Just reading this. The older bit make me think someone before my time but someone with a famous name at club and named John in some manner.
If John Nicholls was adopted and changed names I am sure would have heard that by now due to how famous he is. So my next thought is John James. Still a little famous too, but far back enough for most of us to know little about. So clicked on his name for google search and children names hint this almost certainly going to be him. So my best guess is John James. ?
I think Jimmy Barnes was born James Swann but he took on his adopted Dad's name as considered him more of a father than his own biological father. But his older brother did not change his surname and still known as John Swann. I guess it is some early family stuff like this that will be part of John James family history ?

hmm. my last guess Much older than Jon McCormick and much younger than Big Nick. I am done for Jon names so well try Jon Dorotich but not confident at all as fairly sure he has a relative here and they would have got it themselves before now, I would have thought. Sounds like I going down wrong path assuming it is some John or Jon player.

The name you know him best by doesn’t translate to or from John or Jonathan.
But that doesn’t mean he’s detached from that name.
hmmm. damn, this is a head **** if it is the Dominator. He is adopted so I should remember his birth name given he is my favourite all time player but forgotten it. Have a feeling now, Kelly was in it somewhere.

Was there. Lost by over 100 points that day. I went to the game by myself as I was meeting some friends. The outer was packed. We were copping a hiding in the reserves as well when the umpire made a questionable decision. Robbo was unimpressed and shouted some abuse at the man in white. Suddenly I was summoned by my mates who were in the crowd and some distance away.

Definitely 1988 at Waverley. It rained. Very untypical for Arctic Park. Johnno has his ribs broken early in the game.
