Racquet Restringing

G'day folks,

Am looking at buying a reel of string as have tried numerous strings, and am convinced tecnifibre suits my game really well. Just looking at reel sizes, etc; was just after some answers. How many racquets would 200m of string cater for? Being a tennis coach myself, quite new at the gig; these are the type of questions I should know the answer to. Hopefully the good folk on BigFooty can help me out.

I think it's 40 foot for 1 racquet (+/- for head size) which is a bit over 12m. Divide that by 200 and you get about 16 racquets worth.

Do you have a stringing machine at home? Go to the American tenniswarehouse website- thats the best play to find info in their forums. Also they've got every type of string there and thats where I order my string from as the AUD is so high compared to the US$, the string is much cheaper ordering there than buying reels from here even with shipping included.

A reel of string is usually 200m- usually they say use 6m for the mains and 6 for the crosses. However usually I get away with using around 5.5 metres for the main and around 5 for the crosses. It really depends on the racquet- eg. If its an oversize racquet you'll have to use more string than a 90 sq inch. racquet for example. Also one-piece and 2 piece stringing makes a difference. Once you start stringing regularly you'll get a feel for how much string you'll need for a racquet.

Have you ever strang a racquet before? If you haven't it'll take a while to get used to it, stringing the crosses is definitely the hardest thing to learn. What Technifibre string are you using? I'm guessing its one of the multi's or Red Code? Anyway, if you got any more questions feel free to ask, I've been around some top strings in my time and do a bit of stringing myself so I know a bit.

I've got a uh Head Radical, pretty old model but is a well balanced racquet overall IMO.

Am thinking about getting a reel or two of that red code tecnifibre, have had a few hits with the strings on a few different racquets and love the ping.

I don't string racquets myself, firstly don't know how to. Secondly, it's probably a little too expensive, not sure how much it is; but I don't like reaching into my savings account!

Yeah Liquid Metal. I've had a look around also and tennis warehouse is certainly the cheapest. But I don't want to go buying some string that only strings a few racquets! How many racquets do you reckon it would string?

If you are using the racquet mainly for coaching, I wouldn't go Red Code -
pretty stiff string and doesn't play well compared to other poly strings in the market. Also using a full bed of poly for coaching could lead to arm issues, which is not good for coachs - try out a poly and syn gut hybrid.

Couple of suggestions for strings:
Kirschbaum Pro Line II (little extra than Red Code, and is a lot better string); and Signum Pro Poly Plasma (very popular string cause of it's cheaper cost, playability, and durability, and is a lot softer than red code).

I am a stringer so I deal with a lot of different racquets and string types. So 200m reel will do at least 16 full racquets as suggested. 12m will do most racquets, and it depends on the string pattern as well as the size of the head - my Rebel 95 (18x20 string pattern) needs 6.3m for the mains and 5.9m for the cross, yet my K90 needs about 10.6m for the entire bed strung in one piece.

See the Pro Shop at Boroondara Tennis Centre in Balwyn North, will look after coaches - are around $25 initially (if you supply the string) then $15 per restring if you are a regular customer.

I agree - they are f'in hopeless, and pretty darn expensive. everything just seems to hard for them. Curnows are probably worse though, dodgy chinese racquets at premium prices...

Prelli is the best from experience. May have limited range, but really know their stuff.

I used to go to Prelli when they had a shop at Boroondara Tennis Centre (was Camberwell back then). Still go there now as it's close, shop changed a few years ago to IT Tennis who has a better range IMO and really know there stuff on stringing and racquets - well the guys who work there on Friday and Saturday do anyway.

I find the american tennis warehouse site very good. Much cheaper if your order your string there than from Australia. Customer service at Prelli is very good but its pretty expensive there. I've got my own stringer so it's all good I just buy reels. Tennis warehouse Australia is rpobably the best place in Melbourne to buy reels of string I guess. If your just looking for restringing just go to most tennis coaches who have a restringer and they'll charge alot less.

Have played a few tournaments at Boroondara lately and have ran into some pretty stiff competition, but was more than competitive. Hoping to find the right string for me pretty soon.

Will try out their racquet restringing services and try out the strings mentioned above. Cheers.
