Not sure on what you're trying to ask here but if it weren't for Carlton Collingwood wouldn't exist so if you were trying to appreciate Collingwood then this might be why.

Deep at the heart of it, all the traditional clubs know that having the other traditional clubs strong on the field is important for the overall health of the game. Less so these days but historically relevant. It's why Eddie McGuire would almost openly barrack for us on commentary in our darkest years. Made me feel sick.

No one got the Answer here it is before the VFL competition Geelong, Melbourne, South Melbourne , Fitzroy, Collingwood and Essendon all broke away from the VFA formed a new group to be called VFL as their was no hope for Aussie Rules in the colony. Collingwood suggested Carlton and St Kilda to join. South Melbourne agreed on St Kilda, but didn't want Carlton they question it had a feeble record that year and didn't even have a footy ground. Essendon said a new ground Princess Park was being set up by the colonial government. Collingwood then said Surely Carlton has a great record will surely use the ground. They were sick of Richmond, North Melbourne, Footscray, Williamstown and Port Melbourne Hooligans. Collingwood also suggested to count the total scores not just goals. Geelong came up with the idea of playing clubs twice 14 Rounds and then a final series.

Collingwood simply returned the favor Carlton gave them in 1892 when they sought admission to the VFA itself.

Collingwood had only been able to schedule 17 matches and required 18 to qualify for the league and be admitted. Carlton secretary Jack Melville cancelled a game against South Ballarat, fixtured in another game against Collingwood - including allowing Collingwood to keep the gate money - and Collingwood were officially entered into the VFA.

Thus, if not for Carlton, Collingwood wouldn't have been admitted.

Despite the rivalry - or perhaps because of it - the clubs have a history of looking out for one another.

Here's one for SpiritOfCarlton and The Blueseum and anyone else as nerdy as me.

I was watching some footage of one of games from the 90's when 'Big Red' Lance Whitnall was running amok in our forward half. Got to thinking how many redheads I could come up with who have played in the navy blue - ie on the senior/rookie list at some stage (not U19's).

I came up with 22, with another 3 I'm not sure of but think they are. Anyone want to have a crack....
