Why's that? Were they just not able to find a decent sponsorship that they had to essentially sell their name to Toyota?

I'm not certain (some of the Crows fans may know, crow28, fancyscum, _Damo_) but I'd say starting a club from scratch wasn't cheap.

Also, remember that the expansion clubs of the 1980's and 1990's didn't have four years of TAC Cup, VFL and preparation plans like Gold Coast and GWS, they were officially formed and named less than a year before playing

And then this recording from the AFL Centenary Ball uses the tune of the current theme song and still refers to them as the 'Camry Crows'

It was official alright! Due to their quick start up time they didn't have a theme song to start with. I think it was Andrew Jarman who started the whole "Here we go, here we go, here we go" song after their first victory, and they made a pretty crappy theme song out of it complete with over-the-top crass commercialism thrown in.

I was only 3 when the Crows started, and didn’t start supporting them till 1995 when I was 7, so my knowledge of those very early days are limited to second or third hand information. Integrating sponsors into club names is nothing that out of the ordinary though. Caltex Socceroos and Vodafone Warriors are two that immediately spring to mind, and plenty of other AFL clubs have heavily involved their sponsors in their marketing over the years (“SGIO Go Eagles Go”, anyone?).

That cartoon logo with the Camry at the top was our secondary logo. All clubs had them in the 90s (and IMO, were the best versions of the AFL mascots there has been), and the Camry only appeared above it on some occasions, not always. The official shield logo never had a Camry variant.

As for the song, well yep it was definitely cringeworthy. Its also so 90s. The story that I’ve heard says that when we nearly (absolutely should have) made the GF in 1993, they realised how bad that song would be on GF day so decided to come up with a better one. It was written by Bill Sanders who was our inaugural CEO. Here is a video of him explaining how it came about, although it leaves out any mention of the first song and suggests we had it from day one, which is a bit cheeky.



The current song had a few different recordings in the early years, before finally settling on the current version around the turn of the century. Still the best recording is the one from the 97/98 Grand Finals, but there doesn’t seem to be a copy of it anywhere anymore.

Come on, its no secret that Rucci hates the Crows. The man himself doesn’t even try to pretend he doesn’t, so theres no point in the description trying to pretend otherwise. Its clearly something that the people within the club found humourous and held onto as a laugh.

Now, is the piece itself museum worthy? Probably not, but I’d suggest it has a whole lot more relevance to our club than a USB stick with a club logo on it.

Duuuuuuuuude what is so hard to understand? I’ve never said we didn’t have Toyota/Camry references in our song. Quite the opposite. Calo said we had a “literal ad” in our song, which I took to be talking about the whole voice over telling people to go to their local Toyota dealers or whatever. That part wasn’t sung by players and wasn’t played as part of the song after a win. The video you linked is quite clearly a Toyota advert that utilises the Crows song as part of it. If you want to get into semantics about the Camry word appearing and the jingle, go right ahead, but I never claimed they weren’t part of the official song.
