Like many others of my vintage, I grew up learning about cricket from Alan McGillivray's commentary. It was compulsory listening and nobody has been able to paint as precise a picture of what was going on in the middle, before or since. A number of years ago, I took exception to a remark from Peter Roebuck that I considered to be inflammatory and offensive to the extreme. Out of respect to the departed, I won't discuss what was said.

I complained to the ABC and questioned why people were allowed to make such comments on the radio. I was pretty much told that if I took offense to such comments, then maybe it best I not listen in future. So, I switched off ABC and true to my word, I have never gone back. I simply couldn't believe their attitude.

No surprise to me that they are run by idiots.

Not sure a lot of his actions deserve respect, to be honest. But it's a pretty appalling response from the ABC - surely it's better to either apologise or at least show some understanding to you and then do/say whatever they want after responding to you. PR 101 I would've thought.

Yep, that's pretty much how I viewed it. I didn't expect them to do much about it, but I couldn't believe they suggested I either like it or lump it. Something a little more conciliatory would have been more appropriate.

I rate Dean Jones' commentary. Sure, he's no Allan McGilvray, he loves talking about himself, and way he speaks sometimes makes him sound dumb, but at least he does homework on stats, the rules, and players from every country, which is more that can be said about other commentators.

Commentating a lot overseas obviously helps his knowledge of non-Aussies

I don't always agree with his opinions, but yes does his research and remains well in touch with the game with his involvement in coaching in Bangladesh & role as international commentator.

Ian Chappell has just started a new cricket radio show on Macquarie (3aw, etc). Just on 6pm Saturdays, I think.
And 'Stumps' is back on SEN at 6pm

The first post probably should be edited, because Triple M are out and SEN are in

Looking forward to hearing SEN's coverage. Triple M was painful and 3AW wasn't amazing. SEN have poached the best out of ABC.

Anybody know why MMM pulled the pin? I read something about them finding it too expensive which i cynically believe to be a cover up for shit ratings.

Anyone know who'll be on the ABC with Katich, Nannes and Whatley gone?
According to the ABC Cricket magazine, Nannes is still part of the coverage, with Chris Rogers, Ed Cowan and Mitchell Johnson. Harsha Bhogle and Alison Mitchell joining Jim on ball-by-ball.

Triple M’s coverage last year was great it would have been nice to see what it would have been like in its 3rd year.

My understanding is that CA was asking way too much money as MMM is hugely advertising friendly plus the fact that their three main callers of JB, Isha and KoK all signed big TV deals were big reasons for them to pull the pin. If you believe the reports they dominated the ratings

not even just those three. Gilly, Junior, Howie, and Neroli Meadows are all feature heavily in Fox Crickets coverage aswell.

Triple M are also trying to tip as much money as they can into their network shows and cutting back on local content and sport. Putting resources into content which is mainly on during off ratings also doesn't make great business sense.

Hard to know with the ratings, as with the AFL coverage all stations claim to be number 1.

My Howie avoidance strategy entails putting Macquarie Sports Radio on. Tonight, David Morrow has been doing ball by ball commentary and he's not in the same league as Tim Lane and Bruce Eva when it comes to doing ball by ball commentary.

So, who's listening to what? At this stage, I'm definitely favouring Macquarie, with Ian Chappell, McGrath, Lehman, Brad Hodge, John Embury, Tom's very Moody, etc

Okay, definitely not listening to them. Ian Chappell is the biggest imbecile in cricket.

ABC was decent from the first couple of sessions I listened to. Harsha, Jim, Alison are all conssumate pro's and I've enjoyed Dizzy and Ed Cowan so far.

Listened to SEN most of the day and really enjoyed it. Whateley is fine and I think Katich, Mitchell and Huddo are great. Flem bearable. Then again enjoyed the bit of the ABC I heard in the car - Gillespie was in and have always enjoyed his work, has insight and a bit of quirkiness that isn't contrived.
