AFL-related videos have got worse over time since at least the early 1990s. It's hard to imagine that is possible, considering video editing software is so universal. YouTubers do a better job than some of the editors on footy DVDs these days.Just having another watch of the "Noughties" DVD released at the end of 2009 by Channel 7, it truly is the worst compilation video I have ever seen - in stark contrast to "The 90's - The Decade That Delivered" which was 3 hours of awesome highlight reels.
I know SJ and other posters who appreciate the game very closely would agree.
The Noughties DVD was full of bad interviews from Channel 7 employees talking up their own sides. Then when I finally thought they were going to have a decent look at the best marks and goals, they show about 50 1-second snippets and about four in total in their entirety.
Sandy Roberts - "Now let's find out what was the best goal and mark of the decade"
Channel 7 team - Name individual players instead of marks. Ludicrous.
The best thing about that entire DVD was seeing Dennis Commetti name Nathan Bassett as his player of the decade; still gives me a chuckle.
A good example is various Geelong season highlight VHS/DVD videos I have. I have 1992, 1994, 1995, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011. I kid you not, the 1992-1995 ones are the best, followed by 2004. By 2011 all they have done is got the overseas highlight package clips (similar to the old BigPond AFL YouTube highlight videos until 2012) and put them together for the season. The narration over the top is in present tense (e.g. 'Into the side this week comes Mooney for Hawkins')! Half the highlights on the 2011 disc are of the opposition. Just disgraceful.
