paper in the world than the society we live in.

EDIT: Can't work out of/on/wtf that word should be.

It's funny how many white racists love to root black shielas though. I believe this was common in South Africa when the white Saffas would shag the "kaffirs" on the sly, and the guilt would mean they'd take it out on other kaffirs.

what do black people have to be proud of? every important scientific or cultural discovery in recorded history has been made by a white man, an asian or a middle easterner.

Rock and Roll is pretty good.

Blacks didn't really invent it. Without doubt blacks were the first bluesmen but even still they didn't invent the I, IV, V progression. Nor did they invent the minor pentatonic scale (or a six tone with the added flat 5t or flat 7th). They didn't invent dominant 7th chords, the fifth interval or the shuffle rhythm. All of those things went into blues and early rock, but they were all invented by white people. So who is borrowing from whom?

Guys like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino - on and on - have all pointed their fingers at Elvis and said he started it all. And Elvis never wrote a single song....

But there sure have been some great black rockers and blues players. Not much anymore though.

I find it weird that people are so ignorant of why black pride exists.

I find it more strange that white people think the achievements of other individual white people somehow reflect on them personally.

I guess there are just a lot of fools out there.

I guess a lot of white people hold on to the acievements of others personally the same way that a lot of blacks hold on to injustices perperatrated on others personally.

So you're arguing that racial injustice towards black people is a thing of the past?

I'd disagree with that completely.

Nope ....not at all. But when particular sub sections of community align themselves with other members of the community, sometimes, rightly and wrongly, they over identify and confuse the similarities. Does that make sense?
