I used to enjoy inviting the local Jehovas Witnesses in for a long chat over tea and scones. It took them about 10 visits over three years to work out that my interest in their religion was purely scholarly.
You mean they've didn't twig when they saw the upside down crucifix?

So is it only Riloli that has congratulated Rance on social media still?

Maybe the specifics of the rumour may be off the mark but one player throwing out a standard well done post a couple of weeks after Rance announced his retirement is still a massive red flag. If you have spent any time on the socials you would realise this is a massive snub.

Note I many be wrong in that more players have posted congratulations over the past couple of weeks?

Could well have been because there was some thought that he might return as the club has not removed him from the list.

Since then things gave changed with him and his wife separating which may have ended any chance of him returning as he commits to trying to repair that part of his life.

As he said in his announcement he committed 100% to his football career, and that may well have caused the issues in his marriage as JW can seperate if one partner feels that the other is harming their spiritual connection with God.

Georgia may well have told him if he doesn't retire she is leaving and he was trying to sort that out but she left which is why the sudden retirement happened.

Just because the papers reported the separation a week after his retirement doesn't mean it happened the day before. It could have happened earlier, but was kept quiet.

As for the players they may well have been giving Rance some time and space to deal with his marriage issues before offering him congratulations for his career.

I'm not sure if your private life is falling apart you'd be in the mood for mates congratulating you on your career. Hence the comments made by Cotchin about the boys always being there for him, which wouldn't have been said if something untoward had happened.

Is this the first player to do so?
Second, Naish posted something the day he retired.

As I mentioned earlier given Rance is going through the breakdown of his marriage maybe his mates gave decided that congratulations posts on social media were not in order.

Also Cotchin saud that they boys would always be there for Rance which suggests they gave plenty of respect for him and his career/influence on the culture of the club.

They would be retirement messages congratulating him on his career. Why wouldn’t you post that just because he’s separated?

He’s saying maybe he has to retire but didn’t really want to. Who knows really but the whisper about he and his missus splitting has been about for months so people are speculating he’s thrown it in to focus on the Jovo faith and his marriage.

If you're going through a marriage breakdown would you really want mates patting you on the back and offering up congratulations or would you prefer to have some space and privacy.

If I retired from my job..I wouldn’t mind at all. It’s a different thing, you’re not patting him on the back for separating.

So your private life is falling apart, but you'd still want mates offering up congratulations.

Interesting choice.

Personally I wouldn't be in the mood to have my mates heap praise on me, when my career may well have been what caused my marriage to fall apart.

Instead of me reading your posts how about you point out where you pointed out JH are encouraged to not receive praise.

Before someone else posted it and you claimed it's astounding ignorance to not know it of course.

I was a JW up until the age of 18 and practically my entire family are still very commited JW's. So a few things......

JW's are discouraged to have a public profile. They believe that they should remain 'no part of this world'. As a result they refrain from a number of civic related roles and responsibilities including many types government work, voting, the police and defence forces.

JW's are also strongly encouraged to avoid 'bad associations'. This basically means avoiding associating with anyone who is not also a JW. Now obviously most JW's have to work or attend school. Therefore this is applied socially. There is a bit of variation across the JW's on this one. For me this meant I was unable to go to anyone's house after school or on the weekend or even make contact on the telephone. I was not allowed to play sport outside of the school system. Some are a bit more relaxed on this issue, however some also felt that my sporting pursuits at school were questionable.

In light of these two beliefs the idea of a JW playing high profile sport becomes rather interesting. Rance would (most likely) have found the whole situation to be very difficult. As an AFL player he would have had to spend an enormous amount of time with these 'bad associations'. Not just training and playing, but socialising
and celebrating. Further these associates would have no doubt exposed him to things that would have been challenging to his faith. Not to mention his position as a media personality which is questionable considering the belief of remaining 'no part of this world'.

The workaround here is to never get 'baptised' and remain in limbo as a JW. That way you don't get held to as high a standard, and unless you blatantly/ continue to break the more black and white rules you can still associate with the church. I have no idea if this is the case with Rance but I suspect it might have been with another high profile JW, Serina Williams. Although in her case I can think of many reasons why she wouldn't be considered/ remain a JW in good standing.

Now in regard to divorce it is true that infidelity is the only justification. To be even more accurate infidelity is the only justification to re marry. There are grounds for seperation and possibly divorce which include physical and mental abuse, a partner demanding their spouse engage in ungodly conduct, and also when a spouse tries to turn their partner away from the religion. It is very common for a seperation / divorce to occur when one spouse leaves the church or even starts speaking out against the church. If the partner who remains in the church wants to then marry someone else it needs to be confirmed that one of the parties has been unfaithful.

Feel a bit funny posting this but to the best of my knowledge/ experience what I have said is accurate.

I honestly don't think the lack of love for Rance on the socials can be put down to his JW beliefs. Yes the JW's don't believe in heaping praise on their members for 'worldy' pursuits, but that's not to say it doesn't happen or that it might get Rance in hot water. A dozen or so 'congrats on a great career mate, love you dude' type posts would hardly be out of order. By the way the JW's can insta with the best of them believe me ;) #livingmybestlife #loveyasall #arebntmykidsbeautuful

Also as one poster mentioned it is highly unlikely that the entire Richmond team would be a cross the intricacies of his religion. Sure they might be aware of the major things like no Christmas or Birthdays, high moral standards, door knocking etc... But that's about it I would have thought.

This is very helpful. Thank you.

I imagine AR was under quite a bit of social pressure from other JW members about his very public sporting career.

I also imagine the wife probably copped a fair bit of flak as well.

I imagine this placed a fair bit of presure on them. Other family or JW members might have been giving them a hard time for a while now.

It was due to his wife and people in the church that he nearly threw it in back in 2015, I could be wrong but after reading his post I recall back then mention that he wasn’t getting baptised until he was finished with football.
All I know for certain is the rumour is absolute BS

Yep give a mate some time and space to gather themselves then say thanks for being a brother

Well done to you RT - at least you have stayed reasonably balanced in the face of a barrage of idiotic commentary from self-indulgent simpletons.

Frankly, I think it is very weird how some people on here seem to think that it is their right, nay even their civic duty, to belch out half baked nonsensical theories about another person's personal life.

What the hell gives any of you that right?

What is even worse is that they seem to think that calling the reputation of others into question is a fine and noble thing to do. What??

I am by no means a Tigers fan but to turn this into some team based fan nonsense is utterly ridiculous - juvenile playground dross.

Some of you people ought to stop and reflect and be thankful that it is not you or, your family members, who are being subjected to similar filth.

I can't think of anything to say other than - if you are promoting - or giving support to this drivel - you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

Horrid vacuous little creatures.

scoman has explained it all pretty well including the baptism 'workaround' and the lower 'standard' that entails.

I wouldnt be surprised if he is under pressure to be baptised and goes and gets baptised shortly to win his wife back.
Just a theory at this stage...

Nah, you're just a piss weak by product of our news cycle.
Wow, the anger is strong in this one. What a pathetic response to a reasonable post.

Take a breathe of air. Nothing to do with the news cycle.

It obvious to all that it is EXTREMELY odd that there is a dearth of wellwishers regarding Rances retirement. It is so obvious. Why are you denying this ??

WHY does no one like Rance enough to wish him well on his retirement from his outstanding career ??????????

It's obvious to everyone but those with an irrational investment in this, i.e. some Richmond supporters.

We'll find out why soon, I suspect.
