standard stuff, a lot of bigger manufacturers historically don’t produce themselves and outsource to local companies.

Some huge news here. Could be interesting to see what the AFL reserves teams in the NEAFL do. Perhaps we could see them take on affiliations with the standalone clubs in the NEAFL. Sydney Uni Swans, Canberra Giants, Aspley/Redland Lions and Gold Coast Sharks. Those are just a few ideas anyway and the clubs might just enter the VFL with the same identity.

Would be Awesome to see Brisbane enter as Fitzroy and Sydney to enter as South Melbourne, but would not make sense logistically at all. Using their jumpers could be an option though.

It would be strange for South Melbourne and Fitzroy to play their home matches in Sydney and Brisbane respectively, but given that just under half of their matches would be in Victoria it wouldn't be too out of place. It would be fantastic for both the Swans and Lions fans based in Victoria to see South Melbourne and Fitzroy competing once again (in Fitzroy's case, in an AFL-sanctioned competition), and for all footy fans to have a slice of history reinstated

The South Melbourne 'V' jumper with red or white shorts, and the red Fitzroy jumper with blue or white shorts would be excellent kits for either side

OMG. I was coming here to post that exact same thing. It can easily be done like we see with Western Bulldogs team being called Footscray in the VFL.

I have a few fond memories of watching the VFL as a kid back in the early 00's and seeing all these teams I'd never seen before, and it'd be sad to see them go.

yeah, if you were to do that, you'd have to actually base the teams there. which is why I said it didn't make logistical sense, flying half your squad to Melbourne every week.

Yeah definitely feel like the standalone clubs are done for. Specifically Coburg and Frankston, but I’m sure Port, Willy and Werribee will struggle with the travel costs too. Same deal with the QLD and NSW clubs, I don’t think many will join given how many teams dropped out of the NEAFL for travel reasons. It’s basically a death sentence for anyone who isn’t an AFL affiliate.

Surely the standalone clubs could transition into local leagues? I don't know enough about their finances to understand whether this would be viable or not, though.

I'm sure with the facilities they have on offer, transitioning into the local leagues they wouldn't have any issues recruiting locally, this doesn't help a senior side but definitely fills your reserves/ clubbies and kickstarts you. really depends on junior programs they've already got set up too, I know coburg have a junior club in the EDFL that they would already start using as a feeder. The biggest issue would probably be (assuming they don't own their grounds) how long they could keep their facilities for before costs are too high for them to maintain. Assuming a club would struggle for a few years in local footy financially until there's a junior program and a developed 'fan' base, you'd assume their facilities are costing them significantly more than your average local club on rent from council. how long could werribee hold on to their ground before falling over?

I think the northern clubs will try to have their own standalone teams like they did in the NEAFL.

Southport I'm pretty confident will look to enter the new league. They have a number of former AFL players under their ranks, has been pretty successful in the NEAFL, and have plenty of cash. QAFL clubs dont really want Southport back in the league. They'll be too dominant

Aspley and Canberra may look to enter but not pretty confident. I think these clubs will try but will be hard with travel. Vic VFL clubs would probably only need to travel two-four times depending on how many 'northern' clubs there are.

An idea could be to follow St. George-Illawarra's lead and go with Brisbane-Fitzroy and Sydney-South Melbourne: the teams may be based in the other states, but since they'll be playing in Victoria just as often, nearly, incorporate those locations as their "home away from home" in their names.
