To be fair to Jim, he did commentate that moment quite well imho.
Doesn't excuse the many other issues with his commentary that we have.
Any good commentator would be the first to say that such moments make it very easy. It's the consistent mistakes and bizarre tangents that clearly mark his decline.
I remember when Blofeld was past his best and during the Ashes he mixed Chris Rogers up with the late Phil Hughes and it was the most awkward of brief pauses before he corrected himself but it was indicative that he was no longer up to ball-by-ball commentary.

Yes, the test comes in the difficult moments, that's when a really good commentator shows their worth. Also, they pre-script the big moments (obviously with a few alternatives depending on the result) with all the relevant stats to hand and superlatives at the ready.

Keeping Maxwell on for another summer would just trash the ABC cricket reputation further and would drive listeners away.
Mitchell would be better than Middlemas. Although she might not be available to be the lead caller due to potentially having media commitments elsewhere, as in 2023/24.
Bit of a shame the ABC can't make a 'Godfather' like offer to Tim Lane or Gerard Whately to take over the ABC's cricket coverage as lead commentator once Jim Maxwell retires.

Indeed. Lane is also well past it and has become an increasingly insufferable twat over the last 25-odd years.
Whateley is also annoying and I would prefer that he stay away. He is too melodramatic, too fond of the sound of his own voice and prone to pontificate. Enough already about Winx, please.
As others have observed, the cult of personality has become a problem again with the ABC cricket coverage. Getting a high-profile name to lead the commentary and be the personification of ABC cricket is not the way to go. It's better to get a capable lead and a sound team of support callers and analysts. Please keep Ric Finlay on as the stats wizard.
