Do you like anyone? Reina's done an amazing job for years now, he's also a great guy if you've ever watched an interview. I'm guessing you haven't though because it seems like you don't know much.
Allen gave the ball away every time he touched it last night.
Yeah, he is a great guy, but he's an average goalkeeper.

We should get Galekovic. ;)

Seriously?! That is poor form. Send an e-mail to sherrin or the AFL and ask for sponsorship for about 30 footballs. Explain how the league in America is building and how it gives American's and Australian's living in America an opportunity to enjoy Aussie Rules Football.

I really hope that you get Leather Sherrin's to kick around at training and on game day.

Thanks for that, mate! I might try that. The only problem might be that the USAFL has a contract with Burley, so not sure how cooperative Sherrin might be.

In my honest opinion of footballs.

I loved playing with a burley more than a sherrin
Burley is what the USAFL uses. Any particular reason you like them better? (I personally have never seen a Sherrin except in photos. I have kicked a Burley, though.)

Was it funny to watch in class?? Teacher's Thoughts?
Well the funny thing was, and what made it even more awkward, was the fact that his (male) teacher was gay. He gave him an E but he edited out all the immature shit and he received a B.

Back on football, my dream Liverpool squad (using current players of course) would be:

-------------Reina-------------
Kelly, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson
-------------Lucas-------------
-Shelvey, Gerrard, Sterling-
------Suarez, Sturridge------

Subs: Henderson, Downing, Enrique, Allen, Coates, Assaidi/Suso, Jones (GK)

Yeah, he is a great guy, but he's an average goalkeeper.
He's one of the best keepers in the league! He's won us multiple games with his own gloves.

No love for Borini?

So has Galekovic ;)

Let me pick everyone's brains a bit.

I would love to play (if not this season, perhaps in 2014) for the Columbus Jackaroos. I don't expect to be a major impact player or anything outstanding. It's just for the fun and competition. I'm 52 years old in a couple of weeks (seriously). I'm also, unfortunately, not in great shape. I was in a car accident a few years back, and I have back and knee issues that date back prior to that accident. Trying to rehab, but it's not nearly as easy (with old age coming on) as it was as a youngster. The body just doesn't heal/respond like it once did. That, in itself, may even delay my hopes to play until 2014. I train a bit (nothing serious, plus it's winter here), plus if you go back a few posts you'll see I have to buy another footy, also. o_O

I used to play just about every American sport as a youth. Not a superstar, but pretty decent soccer player, at least. (Ironically, not an American sport.) I could "bend it like Beckham" before there was a star named Beckham, and pretty much could hit any target, but distance was limited. (I'm not a large individual by any means. Actually pretty small to be playing most sports.) I also used to punt/kick an American football, with accuracy, but not an impressive distance.

Anyway, here's what I want to know.

I practiced bouncing more than kicking before my ball's bladder blew through the leather. I can run and bounce fairly well. Not well enough to be comfortable with it, as it still takes a huge amount of concentration to try and get it back into my hands. But in the space of 9 months (or however long it was that I had that footy to train with), I at least can do it more than half the time without much trouble. Which, sadly, is more than most USAFL players can say.

Question 1: How hard is it, how long did it take you, etc., to bounce a footy properly? Are there any tips aside from just practicing the bounce over and over?

Also, since I'm not close to 100% physically, I haven't really pressed myself to put everything I have into a kick just yet. I'm learning the limits of my back better, and I'm pretty sure I can kick and simply not worry about it much. (My physician said it was okay for me to start lifting weights again, if that puts things into perspective a bit.) So, the way I have been going about it (learning to kick a footy, which isn't the same as the way we punt an American football), without really giving it my all, I can kick pretty accurately about 25-30 meters, whether that's running (more of a jog still for me) or kicking from a spot with just a step or two, no matter how much height I get on it. Since I haven't tried to push myself harder, that's about my limit for now. I can also snap nearly the same distance, kicking across my body.

Question 2: How far can you kick, and what videos have the best techniques for learning that you are aware of, and are there any tips to getting more distance without sacrificing accuracy?

Any info/feedback is appreciated. Cheers.

Oh wow, I hugely mis interpreted you there. I thought that was your leagues ball.

Sorry :(

Hope everything goes the way it should for you to get back to playing Aussie Rules.

I would suggest going for a walk about 3 times a week, and bouncing the ball regularly. If your'e feeling up to it, try it on the run. I do this for preseason. I run down to Trevor Barker Oval (local VFL ground) have shots at goal for about 2 hours, run home.

At a local park, try and kick the ball between 2 objects. e.g. a bin and a tree. See how many times you can get it through the middle.

Technique-wise. Look at how Gary Ablett Snr (Number 5 Geelong) kicks the ball. Head over the ball, nice even shoulders, about a 10 step run up and then kicks through the ball.

Here's a kick of mine, a torpedo punt. This isn't a good example to follow as I don't run in straight to the goals, instead I run around. This went about 43 meters, i'm pretty happy with this as i was using a full size leather sherrin.

Hope everything goes the way it should for you to get back to playing Aussie Rules. :)

Good luck!:thumbsu:

Burleys are a bit heavier. A little bit longer i think.
I umpired last year in the SMJFL and they changed from Sherrin to Burley. The match balls that the league ordered were terrible. The league ordered the cheapest leather match balls possible. They were ALL botched. Some were very heavy and hard, others were shaped terribly. I umpired this one game and the ball I was given was the worst footy I had ever seen. It was bigger and heavier to the left of the laces compared to the right. Someone kicked the ball up really high during play, with the slightest breeze the ball was doing a typical drop punt, spinning backwards, then it slowed down and the heavier end of the ball was facing towards the ground in mid-air and stayed that way for the remaining 3 or 4 seconds of it's flight.

The WAFL match balls are the best football IMO. It's just such a shame the league thought they were being smart, by saving money on footballs.
