The other thing to remember is, its only a good deal for the Eagles if we use the home ground advantage and actually win the game. If we we don't make the most of it, and lose, then its a bloody expensive loss.

Its still a big risk for the Eagles to take from that POV

It's only a risk if no one turns up. If 36,000+ attend the game you'll either break even or turn a profit.

Everyone seems to be missing one important point in all this. I seriously don't think the AFL are going to cooperate with any ideas that help out Norths. They had a plan to help them out of their trouble (relocating) and it was strongly rejected so I can't see any favours coming their way. The request will be denied.

Predictable Freagle response

Predictable nothing reply from someone with absolutely no idea.

Try adding something instead of stamping your feet and having a cry like a three year old.

Like I said before, there is absolutely nothing stopping our club from chasing up a similar deal. There is no disadvantage in that regard.

The disadvantage will only come about if West Coast secure the deal and we continue to sit on our hands when the likes of the Doggies and Melbourne are screaming out for extra coin.

It's really not an Eagles/Freo issue. These deals shouldn't be allowed anywhere in the comp. (But if 1 team should never be allowed to buy games, it should be the Eagles because they are hewn of the devil's rock)

And who are you referring to when you say "our club"?

I think in 2010 when the Eagles scrape into 8th place and relegate us to 9th, by the 1 charity North home game win, a few more Freo fans will see this for the farce that it is.

And who are you referring to when you say "our club"?

It's not an Eagles Freo issue? Clearly you've made it so, but as I have said countless times before, dumbshits like yourself seem to kick up a stink when the boys down the road do anything. Even when we have the same options available to us.

This petty infatuation with all things West Coast typify what is wrong witht the Freo fan base, there are 14 other clubs to lock horns with, but at the slightest cue we attack the coasters. Why?

Does this not permeate through to our playing group.

I dont have an issue with the proposal, if the club has anyone with a brain following the precedent set by the coasters I hope we can snare a similar deal.

What I'd like more? To see us on the front foot, setting a precedent now and then.

It is the Eagles who are currently in talks with North isn't it? If it was Brisbane I'd be just as concerned.

The reason we attack "the coasters" is they are our local rival. The coasters indeed, you Freagle

God, what a dumbshit. You've been shown up as a muppet and now your only defence is to call me a freagle because I use the term Coasters, instead of weagles or some other pathetic nickname.

You're doing well.

Mundy, what would you like us to do? Make enquries as to whether North would like to sell two games, or approach other clubs in a similarly parlous position? That'd be popular. I'd suggest a polite "Go and get f**ked" would be the response.

I'd like us to get on the front foot and try and kybosh all sold games played at the away teams nominal home ground. That'd be a start.

Really? Which one? The Melbourne (finished 14th) vs Brisbane game at the Gabba or the Bulldogs (finished last) vs Sydney game at the SCG? Would either of the winners lost had they been played at the correct home ground?

Who knows, but Brisbane would have been a lot more likely to lose to Melbourne at the MCG than they were at the Gabba.
Had that game been played in Melbourne and the home team won, we would have finished 4th.

Which is a hell of a difference.

Really valuable contribution to the discussion. Coasters is just a very gay nickname. I call them the Eagles

I'm getting sick of the paranoid Freo fans.

Well im sick of seeing gandhi freo fans who have a problem with hatred for other teams.

Do none of you realise 99% of the eagles fan base and hierachy would much rather we didn't exist?

There is no such things as friends in football. So lets stop trying to make them or act like we have them. The club should act like a bunch of carefree w***ers and make every opportunity for the eagles to raise their profile/revenue and absolute pain in the arse for them. God knows they would do the same for us.

The reason why people constantly bring up the eagles you fence sitters is because they are the ones we directly fight with for REVENUE...the very thing they are trying to raise more of

"Fight and you may die. Run and you
will live at least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell
our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take
our freedom!"

Whoooooaaaa ease up tough guy!

I think some people are just trying to take a more long range perspective, one where you might actually come out on top.

So what? For all that, they are powerless. A toothless tiger. The AFL holds all the power, and we would have to be bankrupt for a decade before they even considered ending the FFC. What West Coast thinks about us doesn't matter!

Similarly, what we think about West Coast doesn't matter either. It doesn't make us any more successful. I'd like us to use our present 12 games at home advantage to at least make the finals. We should be making the finals every second year. But we don't. That deserves more Freo fan attention than whatever silly things those dicks up the road do.

