"The AFL equivalent to NFL Superbowl MVP."

The less Americans that know of Aussie Rules the better.

'He's a big deal!'

I do love that one of the rare times we get on the tele across the globe, the person in question's name is "Brian".
Too bad it's not always "Bruce".

We're going to do it here on large scale too, one way or another. Before AFL expands to Los Angeles. ;)

Wow. You're opinion, just wow.
Hmmm. Good or bad?

I just meant that the penalty should be harsher. If that had been the case, I doubt this would have been a black eye on footy here. There's been some pretty ugly scenes in sports here, and penalties for that kind of stuff have gotten harsher and harsher over the years. I don't know what the attitude there is, but the general consensus here is that there was absolutely 0% courage or class in Lake's action.

Also, I would much rather see AFL promote itself in the States, rather than wait until something like this happens and then have our "holier-than-thou" media jump on it like that. I hated seeing this story on CNN. Would rather see coverage of the GF, you know?

I have a very close mate who barracks for norf and I don't want to have shitfight on this board, that's for the Bay, the only thing I've said on the matter is that it was wrong of the AFL to have Petrie's hearing before hand and the fact that Petrie scratched Lake's face before the "strangle". Lake deserves his punishment but Petrie is getting off scott free and that's what shits me the most.

I'm far enough removed geographically to say I've only ever seen the incident as shown there.
If a player does what Lake did, unprovoked, then he deserves the book thrown at him.
If, as has been suggested, someone did anything close to scratching the face, especially near his eyes, then he deserves everything he gets.
I got poked in the eye once in a Amateurs game, it took weeks to come good, and cost me plenty in missed work and specialists appointments.
Next time I thought someone was trying that on, I got suspended for 4 weeks and he got a broken cheekbone.
Had I been able to do what Lake did, I would have.

No, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start a one side v. the other side fight. What I mean is the perception of the AFL going with (what is, IMHO) minimal punishment can be a p.r. nightmare, and unfortunately, it's turned out to be that here. My personal opinion is that there's nothing on ground that permits someone choking another player. My personal feelings, right or wrong (and there are reasons why I think this way), are that he got off easy. It wouldn't matter if he was a Pie. That, to me, is like retaliating by putting a skater's head into the boards in hockey, and it's just wrong. It's not allowed at any time, for any reason, and there's a purpose behind that (and not just because it makes the game look bad to outsiders). There are some things that just can't be done during a game, and choking is always going to be one (with the exception of MMA/UCF). They beat the crap out of one another in hockey, but you still can't choke another player, no matter what he did to you earlier.

People who couldn't care about soccer in the least knew about the WC ear biting incident. That's not what any soccer fan wants reported from the World Cup. We want to see scores, great goals, great saves. Not biting, not choking, not red cards for breaking an opponent's leg in retaliation for an earlier foul that wasn't recognized. We want to see the sport. Not the "OMG WTF is wrong with those people?" type of news. And the Lake/Petrie incident is the same sort of thing to Americans. If they didn't know about footy from AFL marketing, now what they do know about AFL is the Lake/Petrie incident. Not the great things we love about footy, but a choking incident.

Sadly, if it was a retaliation, Lake has to learn to put game first, bring the original offense to the officials' attentions, and play like everyone else does and seek retribution through correct means. We have to do that in society, so why not in sport? We've all been wronged in sports, but I don't know of anyone who has retaliated this way, and usually, that's what catches the eyes of the officials (umps, in footy, of course), is the retaliation. Which is why the personal discipline (of Lake, in this instance) is necessary. Can't lose you head out there. How many times have we been coached that, in every sport?

Just for the sake of saying AFL was light (and to Americans, it was, whether he was attacking just because he was a dick or he felt somehow justified to begin, and then not stop, choking Petrie), the problem is that, as I said sarcastically, initially, "All news is good news, right?", because it's not. I would (as would all footy fans here) like to see AFL promote itself here, rather than let the American media do so, because of what they will choose to air about the sport. Whether or not Lake was incensed and retaliated doesn't make it any less of a black eye on AFL here.

Another example of AFL's lack of marketing: I have two teammates who will be traveling to Aus in August to play in IC14 with our National squad. We can't watch any of their matches. None. How does that promote footy internationally? And if that's not what IC is for, then what, exactly?

That's what I was really complaining about. It doesn't matter that it was Lake choking Petrie, or had it been Cloke kicking Gaz in the kahunas, or had it been Buddy holding down Cyril Rioli and farting in his face. If AFL doesn't promote the sport internationally, then guess what kinds of stories are going to be picked up by our media?

Americans heard about Meat Loaf at the GF. But not the final score, or who played, or any highlights from the GF. That is the problem I'm complaining about.

hahahahaha your pain must be so bad

Was reading an article about the player names on the jumpers, how does it work if they have stuff like this. "In 2014 there are five pairs of players with identical names – Mitch Brown (Geelong and West Coast), Josh Kennedy (Sydney Swans and West Coast), Tom Lynch (Adelaide and Gold Coast), Sam Reid (Greater Western Sydney and Sydney Swans) and Scott Thompson (Adelaide and North Melbourne)." By the way, the article is at http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-04-14/names-may-get-nod

M.(Middle Name First Letter).Brown

If they play for different teams, I don't see the problem
But in a match like Gold Coast vs Adelaide and both Tom Lynch's are playing it would make sense to use middle names

Why would they need to change anything? You're not going to confuse Josh Kennedy the Swans player and Josh Kennedy the Eagles player, they wear different uniforms...
I actually think they switch teams when they play each other, I'm not sure. Including their middle initial should clear things up.

Freo have officially gone mental on AFL Auctions.

Looks like things the players are trying to sell...

Show and tell with Michael Barlow and Garrick Ibbotson? lol.
