Definitely 1988 at Waverley. It rained. Very untypical for Arctic Park. Johnno has his ribs broken early in the game.

Yep, that was when our premiership dreams were sunk, then and there, that season. I blame myself, missed the game as girlfriend somehow talked me into going to something else. Never forgiven myself. We played Hawks twice in finals series the previous two seasons and even 1982 we played them twice. We probably meet 8 times in the 1980's finals. We would have won about 5 of them but not played a final together for 30 years now.

In the VFL / AFL era (post 1897), Carlton has finished on top of the ladder 17 times.... Of these occasions on 6 times we missed out on the Flag.

Only one of these was in the post WW2 era. In which year did we come top but fail to win the flag?

Lost both finals by small margins.

It was a strange season. We won the first 7 games, lost the next 5, won the next 9 & then drew the last game. Some would argue that we were due for a loss, but the finals was not a good time for it to happen.
Was this the final series when North beat us by a point at Waverley?

That's the one. I remember listening to it on the radio & it seemed every time we went forward in the last quarter, Malcolm Blight marked the bloody thing. I was heartily sick of Blight by the end of that season.

I was at both games. Literally pinched both. If you look closely at the footage from Princes Park you can see my footy record travelling almost the same distance as Blight’s kick. I was bloody filthy. I think it’s the origin of my hatred for the Kangaroos. Campaigners.

Artists on the 4th floor used to airbrush a random pic from a reserves game.

Was always a big secret.

Walked in in the boss one day, pic in hand with his little magnifying glass.

He went classic newspaper bunta.

I adjourned to the Phoenix to collect my thoughts.

I loved that thing - can't find a mention of it anywhere.
You need to use Trove. A search engine provided by the National Library of Australia. It has digitised the newspaper publications for Australia. I’m certain you’ll find Spot the Ball, and with a little luck, Little Sport.

Is this a modern take of the Spot The Ball competition that used to appear in The Sun News Pictorial?
