Footy is more physically demanding overall, but I agree with you, I would never want to play our version of football without a helmet unless it's flag football (non-contact). Violent collisions are violent. And frequent. Gridiron wears your body down in a different way than footy does.

There's some truth to that. Someone recently did a study on helmets, and came to the conclusion that leather helmets offered as much protection as today's high-tech helmets. The problem is that (esp. on a high school level) kids think that it affords them so much protection that they can lead with their heads when they tackle, resulting in a lot of concussions and head/spinal injuries. I even see a lot of that in NFL, which wasn't the case when I was a young lad. Some of that may be poor coaching (esp. on youth level), but there have been some recent studies that revealed a tendency to think it's okay to tackle that way now because the helmets are advertised as safer with each new advancement in helmets.

But, with helmets, the artistic design possibilities are much greater. That's why I said helmets are my favorite part of any code's uniform, because of the door they open for creativity in sports design. ;)
 
I heard somewhere that the reason they introduced helmets into American Football was because in the very early days some people died due to Football related injuries.

Yes, in fact, it was President Teddy Roosevelt, a big football fan, who stepped in to keep the sport from becoming illegal here because of that. Helmets became mandatory by the late 30s in college and early 40s in NFL, during his cousin's (Franklin Roosevelt) presidency.

Football's first golden age was characterized by incredible violence and life-threatening danger, and the new sport's popularity grew even as the casualties rose. After dozens of players were killed in brutal incidents that rattled the national consciousness, a proto-progressive movement attempted to abolish the game.
At that critical moment, President Roosevelt, an outspoken advocate of "the strenuous life" and a longtime fan of the game, fought to preserve football's rugged essence. In 1905, Roosevelt summoned key football coaches to the White House for a historic meeting. The result was the establishment of the NCAA and a series of rule changes, including the advent of the forward pass, which not only saved the sport but transformed football into what it is today: the quintessential American game.