Got to love this quaint little notion that the Eagles are the bad guys, talk about a small town mentality.

Try living interstate for a while, Dockers are viewed with a little pity and a lot of contempt. This is nothing to do with the Eagles but everything to do with our club and our performance.

Many supporters of other clubs wish we didnt exist:
a. because it is bad for their gate figures,
b. it woud reduce interstate traveling,
c. we havent achieved anything.

Winning games is the thing that matters, worrying about WCE is a waste of time and energy.

agreed
but people need to understand that to over clubs freo came into the afl without achieving much 14 years later

if we need to rely on the financially strapped afl clubs to sell us games to be successful then we have far bigger things to worry about.... it annoys me a little that nortth went straight to west coast, as they already get a comical amount of favouratism from the WA media and them getting an extra game will only add to this, otherwise though, we should be more concerned with getting our underperforming over paid players to do what they are paid well for

I agree with the suggestion that we shouldn't be worrying about what the Eagles do, but not entirely. We have to know what the Eagles are doing in our local market, just as Sydney have to keep an eye on what's happening in NSW and Brisbane in Queensland. It shouldn't be an all consuming obsession however and those who say the Eagles are a malevolent force always trying to keep Freo down are being paranoid.

In regards to Freo's existence, you could make a case that many Victorian supporters would prefer that no interstate teams exist. Through the lazy fug of nostalgia they'd prefer that Fitzroy was still at Brunswick St, Souths at the Lakeside and the best WA and SA players played for their clubs. They yearn for the return of milk bars, duffle coats, full strength beer in cans, biffo and suburban footy on a mudheap on a Saturday afternoon, read the Sunday Age (or the Truth) on Sunday and watch the Winners at 6pm after Countdown. As I do sometimes.

Melbourne will have a terrible crowd this week; then again they had a terrible crowd last week against North. It's an indictment on Victorian clubs, not us.
We're a convenient scapegoat for misguided experiments and other clubs half-heartedness and fickle support, as the article below from a couple of years ago shows:

Mr Lennon upsets Freo
Martin Flanagan

Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon has managed to upset the Fremantle Dockers in his desperate bid to hold together his politically inspired footy-only-in-the-north AFL deal.

As the Saints march out and the Hawks fly in, Premier appears to have been putting a very large ham fist into the Dockers.

“This week, Freo was seriously upset. Offended, in fact. A story appeared in the West Australian, which was re-run in The Age, saying that the Dockers were no longer welcome at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium, with Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon lobbying to exclude the team because of poor attendances.

Premier Lennon has a concept he calls “the new Tasmania”. I took particular notice of the concept of the new Tasmania when he enunciated it because he was also saying my brother wasn’t welcome in it.

The Dockers didn’t ask to have games scheduled in Tasmania (the first time they played there, they were nine hours in transit), but once they were sent there, according to Chief executive Cameron Schwab, they sought to enter the spirit of it.

“Tassie’s a great footy state,” he said. They sent players on clinics, they sought to lend support when the miners were trapped underground at Beaconsfield, they formed a partnership with one of the top clubs in northern Tasmania, now called the Burnie Dockers.

Freo pointedly declined to publicly criticise the Launceston stadium after the fiasco this year when the final siren was not heard by one of the central umpires.

But that politeness has now given way to anger

“The Premier of the state has trashed our brand after we’ve done everything we can to embrace something that was always difficult to do.”
His statements were echoed by the president of Burnie, Shane Walker, who said he was “ropeable”. “The Dockers have been sensational for football on the north-west coast.”

Flanagan alludes to the problem facing AFL in Tasmania … the politically
motivated exclusive siting of AFL in the north; and crowds for Freo of around 14,000 when 18,000 are needed to break even.

Presumably, Premier Lennon did not leak the story to the press so he cannot be blamed for speaking dismissively of Freo in public. But Freo is due some respect. It has got values. Meanwhile, I will follow with interest the place of footy in the new Tasmania.

Agree, I think Freo's focus should be on out manouvering the Eagles rather than bemoaning the successes they have. Why didnt Freo think of the idea first, and if they did why didnt they push for it before the Eagles?

How else can we take advantage of being in a two team state?

This is the perception I am talking about. While we are easybeats we can be a punching bag for other supporters to bag out. Only on field success will change this.
