did mommy/daddy tell you a republic is a bad idea so now you think a republic is a bad idea?
No I've always held that view. As I've said before I think we need to respect our British establishment and the royal family and continue to be part of the Commonwealth. It's going to cost a lot for us to change to a Republic Any way. If Australia becomes a republic I'm fleeing the country.

You guys can ask me what ever you want on any topic or issue. I will answer it honestly.
Is it okay to let off fireworks in the backyard if you give the neighbours a 10 minute warning prior to ignition?

you’ve always held that view... from what age, like 6?

You’re 12 dude - you haven’t even had the chance to go into any sort of depth in any sort of political/global topic. You haven’t even hit Year 10 S&E yet. But hey, whilst we’re here you give a lot of opinions but not a lot of reasons why.

Why should Australia remain a part of the Commonwealth? Why should we “respect” our British establishment and most importantly - why in the blue hell do you intend on fleeing the country if we became a Republic?

I mean, she looks good for her age don’t get me wrong and she was a looker back in the day but please don’t tell me it’s all because you have a hard on for ‘Liz. If anything it explains the competition mascot...

I love the queen and the royal family but most importantly the Commonwealth. I will only continue remain in Australia while we are a commonwealth nation. The commonwealth built our fabulous country and it would be a big shame and disrespectful to the United Kingdom If we left.

IIRC, you were telling us about your Under 14's footy win last year. ;)

That wasn't what I was asking. I was asking why - as in, what is the reasoning? The Commonwealth for the most part has very little discourse in how Australia is run today, outside of the Governor-General who only acts when necessary. If Australia became a republic, I don't think all that much would really change about our day to day lives.

We're a pretty damn self-sufficient nation, and our economy is more reliant on Asian nations than Britain.

Yep. Post WWII we’ve managed to really carve out our own identity and independence from the commonwealth. We are better allies now with the US, and the important trade partners ware within our own region, not the UK. Queen Liz and all our British based traditions won’t go anywhere, but as a modern multicultural society we share a lot more in common with the US than the UK and should follow in their footsteps (independence wise that is).

It’d literally be a shifting of positions at federal level, a nice new flag and something to replace Queen Liz on the dollar. Nothing immediately different in day to day life.

Figured I’ll post this here. Needed to tell someone but have next to no friends outside this website who give a rats arse. Three weeks ago I started Weight Watchers with Mum. Not as a New Years Resolution or anything, but rather the time to take things up a notch. I’ve struggled with weight for my whole life, and although I am fit, I’ve got a lot of gut that needs to go. This week I officially hit my 5% goal (meaning I’ve lost 5% of the Weight I want to lose) which equalled roughly 5 kgs. I’m lighter than I have been since this time last year. Not something many people would think as a achievement, but something I’m proud of and needed to vent it somewhere.

Yes we would lose competing in the Commonwealth Games which could threaten the games itself, and we would lose our connection with England

Is not being in the Commonwealth Games such a big deal? It's sport, unless you're involved in it directly it's unlikely that it will dramatically change our lives. India still competes in the Commonwealth Games and it's a Republic. Why can't we?

Also as everyone has said since World War 2 we have a greater connection with the US and even Asia than that of Britain. We even have the ANZUS treaty which binds us into cooperating with the USA in the event of military conflict. If we were to become a Republic I'm pretty certain it wouldn't be that much of a deal to Britain- the British Empire is pretty much dead already so it's not like we'd be having a war of independence or anything. They don't need us and at the moment we don't really need them.

China, Russia and the USA don't compete in the Commonwealth Games despite the fact that they're the powerhouses when it comes to the Olympics and we don't place very well in the Olympics, so how does us leaving threaten the games? Besides, we still have the Olympics to compete in.

You argue against a republic though saying that it costs a lot of money, how much money do you think a Commonwealth games costs?

32 out of 53 nations at the last Commonwealth Games were republics.

Once a nation becomes a republic they just have to re-apply to be a member again. This has no affect on their republic status nor does it place the Queen back in power within that nation. It is just like being a member of the G20 or NATO where you have links to the group and the nations within the group have closer ties but that is it.

Congrats mate. That is a big achievement to lose 5 kgs in about 3 weeks.

Mr Turnbull is only trying to become PRESIDENT Thats why he wants us to become a republic
Or he has an equal amount of power right now anyway and he just wants what's better for our country.

I guess the frustration comes from the fact that you are just spouting talking points with zero reasoning attatched and so it doesn't come across like you truly hold these opinions.

Yeah you’re welcome to voice your opinion but if you’re just talking shit with zero substance to back it up - why would I respect that?

If I said we should go back to black slavery and didn’t provide a single good reason for that (there isn’t one, just so we’re all clear here) - would everyone here just have to wear it and go “okay yeah cool that’s a solid idea!”

Probably. It is an internet forum after all.
