So I needed to vent, and rather than muddy up other threads that are more discussions, I thought this would be better - Mods feel free to merge/delete if you want - But I just got a text and it sent me into a rage.


So some context - I went to the 2014 Round 1 Geelong v Adelaide match at Kardinia Park, which is over two years ago now.

Since then I've been getting random emails from Geelong trying to get me to become a Geelong member and all that stuff. That hasn't bothered me, I just deleted them.

Last week I got a text message on my phone from 'Chris Scott' asking me to make sure I join up for the 2016 season. Hmm ok, your starting to spam my phone now, I should probably reply to stop these, but I just deleted it.

But just now I got a text from 'Dangerfield' and it says 'Nothing better than beating the Hawks! Join me and the boys for a BIG 2016. Sign up Now'

you should text back saying you would really like to talk to danger before you become a member, and then post his mobile number.

How does one get in a position where they have your mobile? Did you have to give that to get a ticket or similar?

yes I made the mistake of buying away showdown tickets through them - so I guess i'm one of their passionate members ?

Correct. When you get to the end of your purchase, there's a whole heap of tick boxes - most are agreeing to the agency's T&C's, privacy etc, but there's usually one where you opt in to receiving marketing from the promoter (ie home club).

It's similar to how low cost airlines slip in their ancillary costs etc.

These days I believe it's illegal to pre-tick the opt-in box but always good to check exactly what's been ticked, what you're ticking etc.
