Roos dogged Fitzroy because he was sick of losing. And it was the loss of Roos and one or two others that saw essentially all their decent, charismatic blokes taking off. I don't think Paul Roos should be applauded at all, because I do think he helped kill off the Fitzroy Lions.

Mmm I'm not an expert on Fitzroy, particularly their final years, but I think he was a victim of their demise rather than a perpetrator. Regardless of that though, he was a brilliant player for them and he's done a wonderful job in recent times promoting the history of the Fitzroy Football Club.

It's a bit like Leigh 'the Rat' Colbert. Notice that he never rides the boundary down in Geelong? Because he skipped out, as captain, on a lowly club to go to a successful one. Roos should feel guilty about departing a sinking ship when he was the head, guts, and face of their team. I wouldn't go showing my face around too many Lions outings.

Not an act of much charisma or character at all. Shit thing to do when we're talking about a 100 year old footy club already being kicked pillar to post.

Roos was out of contract and received higher monetary offers from both Adelaide and Sydney. He had nearly been traded by Fitzroy to Collingwood at the end of 1990 and the Club refused to extend Roos' contract at the end of 1994 to cover the 1995 season. So at the end of 1994, Roos told Fitzroy that he would consider any new contract that would reflect his playing record (269 games) and be fully guaranteed. (i.e one total figure for each of the contract and not a base payment plus match payments and incentives). Fitzroy refused to do this, mainly because they couldn't afford to.

Alistair Lynch to the Bears was the point at which the on-field decline became irreversible.

I think you're looking in the wrong direction. Ross Oakley, Graeme Samuel, Wayne Jackson, John Kennedy snr, Terry O'Connor, Ron Evans, Colin Carter are far more to blame than Paul Roos.

Roos received a terrific welcome from the Fitzroy faithful at the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame dinner held in Melbourne last year. I was there and saw it first hand.
